I feel that this forum is in desperate need of a pick me up, and so I invite all to share their favorite military jokes. Keep in mind, it's all in good fun, so don't get offended if your branch gets a good ribbing.

As custom dictates, I'll start things off.

An airman and a sailor are in a bar, and realize they need to use the head. After they finish their business, the airman proceeds to the sink to wash his hands, while the sailor goes to walk out the door and continue that age old Naval tradition of getting piss tank drunk. Noticing that the sailor is going to leave the head without washing his hands, the airman says, "You know, in the Air force, they teach us to wash up after we use the head."
Without missing a beat the sailor turns and says, "Well, in the Navy, they teach us not to piss on our hands."

The heads of the four branches were sitting around arguing over who had the bravest troops. So the General of the Army calls over a Private, hands him a grenade, and says, "Son, run over that hill, pull the pin, and hold this" to which the private responds, "SIR YES SIR" and then carries out his orders, spreading him over quite a bit of land.

The General of the Air Force says, "That's nothing" and calls over to a pilot and orders him to take the nearest plane up in the air, and slam it into the side of a mountain, which the pilot does dutifully.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps., not to be outdone, calls to one of his men, orders him to stand ten yards away and catch a bullet from the commandants sidearm, which the private does.

The Fleet Admiral of the Navy exclaims, "That's nothing, watch this!" He walks onto the pier, looks up the mast, and says, "Hey, Petty Officer, I want you to swan dive down to the deck, then hop over the side and start cleaning the side of the ship." The petty officer looks down from his post, and responds with a resounding "Fuck you, Sir!" The Fleet Admiral looks to his counterparts with a smile and says, "See, I told you my boys were brave."

A TV producer is preparing a new reality show for his network. He calls up a sailor to audition to be on the show. The sailor arrives and the producer hands him a pistol, and tells him to walk into a nearby room and shoot anyone he sees.

The sailor takes the gun and walks into the room, but then returns and says "I'm sorry sir, but I just can't bring myself to shoot that person".

The next day the producer calls up an airman, and instructs him to do the same thing. This time the airman doesn't even bother to go into the room. He just hands back the gun and says "Sir, that's something I just can't do."

The following day, the producer brings in a soldier. The soldier walks into the room and closes the door, and a loud bang is heard as he fires the pistol. The soldier then comes back out of the room and tells the producer "Somebody loaded blanks in this pistol sir." The producer then laughs and says "That's ok, it was just a test to see if you were willing to do it."

Finally, a Marine is brought in and given the same instructions. The Marine enters the room with the pistol, and one gunshot is heard... and then another. Then the producer hears something like wood breaking, followed by screams coming from inside the room. The Marine then comes out of the room and says "Some idiot loaded blanks in this pistol, so I had to break off a table leg and beat the person to death sir."

I know several Coldstream guardsmen, my father is a WWII veteran and my family has strong military ties.

I don't really care what your perspective is; like I said before, I have a pretty different view of the military in general and the marines specifically now that I'm in the middle of it, but jesus, do you know exactly what you're doing when you're posting links to IED ambush videos? If you were posting links to pages detailing the Abu Ghraib scandal, or Haditha or something like that, then it would be different.

1) American pilots killing British troops.

2) Americans killing Iraq civilians in front of their kids.

3) American (and possibly British) troops being killed in IED ambushes.

4) American 'professionals' acting like petty criminal delinquents.

However the only video you've complained about is the IED one, thus indicating you aren't at all concerned about some veteran* seeing soldiers killing civillians or their allies. But Oh! Consider this: Most of the people in this forum, let alone in the US Military joined post 9/11. Some of us joined in the middle of the Gulf War II, knowing that many people viewed it as an illegal/immoral war. Most of us have never been in a peace time military. (Which is REALLY going to make life interesting when everything is said and done, and we're all home again)

We ain't pissed that you posted videos of American soldiers being killed in Iraq. Its not our feelings being hurt either, people die in war. We're pissed because those who died are part of our military family. They're our fallen brothers. No dude, every other video can be taken as a basis for your argument. Posting IED ambushes is not only in really poor taste, but degrades the validity of your argument. I emphasize this because in doing so, when you try to talk to an average American about these issues, he's not going to see past the fact that you don't think of the military as good Americans making personal sacrifices in service of their country. Your argument will be unheard, and your videos irrelevant.

Now I think that failures and unnecessary casualties pertaining to the Iraq war can 99% of the time be attributed to poor strategic leadership. It is rarely the fault of the grunt. Of course, I'm counting the "wrong tool for the job" concept as part of strategic failure since expecting Marine expeditionary units to do humanitarian missions or policing actions is absurd. Marines are still trained with the amphibious landing doctrine in mind and are better used for pulling the trigger and not shaking hands.

I'd like to to further back this up with my opinion that the Marine Corps indoctrinates it's recruits more to follow orders without question than to commit to mission accomplishment. You remember the quote from Full Metal Jacket? "The Marines don't want robots, the Marines want killers". Yeah, pretty much flip it the other way and you've got the idea.

Actually you've rather hit the nail on the head. That is exactly what the supporters of this forum wanted to achieve, a cosy clubhouse and recruiting ground.

Some of the finest minds and posters on totse are here daily to make sure the OOrahs don't get away with their nonsense about 'brave' troops. Hey man, I'm trying to be objective. I'm only saying that there's some things that cannot be said if you're trying to put forward a rational argument. Kind of like making the argument that bomb making instructions shouldn't be censored because then terrorists couldn't make bombs, rather than it being a free speech issue.

The Marine Corps is expanding it's active duty force, dealing with huge amounts of turnover due to the GWOT, and lowering it's recruitment standards.

Partly why I am joining(and the only reason I considered the Army) was the new environment would be a great way to get noticed if you are intelligent and capable.

I think Slave is just another part of the necessary "other side" to any war.

Theres alot of bad things that happen during a war, and we cant ever forget about that, or let it be unrecognized or smoothed over.

I disagree with Slave's personal convictions, but hes not the minority as far as opinion goes.

I think the funniest shit that can happen in the military is when you expose the blatant ignorance of a superior.

Take for example the time we were splashing in AAVs off of our Whidbey Island class LSD. Our NCOIC insisted there wasn't room for our MREs inside the track, and they must be put on the roof. However, we didn't have anything to lash them down with, bungee cords, bailing twine, nothing. So we just let them sit in the open topped cargo racks. Let it be known that it was against all of our declaration of the common knowledge that a box full of MREs would float.

So we splashed. Tracks drove off the ship, went down into the water, boyancy did it's thing, and our MREs became jetsam.

We had no chow for a 4 day field op, but it was funny. Sgt looked like a total ass.
