View Full Version : Dorm, Apartment, or moving in, which is win?

I'll lay down the basics:
Dorm= $6,651 (Yes, 1 year room and meal ticket with everything else included)

Moving in with uncle 30 miles from university= free room and board. (not counting gas and misc. expenses.)

Apartment= $400 to $600 not counting roommate. (not counting furnishings and foodstuffs)

This older guy that lives in my neighboorhood (I think he is a pimp) said to get an apartment without a roommate, then fill it with a roommate, and If I don't like that person, kick them out and find another one. He said "you gotta Hustle."

Lastly, -I'm savy on the idea of driving 30 miles a day -more then playing the rat race for a damn apartment.

So far I plan to move in with my relative.

The apartment would give you the most freedom and would be the most convenient. Living 30 miles away from school would fucking suck, and you'll end up missing class all the time. I only live 10 miles from school and it's too far.

Go with the Dorm, dude. Rez life is the best time of your life.

your money figures are a little confusing.

the dorm is $6,651 for the year? and an apartment would be $400-600 a month? don't forget utilities. and you need furniture if it's not furnished. if it is, then it probably costs more.

and how many months are we talking here?

He's probably factoring in meal plans, insurance, and other costs associated with living on campus into the amount for the dorm.

Around here, it's about $3-4,000 a semester to live on campus, but you can get an apartment within 1/2 a mile of the school for between $350-400 a month, so I don't think his numbers are too off.

Go with an apartment. It may cost a little more with utilities, but the privacy and freedom is worth it in my opinion. Get a camping cot and an air mattress if you want cheap and easy furnishings. The only problem is most apartments want you to sign a 12 month lease, so try to negotiate for 2 semesters if you don't want the full 12 months.

You don't want to travel 30 miles every day. That's fucking impossible.

You are right in the difficulty of traveling everyday, but its just a good chance for me to budget. I can make the 30 mile trip in 20-30 minutes at the direction it is -theres little traffic from A to B and I'm adept at evading jellies.

Your enthusiasm for that trip there and back every day will last two months maximum. I spent last year bouncing between my residence hall and a place 7 miles from the campus, and the latter was a nightmare for me logistically.

Don't do it.

Dorm. Wait to get an apartment til you know people around there. And the drive will SUCK. If you live on campus, you will be more likely to succeed in college, especially if you have tendencies towards skipping class.

It's easy to skip when you live 30 min away.

Dorm, even though I'm not living in them. Basically the college I'm going to has these apartments, they're 4 bedroom with a kitchen and small living room, and it costs 461 bucks a month. I'm living acrossed town, about a 10 minute drive with traffic, for only 250 a month. Look in the classifieds come late July or early August, I'm sure there's people in there looking to rent a room to a college kid for a decent price.

Depends on what your goal is.

If you want to make lots of friends and have a good time socially: live on campus.

If you want to save a lot of money and don't mind the drive: stay with uncle.

If you want to have a lot of freedom and already have friends around:, apartment.

All three have their upsides. Let me say that if you do have friends, I would recommend an apartment. The freedom factor combined with having a whole room to yourself and the ability to choose your meals etc is awesome.

Dorm or apartment that is walking distance to campus.

Apartment hands down if you can afford it. If you can't, live with your uncle.

Dorms are probably the worst thing in the world. They're infested with two things.

1) Bacteria. Seriously, college kids ain't clean. Have fun in communal bathrooms.

2) People. You will find friends if what you enjoy is drinking all the time with the same people.

You will meet enough friends in school that it will be better if you had your own place. You'll get a chance to get away from college life when you want, and it's a lot easier to bring a girl home to an apartment than to a college dorm.

And no RAs to tell you not to smoke, drink, this and that.

Apartment if you can afford it, and if you can't, go with your uncle.

Thought 30 miles is far. You will want to clump your classes into 3 days max, because it's not a 30 minute trip, it's an hour easily.

Yeah, I have my classes mixed in Monday through Thursday, 4 classes, nothing Friday through Sunday.

Live in the dorm to make friends your first year and get a feel for college life. Then get an apartment. You seriously do not want to live 30 miles from school. You'll burn shittons of gas - 60 miles a day is what, 2-3 gallons easily? With gas going up you'll be spending mimimum $8 every day you drive to class. You'll spend something like $100 a month just on gas.

Aside from gas, that's a lot of time to be wasting driving around. Plus, you'll definitely skip class a lot more than if you just walked 5 mins to class or whatever.

As a recent college graduate, I really recommend living on campus first, then getting an apartment. You'll be happier this way. Plus, how can you party if you have to drive 30 miles to get back home? You'll have to crash with other people, and you probably won't have that much freedom with your uncle anyway.

Best of luck.

Get your own apartment, that way you decide who can come in and who cant. There will be no food stealing or idiot roommates being drunk at 2am when you have an exam the next day.

Like other people said, you'll definitely make friends the quickest in a dorm, but if you know people allready an appartment would be fine too. I lived in a dorm last year and had a fucking great time.
Notice that almost every one told you NOT to live with the uncle though, thats just a bad idea.

No matter what if your going to be a freshman the best idea is to live on campus in a dorm for 1 or 2 years. It is the best way to meet new people, and you really immerse yourself into the whole college expirience.

after a year a 2 an apartment is bomb, and you can do waht you want party as much as you want and won't have to worry about RA's which is money.

In Summary, living on campus first will help you get more friends

If you're an incoming freshmen or transfer student dorming would seriously be your best bet. If not, an apartment would be your best bet. Driving/traveling however you like 30 miles 5 days a week for class would blow chunks.

Dorm if it's your first year. You'll meet a lot of people and have a lot of good times. Plus it's real handy being right there at your University at least it is for me being at UofT where there are a shit-load of resources available there.

Seriously, your school is full of asians. And not the hot asians like we have. It's all the ugly nerdy asians.

I actually saw my neighbour today, she's doing stats or something at UofT, not hot at all. Keep in mind I haven't been laid in a month or two, and I still don't find her hot.

"Worlds apart"? Have you ever noticed how they border each other, and most people describe the border as basically non-existent?

There's a reason why our name is the United States of/B] America, and it's because we are the United States [B]within America. America means America. I don't care if you give in to all the fucking dumbing down of our language by destroying, merging, and simplifying the meaning of our words, but don't assume it's universal.
