View Full Version : Do Universities/Colleges Look At Grades From Freshman/Sophomore Year?

This is a major question that people ask all the time. My friend says that uni's and colleges weigh all years the same, but I heard they only look thoroughly at junior and senior years.

Thoughts?

I'm in Canada by the way. Should be the same for American schools, so I'd like feedback from people from both countries.

they'll look at all of your grades, but if your junior and senior ones are better than your freshman and sophomore, they'll see a pattern of maturity and think you didn't take shit seriously when you were a little malchick running around doing nightops and what not, but now you know how to buckle down and get shit done.

so in that sense, yes, junior and senior year grades have more weight.

if your grades went down as you went through high school, well...that's bad. BUT it can be offset if you took harder courses that just weren't available to you your freshman and sophomore years, hence your grades going down.

No they don't lol.

I had a 60 average in grade 9
65 in grade 10
70 in grade 11
89 in grade 12

If they looked at the first two years they would have been like this guys a retard.

I got in to
mac
uoft
waterloo
mcgill
queens
western

The only rejection i got was from uofo for their bilingual degree program (my french mark was terribad)

In Canada? Nope.
It's grade 11 and 12. You can fuck around all you want in grades 8 & 9...now, some programs MIGHT look at grade 10, but unless it's a very high demand programme and even then I've never heard of it. Generally below grade 11 it's "Does X have Course Y?" if anything, whereas Gr 11/12 it becomes "How did X do in Y?"

though remember that you are applying to colleges typically at the beginning of your senior year, so your grade 12 grades don't even exist yet. all they have to go on for you initial application are 9, 10, and 11. then maybe they'll want you final report card when you graduate to be sure you didn't just do shitty all year or they might reject you.

Ok, the first day of high school, I was told that universities only look at your Grade 12 marks.

I 50'd my way through the first three years. I learned what I needed, but only did the bare minimum of homework. In Grade 12, I graduated as a scholar and was admitted to every university to which I applied.

In Canada, only your Grade 12 marks count. They also look at some of your Grade 11 marks, but they won't disqualify you if your Grade 12 marks are mid-70 or above.

Beyond that, if you work for a full year before applying, you can be accepted as a mature student. Almost anybody can get into school via this loophole.

The US has a completely different system. Admissions within the US is a nightmare, by comparison.

Good luck.
