View Full Version : What about a draft?
Ok so what if there is another draft? How could you get out of it? What about pretending to be drug addicted/handicapped/crazy? So the draft comes what are you gonna do? Im gonna be amish for a while.

For those of us enlisted, there's pretty much no option. I mean, we pretty much already agreed to go.
As for civilians, unless you're either confined to a wheel-chair, mildly retarded, bleeding to death on a gourney, dying, or dead, you're heading out.

In terms of the U.S., a draft just means you'll be enlisted straight into the Army. There's a good chance you'll go straight to where the fighting is going, but all it means is that they need more people.
A draft isn't going to happen unless something absolutely spectacular occurs. The U.S. strategy isn't "just throw men at it" anymore.
Your options:
- Deal with it
- Enlist in your branch of choice before you're actually drafted
- Move the hell out of the country to one that will harbor "draft dodgers" (I hate using that term because it sounds so negative)
- Pray like hell that you aren't actually drafted
The catch here: if you're an only child, you won't get drafted.
But like I said, it's not something you'll really have to worry about.

No matter what happens, you have a choice. Conscientious objector anybody? I don't know about you guys, but I'm not going to fight in a war I don't believe in.

Well if you want to be a slave, go ahead. Otherwise man up and fight for your rights.

You fight right on buddy, and well you're at it you can fight Big Anthony, Chico, Bubba, and all the rest of your future-cellmates. You can also try fighting that biting sense of embarrassment that will wash over you as your Drill Sargent laughs in your face when you tell them you're a conscientious objector.
Everybody else will be in Canada.

Yep sounds good, but other than that it would probably make the people of the country less tollerant to the bullshit we currently put up with from our government. Instead of just sitting back and accepting it with a :( on our faces.

Uh, you can get civilian service instead of going to jail, dumb ass. I would prefer jail though. Death before dishonor.

Best bet is to enlist in the service of your choice in a job you want. I figure if they need to increase the army's size that much you should be able to get the job you want.
Is it true that the Marines do shorter deployments than the other services in the USA? Details like that might be something to look into.

The USMC and Navy usually go on ~7 month deployments. Army, it's usually 11 months or more. For us AF folk, most of us are in the AOR for roughly 4 months at a time. Regardless of the branch of service, certain units and sections have special missions, that may require them to stay longer than whats normal.
Standard USMC tour is 7 months. It may be longer however, depending on the Corps' needs and the countries needs.
I am 100% against a draft, just for the main reason that if you force someone into a warzone that doesn't want to be there, they now become a liability to everyone around them. Do you want someone covering you in Iraq in the middle of an attack when they oppose the war, killing, etc, don't want to be there, and will refuse to fight/kill?
Fuck that, all there going to do is get theirselves killed along with everyone else in their platoon. Fuck the draft.

I am 100% against it because the United States is supposed to be a free country. Supposed to be, but not much anymore of course.
And that's damn right ziggy. Remember, the draft is unconstitutional.
As has been stated, there would have to be a major event to cause a draft. Something so radical would happen most people wouldn't avoid the draft, as they would get whipped up into another patriotic frenzy. You know, "nuclear weapon being detonated in a major city" big.
But a draft definitely does produce low-quality soldiers. Almost every nation that has mandatory military service(with the notable exceptions of Israel, Switzerland, and S. Korea) is known for poor training quality, immense amounts of brutal hazing, and lack of discipline. That's not what we need to fight the kind of wars that will be waged this century.
Hopefully, any new draft wouldn't involve blatant discrimination against the poor. College waivers and whatnot were fucking disgusting. I remember that's what Bobby Kenedy said, something along the lines of "doing away with college deferments would end the Vietnam War in 6 months".
Remember though, what many people seem to be forgetting, is that the military has a "long tail and a small mouth". That is to say, actual combat units consist of a small fraction of our total strength. The vast majority of soldiers are in support roles, and will not see combat. If you could, a 4 year stint in the Air Force or Navy sounds a hell of a lot better than giving up citizenship, but that's for individuals to decide for themselves.

If they drafted me for this war right now I'd just say "hell no" and shoot at anyone who wanted to haul me off to jail.
If something big happened, I'd probably join the Navy. Iraq: still mostly landlocked.

No you will not join the Navy. Navy is always sending people to Iraq and Afghanistan.
And what the hell you people fucking worried about the draft? Hell we need the draft right now. The draft will probably never happen again thank you Vietnam and CNN.
Army is already lowering and lowering its requirements everyday, taking criminals and what not.
Think about it for one minute before opening that reply button. Think about the consequences and the draft happening now. I'll tell you what, it ain't going to be pretty...
Actually, when your brought to the place to where they give you your "ceremony" and ask you to step forward if your military, just don't step forward, by stepping forward your consenting to joining the military.
If you don't step forward they'll ask you why in a very loud and demeaning way and you simply say your not in the military. You'll be sent to court and win the case.

A draft would really fix the problem of obesity. And Basic training isn't that bad for you either, with the whole getting fit and self discipline thing.
