I really fucking hate this movement, The only reason we have people saying good things about the people over here in Iraq is because they don't want a second Vietnam.
My mother who I hate, and has never shown interest in anything I have ever done tells me she prays for me and stupid shit. She doesn't care
And then you have some bullshit celebrity's on AFN or what not saying they support the troops. It all fucking fake.
People I know are actually happier that I am getting out, more than the fact that I joined. They say good for you, and want to hang out.
I don't get it. Why is everything so fucking PC?
I support the troops because they're helping to finally solve the Muslim question. :)

Too late, we already got it. Its just now the hippies have gotten older and think it was really low to spit on the troops and shit, so they started the whole Support the Troops thing as they direct their protests at the federal government.
But we still have hippies spitting on the troops over the internet since they're too afraid to do it offline.

British politicians like to add a nauseating twist to this, whereby criticizing the war in Iraq is claimed as being equivalent to not supporting our troops.
In any case, apart from national self-defense, why should the public ever be morally expected to support the miltary?

This is far more often a case of "look at me, I'm being controversial and I'm going to pretend like it's perfectly normal" than anything else. It's the high school goth syndrome. However, I do agree that individuals should be treated accordingly, and a few bad apples do spoil the whole bunch.

If this happens here I think you should name those digusting hippies and expose them for the spineless and fearful cowards that they are...

Ok I don't spit on them but thats just cos its yuucky but if you want to get on a plane I'll happily make an exception.

The slogan "Support the troops" is a public relations concoction. It was devised to combat criticism of imperialist foreign policy. An attempt to shame members of the public critical of the war but its mostly aimed at those who are undecided of being against the war . Its meant to strike a pyschological note that if you are against the Iraq war etc then you also hate members of the armed forces. And you are therefore equated to the hippies and protesters of the 60's/70's who accosted American troops returning from Vietnam.
Its absurd but very clever. And its worked well to date unfortunately. However more and more people are seeing through this ridiculous drivel.

Because in the best case, they are public servants. I understand that sometimes things are different, but in concept...

I don't particularly like concepts that allow for reality to be brushed under the carpet.

A lot of people who don't support modern wars as they are do harbour a good bit of contempt for the soldiers. They might not say it, but they're thinking it.

I couldn't have put it better.
You sign up to die, get sent to a war zone to die... What do you want a medal? well fuck, you get one of those too...
I don't really care if a soldier is killed by an IED, that's what you sign up for. That's part of the job description. The only problem I have with the military is that for a lot of people, it's the only option for education and health care in the richest fucking country in the world . Why is it to get mediocre health care in the US you have to risk your fucking life.
All the troops are doing in Iraq is helping distribute 5.4 trillion dollars worth of oil contracts (At current world oil prices) to bush's pals and 50 billion dollars worth of military contracts to Cheney's pals. But they're just doing their job...

This is certainly true. It's funny when I meet new people for the first time that are very left-wing and anti-war and basically guide the conversation in a direction where they think I agree with them politically, and I can bring out their real views on servicemen and women because they feel they are "safe" around me. Sort of like you can do to gauge someone you meet as a racist. They are some of the most irrationally contemptuous people you can meet, and make no mistake, plenty of people are anti-war and hate the military because they have the ridiculous idea in their head that all violence is bad all the time, and there is no such thing as justified violence.

For choosing not to 'honour' men (actually mostly boys) who were too stupid to see past their own government's propaganda and enlisted? For dishonouring boys too cowardly to Conscientiously Object when the same government conscripted them? For refusing a minutes silence for men so evil they commited atrocities like running concentration camps in South Afrika, who fire bombed Dresden and oppressed, enslaved and murdered a whole population in Ireland?
B-b-b-ut they died for my freedom, right?
Nope, far as I know most of them died for getting in the way of a bullet.
There's nothing people who celebrate Edith Cavell as a hero need more than a few minutes of The Rifles Of The IRA at full volume.
...who were too stupid to see past their own government's propaganda and enlisted? For dishonouring boys too cowardly to Conscientiously Object when the same government conscripted them?

Funny, since didn't the Nazi minions at Dresden do the same things you accuse the British government of having done?

And I don't hold a minutes silence for them neither.
And I don't hold a minutes silence for them neither.
So then would you say there was thus nothing morally wrong with what happened to the Nazi serfs at Dresden? I know very little of Irish history unfortunately, and I will neither condemn nor support whatever the British government did or didn't do there, as I am not educated on the matter. However, it seems there was nothing necessarily wrong with Dresden when considered in the grander scheme of the Second World War.

I always support the soldiers. Not because I particularly like them, but because they're risking their lived because they have to, because they were told. Regardless of what they're fighting for, they need support. Fuck the war, fuck the government, fuck them for sending our soldiers to die in a sandpit to secure oil, but support the soldiers.
