View Full Version : Why does Apple get so much free publicity?

Everyday I see a news story about the iPhone, iPod, iTunes, or some speech by that faggot Steve Jobs. Yet, I almost never see "news" about Microsoft products and whenever I do it's almost always bad, unlike the media's constant praise of Apple.

Despite the media hype, Apple products are inferior to their Microsoft counterparts in every practical way. They cost more, they crash at least as much, less software is available, and they're generally less maintainable and expandable. People buy Apple products to be "cool" rather than for practical use. They're more a music company than a computer company and the idea of buying music online is absurd when you consider how easy it is to pirate and that ripped MP3s are superior to DRMed iTunes shit. Not that I'm a big fan of Microsoft either.

Anyway, why is the media always shining its spotlights on Apple? Is there some sort of conspiracy going on where Apple pays mainstream media companies for favorable coverage? It's not like mac fags make up a significant portion of the population, and they can just go to their retarded mac blogs anyway.

Apple is owned by Microsoft, didn't see that one coming did you?

It's like those Truth commercials, they still advertise cigarettes but with reverse psychology.

http://justinhartman.com/2007/11/23/microsofts-equity-in-apple/

From Apple's 2003 SEC filing:

"In August 1997, the Company and Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft) entered into patent cross license and technology agreements. In addition, Microsoft purchased 150,000 shares of Apple Series A nonvoting convertible preferred stock ("preferred stock") for $150 million. These shares were convertible by Microsoft after August 5, 2000, into shares of the Company's common stock at a conversion price of $8.25 per share. During 2000, 74,250 shares of preferred stock were converted to 9 million shares of the Company's common stock. During 2001, the remaining 75,750 preferred shares were converted into 9.2 million shares of the Company's common stock."

Sorry, I had to check sources myself, I had originally heard this from someone, but you have to admit that's a lot of shares. Regardless apparently they have all been sold. Not to mention the whole Anti-trust mess MS would end up in if they did own Apple stock. My apologies for unsubstantiated claims.

People who worship Apple are the same people who stop liking a band when they go mainstream. They want to be different and they want something that's more exclusive. Everybody has Windows, Apple is the alternative. And everyone knows how "cool" the alternative is.

Actually, quite the opposite.

Apple people like a band once they have become mainstream, while knowing nothing about a band when it was underground (Like flocking to iPod because it is popular, never owning another Apple product before).

They are the bandwagon group. They want to be counter-culture, but they are really just popular culture.

Hmm, I see what you mean. But i was talking more about people who use Mac computers and bash Windows. I'm sure we can both agree though that the people who try to be different through buying Apple are absolute douchebags of the first degree.

I guess the Apple computer buyers are slightly different than iPod buyers.

The day I can play racing sims on mac I'll switch, till then fuk em. Isn't it funny how as of a few years ago the apple logo still had a rainbow on the bitten apple, heralding back to the demise of Alan Turing? Now it's white, because God forbid they use a black apple, or a green one, or a red one. White is neutral, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but seeing as how NBC paid millions and millions for someone to design their pee-cock, it makes me wonder how important a company logo is to said company.

We have to use Macs at university for word processing and I can say that there's not been a single time that something hasn't gone wrong on them. Be it not recognising the network, failing to detect the printer or just plain locking up. Apple is not infallible.

all it ever does is crash and fuck up when you ask it to do the simplest of tasks.

the only thing i have against Apple are most of their costumers and their prices.

I think both operating systems have their uses. Windows is great for a work environment because it's simple enough for the average person to use yet is cheap to buy in large quantities and can run every application you will ever need. Apple is great for people who are somewhat new at computers and just need it to get things done quickly and efficiently. Sure, they are a bit more expensive, but Apple has great customer service and you don't have to dick around with anti-viral software and faulty hardware.

Why do we get contradictory stories about Macro$cam.

The "Microsoft Disk Operating System" or MS-DOS was based on QDOS, the "Quick and Dirty Operating System" written by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products, for their prototype Intel 8086 based computer.

QDOS was based on Gary Kildall's CP/M, Paterson had bought a CP/M manual and used it as the basis to write his operating system in six weeks, QDOS was different enough from CP/M to be considered legal.
http://inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aa033099.htm

Microsoft purchased QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System), a rip-off of CP/M (proven in court) from Seattle Computers for next to nothing and set out to finish it up. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't have the skills required for operating systems, so IBM had to do much of the finish work just to get the PC out the door.

Having almost no investment in DOS (Digital Research, Seattle Computers and IBM had done nearly all the work), no production costs (IBM did the production)
and competing with companies that had a lot invested in their product, Bill Gates decided to sell at a price lower than others could reasonably match to drive competitors out of the business.
http://outsidetouch.com/appendix%20d--microsoft%20corporation.html

Gates ripped off Kildall with IBM's help and then doublecrossed IBM.

But people worship him because he is super rich.

Vista is ridiculous. The computers are so powerful we need bloated crappy software to waste processing power.

Let's face it, the average computer user has the brain of a Spider Monkey. - Bill Gates

I have never owned a Mac, but I do not like them. I like to make my own PCs. This does not really work with macs. Nothing against them otherwise. Apart from 1 button mice.

However my current PC which I got 2 years ago has not blue screened even once. It has crashed to desktop on rare occasions, when I have been playing games, but that was the game. It had a problem where it would restart when playing some games but that was the stock GPU cooler failing. The only time Windows has ever broken for me is when I am fiddling with it. Also I do not dick around with anti virus either, I just be careful.

People exagerate way too much.

To anser the question. Maybe because of shared interests between Apple and the media?

Meh. At the end of the day, it all comes down to preference.

I've had a lot better experiences using a Mac, so I'm gonna continue using it (not to mention pretty damn good video editing software Final Cut Studio, which costs hella less than Avid).

People who prefer to use Windows, will do so until they can find something better (not necessarily Apple software/hardware), just like Mac users will switch over if another company brings out something that is more practical for them (aside, all the mega fanboys ofc.)

It's all personal choice, or at least it should be. Fags that buy a computer because it's "cool" probably don't use their computers for anything worthwhile anyway.

This thread is about why apple get so much free publicity, not whether macs are good or not.

I sense a sinister conspiracy here.

You must be some kind of fucking idiot, or someone who likes to severely fuck around with stuff if your XP crashes all the time.

I bet you're a bullshitting son a bitch who's posting from your mum's XP laptop and it runs smooth as fuck but you just wanna appear cool. Admit it, fag.

Honestly, Windows XP runs stable, provided you don't overload it with too many applications, which most people do anyway. My system runs great and crashes/locks up only occasionally when I don't have more than 10 programs installed, but when you start to install many programs, the system slows down.

The great thing about Windows is the API, which makes it incredibly easy to do most functions using windows. But, at the same time, it tends to be slower. Also, adding and removing programs leaves data in the registry and hard drive that tends to bog it down. It also doesn't help that Windows runs programs at startup all at once, which slows down shit.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Windows, but it's not the worst thing in the world.
