Which would you pick to stay alive.
No one would ever know what you did.
I'd pick my dog.

my dog for sure.
Well, since no one would know, I would pick my dog.
Being an innately selfish human, why would I choose to protect someone I have never met, when I could protect something that I do know and love.

Lets one up it.
Your whole family or 10 000 people in China?
Me? Fuck the 10 000 I don't know them. This is the way most people would react. There was a book or something written about this I read once...forget what the crux of it was though.

Plus China needs some population control. They are going to fuck the human race if they don't slow down.
NO ONE would choose the stranger

I would pick the stranger, but I can't stand my dog, we just can't find a place to give her away to.
Depends.
If the stranger is a hot girl, yes. If not, depends if they look like a douche bag or not.

I love my dog but I think it would depend on the circumstances. Would I know anything about the stranger? Would the stranger have a family?
These things could sway my opinion easily. It would be easier for me to get over my dog than say a husband over his wife.
Unless his wife is a cheating whore.

You would never know about them, so who cares?
I think in a group, most people would pick the stranger to live, just because it sounds fucked up.

EDIT 2:
I can feel sad for random people, wondering about them dying; they have families and friends and can't really say that I feel 'nothing' for random people.

I pick me
You or 1 billion strangers?
I pick me
Fuck dude I'd kill the stranger over my pet dog which I don't even have. I'd kill the stranger over my favorite pair of jeans.

When asked the same question about my roommate and my chickens, I picked my chickens. He was in the same room at the time. In retrospect maybe not the best time to be honest.
I'd pick the random stranger, although I don't have a dog. :p

Are you guys kidding me?
I would chose the random stranger. Dogs are useless beings made to accompany people. They have no place in the world except in your home. Without you, they are nothing.
They don't think like humans, nor can they perform any of the basic human activities that can get us ANYWHERE. For fucks sake, any human can plant a garden.
Sure you could POSSIBLY get the retard human that can't do shit, but how much more pleasure would you get out of killing that retard with your own bear hands, instead of watching your dog die from old age anyway?
I would chose my dog because stangers really hurt and are a bitch to remove. Besides, you didnt even say what kind of stanger. Is it a bee stanger or what?

What about the human who doesn't plant a garden, and would rather drive an SUV and consume resources without giving anything back to civilization?

Nevermind. I'm sorry, Totse, but I changed my mind.
I would chose my dog.
Thanks to Kleenex I was able to dig deeper past my original thought.
It is foolish to gamble on a human that could turn out to be a selfish human who doesn't give anything back to the world. Humans can be homes to the greatest of consciousness, but the majority is a waste of time and space.
My dog is part of my life, therefore, an extension of myself.

I would definitely pick my dog. However, were the question would I rather kill my dog or a random stranger I would have kill my dog.

Executioners in prisons have been killing strangers on the death row since the earliest civilisations.
If you were told that the stranger is a really really bad person, would you still chose your dog?
What if you were just told that the stranger deserves to die, what choice would you make then?
You see, a lot of people would do things they'd never do on their own when told to do them by others. Really sad, that.

Rural Vermont
And its not that I would be affected more by their death, its that I have a greater responsibility. People are responsible for their own lives; I'm responsible for my chickens lives.

I'd pick my dog.And as for ME... *Starts cracking up laughing* You know what I would pick?
Both or neither - eithers good.
Hmm. See I really value human life. But I also really love my dog. I would probably choose the person, but then get all emo over my dog and it would be a very boring movie at that point. As for the me vs a bunch of other people someone brought up earlier, I'd choose the bunch of other people if it really meant the survival of the species. Of course its mostly because I watch too much Doctor Who.

Why is the life of an ant worth any less than the life of a human?
Why is the life of an ant worth any less than the life of a human?
Because I can't have meaningful conversations with the ant. Or have sex with it. Really, we could argue this for a long time but ultimately I do value all life, just when it comes down to it I'll choose a human to save because I can actually relate in some way to it. This was just situational. If it came down to it I'd attempt build the modern version of Noah's Ark that saves as much as I can. I'd also put bad-ass rockets and lasers on it and we would all go on a cosmic journey.

Yeah, just being philosophical.
And why is that humans try to preserve every single species that exist on the planet nowadays? That is a bit weird, if you think about it. We're just probably afraid to screw up the Earth too much.

I cried for a month when my dog died. And just before that I was getting convinced that I'd become an emotionless biorobot.

My dog is still with me, but I know I'd be an emotional wreck once he passes. Heck the Futurama episode 'Jurassic Bark' where Fry revisits the memories of his dog, makes me sad.

It depends which dog it is. If it was one of my younger dogs, I'd pick them over the stranger in a heartbeat. If it was my 13 year old dog, I'd have to think about it. I love her, but she's lived a long and hopefully happy life, and I don't want to see her waste away as she gets older, so I might pick a stranger over her depending on what I knew about the person.
I would of thought this but i was talking to 5 other people and 3 of them picked the stranger. 4 of us had pets.

We can only admit here that we'd pick the dog because it's anonymous.

Depends, if you had to kill them yourself, like face to face, or if it's just flick a switch and one room fills with gas. Bad example, but you get my point.
I'd probably let my pet dog live, I don't know, if I happen to have an aggresive dog at that point in time, I'd probably let the stranger live.
