View Full Version : Why is an apple supposed to be the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of stuff?

I'd have put "The tree of the knowledge of good and evil" in there but it wouldn't fit...

I'd seriously like to know, why is it supposed to be an apple?

I ate an apple the other day and I learned a lot less about good and evil than that time I ate all those babies and then donated their parents wallet money to charity. What a weekend...

Seriously though, why an apple?

The question is...if it wasn't an apple, WHY wasn't it an apple?

I don't think there is any reason, probably because the bible writing people thought that was the best fruit to use?

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that the forbidden fruit was apples, and no one is really sure why apples became identified as the forbidden fruit. However, in Greek Mythology, there is a story about a tree of golden apples being created by Mother Earth as a wedding gift for Zeus. Naturally, the tree is guarded by a serpent and its fruits are embroiled in all sorts of erotic adventures. Now, this may have something to do with why apples are identified as the fruit, because Renaissance painters blended together Greek Mythology and Biblical tales, and they'd obviously take advantage of such a curious parallel as that between serpents and trees of carnal fruits.

Judaism says the fruit may have been either grape, fig, wheat, or citron. Many scholars also think the fruit was pomegranate, and that it wasn't necessarily that type of fruit that God banned but, a specific tree.

I assume you are talking about the original sin in Genesis? I have a book that explains the Bible. The book is "Don't Know much about the Bible" by Kenneth C. Davis, and I believe it said the fruit was identified as a fig, since the apple is more of a "new age" vegetation.

Whatever fruit it was, a good question is.......was it just the ONE tree that grew magical fruit, or is all fruit in that family magical?

I thought of this b/c I too eat an apple/grapes/pinapple/tomato, etc. and gain no further magical understanding of good and evil.

Another good question would be......where is that magical tree today? If it is still in the garden.....where is the garden?

If the garden is not on Earth.......THEN WHY DID HE MAKE THE EARTH IN THE BEGINNING?

It's probably a result of syncretism between Christianity and pre-Christian European religion. Someone already mentioned the instance of apples in Greek mythology, and there is also the Norse tale of Idunn's apples which gave the gods immortality.

'cause he knew from the word go that eve was a fuckup, and that she'd fuck up the world. Makes sense to me, seems to jive with what I know about women today.

'cause he knew from the word go that eve was a fuckup, and that she'd fuck up the world.

He fucked up when he created her, then - didn't He? If He knew all that, why didn't he just take her out of the picture? He's God. He could have saved the world a load of hurt, if it follows that Eve was the instigator of all sin for mankind.

Pssh.

True...

Considering the blatent sexism that has accompanied Abrahamic religions, and is still very prevelant to this day, it seems more feasible that the men who created the bible and the fanciful little stories found therin, did it for one reason:

Pussy Control.

Reproduction is the most basic instinct of every single living organism on this planet. It is the one thing humans share with every other living thing here. It is an all reaching, all consuming desire.

For thousands of years and practically up until the sexual revolution of the 60's, pussy, or more importantly your access to it, was controlled by an Abrahamic religion. If you wanted a piece in nearly any civilized area (with the exception of Asia, who have their own methods of pussy control) for the past thousand years, you needed permission from God.

The only way you get that permission is from a man on a pulpit. To get that, you need to pay. Whether through the charitable donation to the church for the service itself, or through years of tithing.

Equating the pope to a pimp, for example, would be a better analogy that equating him to a saint. You could get some from a prostitute, provided she wasn't burned at the stake for enticing and bewitching, good, honest god-fearing men with her magic, but you would become a pariah of any upstanding community.

Advertisers, corporations, business small and large all know what the church has known since it's inception:

The fastest way to man's heart may be his stomach, but the fastest way to a man's wallet is through his prick.

Come to think of it, I suppose it was good that God punished eve with evil moon blood (menstration). For without that, we as a species, could not reproduce.

Yet more evidence God set humanity up for failure. Not to mention punishing children for the inequaties of the parents.

Basically.....

If God is real.........what an asshole.

:D I can picture it like it was yesterday: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John sitting around a campfire frantically scribbling down their versions of the Gospel with one thought on their minds "Imma get some major pussy after this."

Basically.....

If God is real.........what an asshole.

Correction, the Abrahamic God can be quite an asshole.

Because it's a damn fairy tale.

Don't focus on these aspects of religion-truly, they are inapplicable and largely irrelevant.

Trying to study a fairy tale as if it is fact is difficult.. and can only be done imperfectly.

What you should be focusing on, if you are religious, is helping and accepting others. That's what's important. That's the message. If there is a god, he does not give a fuck if you know and understand a fairy tale. He would want you to be good to others on Earth. Right? Now take away god from the equation. Still, the message is to be good to others. It stays the same. You think any reasonable god would say: "you believed the wrong fairy tale, BURN IN HELL FOR EVER.." No. He would judge based on your merit as a person. And that is all that matters.
