I've been in the Australian army now for 12 months, ever since basic training i have wanted to get out. Trialling the army for several months after basic training and I've come to the conclusion that the Army really isn't my sort of bread and butter. How can i get out of the Army?
Ok i'm ready to take the psychological approach now

Why isn't the army for you? talk to a shrink and say you want out and tell them the reason and you might get out. Taking drugs won't get you kicked out.

Living so far away from home, 2982 Km's actually! I have a girlfriend back home who they wont allow me to live with because I live on base, there making me stay living on base too. I dislike the amount of idiotic people the army employs and I'm forced to live + work with. Lack of job interest too also plagues my mind, oh and also the low income also comes into play
Seeing a shrink is probably one of my only options, I just don't know what to say

What a lot of people here do that have girlfriends and live on base is they ghost their dorms. Basically, them and their girlfriend get a cheap apartment off base and they just let their leadership know "Yeah, I'm going to ghost my dorm room".
Well, leadership here lets them do that, because the only reason to force someone to stay on base would be if leadership has very good reason to believe that said individual just can't handle living on their own.
In the US, if you're not married (or you're not at least an E4, and thats only under SOME circumstances), you won't get a housing allowance. If it works the same there, then your girlfriend would also have to be working to help pay the bills, or you'll have to room with some other couple or something. That's usually how it goes around here.
Otherwise dude, if you really want to get out, you should have known what you were getting yourself into. I dont know how the Australian military works, but doing drugs, acting crazy, or purposefully injuring yourself to get a discharge wont get you out in the US. It'll have you in jail.
Either way, you could always talk to a chaplain. I mean, that's what they're there for if you're really stressed out.

Alright, This is my topic.
I am not sure about the Australia, but in America we have Chapter 5-17
This is Other Designated Physical or Mental Conditions.
You get an honorable discharge, and you should be good.
but seeing as you are in Australia, Can't really help you.

I'm in a similar boat - allow me to explain.
I wound up enlisting as an 11Bravo (Infantry). I later found that this job isn't particularly one I was going to like, seeing as I prefer to work with abstract ideas instead of grunt work.
"WELL THEN WHY'D U SIGN UP 4 TAHT THEN U SHULD NO WAT UR GETTING INTEW" Is usually the response that I get (and I see you've gotten), but don't really pay attention to it. Nobody knows if they're REALLY going to like they're job until they start doing it. No recruiter paints a totally unbiased picture for you and there's no way to try it and decide to leave if you don't like it. Sure, you might be able to read about the job description, but even then, that's not doing it.
How long are you in for? I'm in for three years. And Honestly? It's not that bad. The benefits are ok too. I would advise you to just stick it out a wee bit longer. But if you really feel like you can't handle the stress, then regardless of what other people say, you should probably speak with a chaplain or go seek mental health (Which is nothing to be ashamed of).
As far as the American Army, being suicidal within the first 180 days (or possibly...ever) is a way to get out. But I'm not condoning anything. I really think your best bet is to see a chaplain.

Make a pass at your commanding officer.

When did you finish at ARTC and what IETs did you do? I know you can bail after Kapooka, but I'm not sure after that. I think you may be doomed to serve out your contract. Just do a corps transfer to Ordnance and become a Q-y.

So you're already in one of the slackest corps of the army. I should know. I transfered from RAInf to RAO to become a Q-y.
See if you can transfer your contract to the Reserves. Talk to a reserve recruiter.

NO!
Wait.
This is even better than the gay idea.
Tell the shrink that you're depressed and contemplating suicide. Then, on a separate note, talk about how you wish you could do something that people would remember you for.
That should scare the fuck out of the shrink and almost certainly get you discharged.

Are you and the girlfriend recognised defacto (by the military that is)? Getting that done might be a step in the right direction if you think she'd move to where you are.
After basic and IET it's pretty hard to get out. Try for a transfer to the reserves, no guarantees but life in a reserve unit's a lot cruisier (even if they just post you to a reserve unit as an ARA soldier).
Don't do the stupid "drug/act crazy" bullshit. There's ways out of/around this that will let you come out ahead and free of a criminal/mental health related record.
The Corps transfer idea is a good one, see if there are any jobs you'd rather do.

I'm ready for anything at the moment, I just want out of the Army as soon as possible. Apparently if the Army discharges you for a mental health problem you didn't have prior to enlisting, and being related to something that has happened time you served. You can get a pension out of it?

I wouldn't count on that too much.
Psych discharges can bar you from some pretty good jobs in the future and that WILL be on your record and visible to any employer who cares enough to look into your background.
You haven't been there that long, chances are they'll get out of paying you whatever little pension it might be (especially because you didn't really earn it). Have you done or experienced anything as a transportie that's going to be an accepted reason for you to be considered disabled? They're not just going to give you cash because you pretend you're hearing things.
Your best, simplest, least likely to end with you in jail for fraud or missing good opportunities later in life because you pretended to be a fruitcake is you finishing your enlistment.
