It used to be for the elite back in (1990 whatever)?
Now I'm sure nowadays, this word is used every second of every day. You probably use it yourself, in fact, you probably use it so much that you fit right into my blast path.
Yes, why the FUCK does everyone use the word "lol" like nothing? It has become a filler due to kids not really having anything meaningful to say. Seriously, does anyone in real life actually laugh after having typed "lol" (besides the people who type 'i loled irl')? I don't think so. Conversations on MSN/IRC/whatever get to the point where it is now something you just say automatically, signifying you have nothing more important to say on the subject.
It should be banned, since it has been abused by 13 year olds to the point faggoth's in runescape say "L" now because they're too lazy to take 1 second out of their 10 hours of playing RS each day to type "o" and "l".
Words like "lmao" and "rofl" are also becoming subject of this.
Its fine if you laugh, or say it once in a while after a punny (yes, punny) statement-- but not 10x in a minute.
It was never a word, it's an abbreviation. (in english)
radar is an abbreviation and a word, go check your dictionary before you talk about stuff you don´t understand ..

Don't be a faggot. You sure as hell knew what I meant. Contribute to the discussion unless you have nothing meaningful at all to post. Last thing we need is pointless shit posts like these.
As you can see, people have stated it as an abbreviation of words. If it makes you feel much better, consider it three words.
Nonetheless that still makes you like a complete clueless sheep after such a stupid comment. Congrats, you've made the dumbest post of the month.
Twit.

"lol" isn't a word. Check a dictionary.
On topic, the use of the word "lol", it was stupid from the start. People that use it endlessly can't have normal conversations. (my opinion ofcourse)
do I really have to explain the uneducated kids the evolutionary process of abbreviations becoming words by increasing common usage? radar is where lol is going to be very soon. you can spill some shit at me because you don´t want to see that you failed, why should I care? you can´t deny truth and you won´t be able to stop it. it´s not in the dictionary yet, but it will be ..

So it's not a word yet, but it might become one soon in your opinion.
Seems I am right.
It was never a word, it's an abbreviation. (in english)
so that statement was right in your opinion?
and by process I also mean progress. it´s already a word for most people who know it, it just has to get the state of being a dictionary-relevant word ..

Dictionaries don't list it and every other source (and to the best of my own knowledge) said it was an abbrevation. So I assume it's just that.
I'm not sure how or when new words get reckognised as such as their is no central institute for the english language that would regulate such things.
I still think it's just an abbreviation, and since it doesn't get used in normal correspondence or any other place outside of fora populated by 13 year olds I don't think it will get accepted as a word very soon (hopefully never).
In any case, there is no definite answer here I guess.
we´re hopefully not being called the generation lol, but you can be sure there will be booktitles containing it ..
oh and there´s no need to quote every text everytime if your reply is RIGHT beneath ..

Whilst most of these people have had shit statements on this subject, I have pondered this myself. I am even guilty of this from time to time, typing "lol" when I don't laugh in real life, and truthfully, does it really mean, "laughing in real-life" or that it is embedded with the definition of "that is funny." Truth be told, I prefer to people using "lol" than people talking in text-speak, which is just down-right aggravating. As for other abbreviations, in example, R.A.D.A.R., it was used to prevent scientist from typing, or writing, out "Radio Detection and Ranging", whereas, I am sure it is a lot easier to type out "Laugh out Loud" or even "Ha Ha" for the lazy. Just my two cents.

I've always been annoyed when I read a lol, lmao, lmfao, rofl, roflmao, etc. To me, it signifies a lack of anything substantial to say. I guess it's an attempt to add tone or at least some kind of perception of nonverbal communicaion to the conversation, since only about 5% of communication in real life is the literal meaning of the words we say.
Whatever the reason, I guess it gets the point across if you really were laughing out loud. Otherwise, just try to find some sarcastic remark to reply with.

lol wat?
It's like a spoken laugh/something to indicate a humorous statement, kinda similar to how the Japanese use -ka as a spoken question mark.
It's quite an evolutionary concept for English. We should embrace it instead of dismissing it because it's used by lots of 13 year olds.

I really hope "lol" isn't considered an evolutionary step. I also heard that capitalization in the beginning of sentences will soon be obsolete because of its laxed usage in emails and text messages. Is it evolution, or just another sign of a lazy economy?

God knows.
In one way I think that English is a very imperfect language, and has a lot to learn from others, but some changes which seem like are happening are the complete opposite to what I'd like. I'd love to see English become more poetic and more emotional: a bit like how it used to be, sounding something a bit more like Spanish or French, as opposed 2 bein simplified dwn as mch as psbl.
I like 'lol' because it can be used to describe something which cannot really be really described otherwise through our language. We could say "haha, that's funny" but it lacks the same effect. I have to admit, I use it quite often with some friends and it's very addictive. If you started using it, it'd probably grow on you.... Maybe...
as for getting rid of capitalisation, i'm not for that at all. capital letters make sentences look pretty. typing with no caps looks ugly as shit. :/

I agree, if they remove capitalization I will still do it anyways.
They can't because we need it in science... ex: Periodic Table
"lol" is used to convey an emotion that is otherwise unable to be communicated via text speak. Obviously we don't use it in person because of tone, mood, and facial expression which are able to convey that emotion. When we read "lol" we infer a light-hearted or non-serious tone to the rest of the sentence, or an expression of joy or humor. I do see it as an evolutionary step for internet communication. Phrases such as "GTFO fag" and "what is this I don't even" also serve similar purposes in accurately communicating emotion over the internet.

People in real life actually say "lol" out loud... like pronounced in real life.

I know this girl. She says
"O M G, L O L"
thats
"Oh Em Gee, El Oh El"
Sometimes I want to crack her in the head with a cue stick. But I'm never near a pool table. :(
