View Full Version : Something dark and psychological....

I'm not a huge fan of anime, but now and again when I have shit to do, I like to stay up all night and watch a series all in one go.

I've so far gone through Shuffle, Deathnote, Ergo Proxy and last night Elfin Lied, and even though I found them all really amazing, I want something more pscyhological than deathnote; complex and mature like Ergo Proxy and darker and more twisted than Elfin Lied.

Is there much stuff out there like this which exists?

This may be a far reach, but... Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion has its dark moments and complete plot twists. The thing is, you have to give it time as the series grows REALLY interesting towards the end of season one.

It's most definitely psychological. I know you'll be able to appreciate that part of the show.

Season two is 8 episodes in, join the fun.

My Summary of it:
"Lelouch De Britannia is a fallen prince of Britannia living out his days as a Britannian in Area 11 once known as Japan until conquered by the Britannian Empire. Lelouch despises the empire and is one day given the ability to make his word absolute to anyone he says it to. If they are told to die they die, if they are told to live they live. He soon uses his power to amass followers behind the anonymous persona 'Zero'. It is then the Black Knights are born and lead to take back over Japan for the rightful natives."

The art is beautiful and the production value is top notch. The story keeps you on edge, except for that episode they made the giant pizza... that was kind of gay.

The premise that Lelouch is able to command people is similar into how Light was able to control people in Death Note.

Very worth the watch.

If you like reading manga, I'd suggest Berserk. That's completely dark and twisted to the highest degree. Seriously, that's as fucked up as they come. It's a complete horror-fantasy. I've never seen the anime, but I know it only covers a small portion of the over-all story.

Gantz is pretty good too. A Sci-Fi horror on par with Berserk in twistedness. Again, I read the manga only for this, wasn't a fan of the anime.

Watch it when you're done with Code Geass I guess.

I didn't like Monster. I guess I haven't watched it all the way through, but about 1/3 through. I found it kind of boring and it dragged on a lot... but it's decent if you're into that stuff.

Ultimate Survivor Kaiji and Akagi are probably closest.

Akagi is 26 episodes long. In other words not short at all.

It's pretty good though. I just started watching and I got to episode 5 last night. Just brace yourself for the art style. Jesus...

26 eps is standard length for 1 season.

Fukumoto has a pretty unorthodox character art style, but his writing is top notch. You get used to the odd designs after awhile.

The Akagi anime ends inconclusively since the manga is still ongoing, just so you know.

Here's a couple resources to better grasp reach mahjong:

Basic tutorial:

Japanese scoring/hand terminology:

After you're done with Akagi, check out "Ultimate Survivor Kaiji" from Fukumoto's original manga "Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji", winner if the 1998 Kodansha manga award. It's good too.

yea i did feel the drag at times, but did anyone else notice that from the first to second season it went from believable things to unbelievable? i mean mafia hidouts and is it just me or does after killing someone who called you his first real friend, giving away a deathnote to save his sister(who he already debated on killing) seem stupid?

Dark_Magneto

I really think that the author intended to end the series after Light got the notebook back, but got pressured to make it run longer and started to run out of ideas. Also it was being published in Shonen Jump and the bad guy winning isn't a good message to send to the kiddies, which is why we can't have nice things.

Yes.

Yes it does.

I also second Rabb's suggestion of Serial Experiments Lain. That show is great.

kakurenbo. it's a short movie about a bunch of kids playing a dangerous game of hide and seek.

i've seen a lot of series that can pull off dark and psychological pretty well, but i'm always on the lookout for anime with more suspense and horror. i want rly dark stuff, i want my pulse to rise about 300 beats per minute, i want an anime to make me go "zomgholyfuckingshit!! D:" and then not sleep for a week.

i always wind up a bit disappointed by the entire "horror/suspense" anime genre though. don't get me wrong...i've found most of it to be very very good stuff, i just didn't feel the horror or the suspense.

i think that perfect blue was probably the closest to what i'm always looking for. in fact...yeah, that one was awesome. paranoia agent also deserves honorable mention.

anybody out there know of more stuff like that?

If I think about it... I know I know of something somewhere...

Ok, for manga... the Berserk and Gantz manga are pretty intense at times. More so Berserk than anything. There's some genuinely creepy/terrifying parts in that series.

NOT THE ANIME!!!

The manga.

I know I was thinking about something the other day too and recalled something...

Grrrr. This is going to effectively agitate me.

BINGO: Boogiepop Phantom

That's pretty crazy if I recall.

I've heard that Code Geass is really psychological. I haven't seen it, it's next on my list, but I've heard it's better than Death Note in that aspect.

i just started watching code geass myself.

pretty amazing stuff. it's probly the best series i've seen in quite some time.

i think i saw somebody here say that it's deathnote meets gundam and i'm inclined to agree, but it seems to be a lot deeper than just that. somehow, i'm reminded most of older stories like the count of monte cristo or the man in the iron mask.

Dark_Magneto

I raged at Code Geass.

Way too much plotdevice deus-ex-machina type stuff, and they can't even get the game that the series is themed upon right.

Since geass seems to bring him pain & misery, what you wanna bet he geasses his memories away by the end of the series?

He already used Geass on himself to beat the guy who could read minds or something like that.

Did he? I forgot about that part.

He does have the geass canceller with him though, so he can probably use his ability multiple times on a single person.
