I am off to college! One question on my mind is, "What should I major in?"

A little about me:

I love music. I picked up the saxophone in the 7th grade and loved it. I became the best of my class and missed the all state band by 2 chairs. My jazz director told me that I play very well, and he told me that he has only said that to 5 people, including me and he has been teaching over 20 years. I have gone to jazz fests and beat the crap out of everyone else.

I love life. I like to figure out why we are here and what is our purpose. I sometimes just sit down at a table of friends and start talking about the relationship between dreams and reality and how in the hell the mind can do such fascinating feats. I meditate and spend time to think at least 1 hour a day to relax and reflect what happened that day. I sometimes think I am going to go what society calls "crazy" because I question almost every aspect of life.

I want to master my mind. Ever since I was a little kid, about 9 or 10, I have wanted to move stuff with my mind. I remember every school year, during class when all work was done and everyone would be having a conversation, I would usually try to "move" the pencil on my desk. So far nothing, but in the near future I expect great things to happen...

My life in 3 paragraphs.

i'll tell/ask you the same things i said in the other thread: what majors does your school even offer, and what of those interest you and why? pretty much every school has psychology and philosophy and major ones have music programs...but maybe you can narrow it down to something more specific.

Major in music education. There are always a shortage of band teachers, and frankly, those other two majors don't sound too marketable. Or, at least majoring in jazz, and if you are good, can teach you enough to join a professional or traveling band.

If those are your academic interests, I'd take music. Like Byss said; we need band teachers, and you can introduce your students to something that you love.

Philosophy has unfortunately become an utterly useless major unless you want to go all the way to a PhD and become an academic. The pay, I've heard, is still shit.

Psychology is the new English. Honestly, there are hordes of these stupid, vapid University kids majoring in Psychology. Grad school is competitive and tough to get into. Plus your degree is a dime a dozen.

...Granted, most degrees are nowadays.

If you expect to find the answers regarding your questions about life and its meaning, you might not want to be a philosophy major. If you like to think about that stuff and question the given explanations, then you should do it.

I guess it depends on what school you go to, but I found the philosophy department at my school to be pretty laid back.
