View Full Version : I'm thinking about joining the RAF..
But, I'm not the most confident of people, I suffer from alot of anxiety and I'm bi-polar.
Will this affect my chances?
I'm going to the Dr's this week to get some medication for my anxiety, but I thought if it's on my medical records then RAF recruitment will see me as unfit for duty as they prefer people that are confident and can take on anything.
Any thoughts?
I can't see anxiety and flying jets going together very well.
They won't accept you with bi-polar...

Why? It's not that much of a problem, I was more concerned about the anxiety
I don't plan on flying a plane lol, I was thinking more along the lines of driver or mechanic because I want to go into that sort of field.
Why not the Royal Navy or the Army then?

I attempted to join roughly 7 years ago, but was rejected after I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Back then there were 3 main deal breakers to do with mental health. These were schizophrenia, epilepsy and bi-polar personality disorder...

You could always try the American Army, their desperate for anybody...
I'll probably just go with joining the T.A., then I could have a full time career in mechanics and work that into it, and make an easy £1k a year for doing basic training 1 day a fortnight :D

I wouldn't mind being a spitfire pilot.

I agree, at some time in my life I'm going to get my pilots licence and look into buying a classic plane, god knows how much that would cost.. I don't really want to think about it to be honest
EDIT: Spitfire Mk XIV - £1.35m haha.
I'd rather have a Junkers Stuka anyway :D

Since you don't know what you're talking about, I'd advise you to leave this thread and not come back.
Basically, sorry to say it, but practically no real military will take someone with bipolar disorder.

At one stage I held an ultralight licence. Flying is achievable by most people. I remember there was a company up in Queensland producing 80% scale spitfires that cost about $300,000 and they could be registered as an ultralight.

If I fail my AS Levels then I'm joining the RAF either as ICT Specialist or Weapons Systems Operator (Crewman) hopefully.

in all seriousness if you fail your As levels, try and retake in the same year as your A levels, its what i did and it means now instead of starting on 16k i can start on 33, its really worth it so think about it, plus things like that DO factor in to promotions etc
