When isopropyl (C3H8O) is mixed with chlorine (Cl)
what gas is liberated from this reaction?
isopropyl alcohol?
mixed with chlorine gas?
you replace some hydrogens with chlorine, making HCl. you need to explain what the conditions were, because i really doubt you bubbled chlorine gas through isopropyl alcohol (mainly because you couldn't notice a gas coming off).

He's probably talking about the silly "chlorine bomb" where you drop pool chlorine tablets in some isopropyl.
FYI OP, Chlorine tablets are not (Cl), bu is CaCl2O
'
I don't know the gas. I'd guess Hydrogen.
the chemical of importance is the hypochlorite, which naturally decomposes into chlorine gas and oxygen. mixed with anything easily oxidisable (glycerine for example) and it will 'explode', but many chemicals will also catalyse the natural decomposition.
im not sure if the alcohol is being oxidised or acting as a catalyst (or both), but the gasses that come off are chlorine and oxygen in roughly equal amounts.

i would assume you are talking about isopropyl alcohol and chlorine gas
im not particularly sure.
isoprop alcohol is secondary. so in an oxidation reaction, will form a ketone. however we are using Cl2, not an oxidiser like MnO4-.
it may form a ketone and create HCl as a byproduct, or it may not do anything at all. i dont think it would do anything else

Yes im talking about the "chlorine bomb" but i was just curious about the reactions that occur, and yah it was chlorine tabs (crushed to a powder) and isoprpyl alcohol(70%), it was in small amounts, on a smooth stone surface,
the two sat together for about 20 sec. and then bubbled and it smelled of chlorine but i was not sure
yeah, id go for chlorine and oxygen. the same thing would occur with the powder left on its own, it would just take a really long time. the alcohol just speeds up the reaction drastically.
its akin to the coke bottle mentos thing. the coke would bubble on its own slowly, but mentos gives it a surface for the bubbles to form (the more you crush up the mentos the more surface area you get, and more foam appears). it just speeds up the reaction to make it useful.

Seems to make sense:)

Two questions, is chlorine gas lethal to humans (if so how much?) and what is the most affordable liquid form of chlorine?
don't ask questions you can look up on wikipedia. do your own fucking research.

who was that directed at?
the ian rogers person. facts like the toxicity of chlorine can be found with a simple google search.

Be careful with this combination. HTH (Pool Chlorine Tablets) reacts very violently in the presence of hydrocarbons. I've seen someone get badly injured combining HTH and isopropyl alcohol.
