Got these 2 little guys from a buddy for $20 :) they've been laying around for a while and time has come that i put them to use... but i got no ideas:( besides supersaturated BHO but would ice water cool the condenser enough to work with butane? (31F = butane condensation, and iced water is like what? 35F ?)
Help me put these to use! I haven't soxhleted anything yet :) i understand the principle and all, but one thing that i dont know is if I need those disposable-removable thimble-filters things? both extractors are slightly different if you look at the pics, but i dont think andy plant matter could get into the solvent flask, judging from the design of them.
Dude also gave me these too:

Personally I've never used a Soxhlet, however when I saw a demonstration of how to use one and the chemist was extracting from plant material the first thing I thought about was a salvorin A extraction.
I'm not sure if this is really a feasible use but... idk?

Freezing point of H2O = 0c
Freezing point of NaCl saturated H2O = <0c
;)
You don't have to use dH2O, do you?

Ahh, good call, i will surely try to load it up with some sage, and some 99% ethanol. Will post pics/results.

Duh! Im an idiot and sometimes i forget the basics :( You think that would be feasible for butane ?
So far my ideas revolve around BHO and salvia (thx J), I also got wormwood, kratom, and p.s. pods at my disposal, however i want to experiment with more selective solvents than ethanol. Any suggestions? I only have butane, 99% iso, 99% etoh, mek, and acetone, and am in the process of obtaining some heptane n hexane.
Also any clue what these tubes in last pic are for?
Thanks!

According to this (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071201113856AAIEGyX), the freezing point of nacl saturated water is around -21c. The bp of butane is -0.5c. I'm not sure how much lower the water temp would have to be than the bp of butane, but I think it might work.

Well, we will have to find out! But first i have to figure out why the fuck my extractor piece is a FEMALE on the bottom ???! WTF! now i need a F/F adapter or a M necked flask, and on top of that Im still waiting for the extraction thimble to arrive, which btw cost me more than all my soxhlets (5) combined.

 Maybe that's why it was so cheap.

them be capillary tubes, unsure why yours are bent like that, though it does remind me of the viscosity testing tubes we used to use when I worked in a petrochem lab...

I love Soxhlet but i only get to use it at work (even then rarely). I can't tell you much about BHO, but i can tell you that in a pipe tube (the usual method, tell me if you have not heard of this i can post a lot of info), gets some excellent results, no need to use the soxhelt, which i think will be a mess to clean later!:(

Hmm... makes sense

Nah, any strong alcohol cleans out bho residue no problem.
If YOU tried the tube method, i suggest you try the 1 way inhaler valve in vodka bottle cap method, where you rig it in the cap, put herb in the bottle, and spray butane into it, and slowly roll the bottle for 10-15 mins till you see the butane turn amber. Its not as pure as the tube method but its still WAY beter than any alcohol extracted hash ive tried. Plus if you use colibri butane like me then you better be rich to run 5-10 of these small $5 bottles every time for a decent yield in a bho tube process. Here are the pictures of the 1way valve set up www.yahooka.com/forum/farmers-lab/86522-honeybot.html
The reason i want to use soxhlet for that is to either preserve the damn expensive butane, or to supersaturate ethanol for hash or green dragon. :)

Ah see at what your getting at! Sorry wasn't too clear before. That link you posted has some nice pictures :) The butane is not a problem for me, i have a tank of it, i do not like using these small bottles, too expensive!
That 1 way valve is sweet, i should be trying that when i have some time, looks very promising!

looks fuckin delicious.
I tried it only once so far and i must say that the increase in yield is definitely worth the barely noticeable decrease in potency, as compared to the tube method.
But the tank ftw, i've only tested one and it left residue so i just worked with the colibri, its too damn expensive though. What "brand" is your tank/butane?
Also i found that i can get 1000ml of 99.7% pure pentane for $30, so its not so bad. The guy in that thread posted pics of hexane honey oil, so i suppose pentane would work just as well as butane/hexane, right?

The tank i have is 5L and has no "brand" ;) Just a regular butane tank, i condense the vapors from the tank and run them on to my "tube".
You could use Pentane, has a lower bp. Never tried it myself but i think you could get some really nice results with it! Let us know! That would be good because pentane is also cheaper for me!
