View Full Version : What makes your life Significant.
My life feels a bit insignificant at the moment.I've given it some thought lately and I've decided that the things that give significance to my life at this time is: Money,Family, objects I plan on owning and a few tasks that I plan on accomplishing in the near future.
I need to get more goals.
What gives your life significance?
Be it Objects,Hobbies,goals,plans...
We need to make long term goals IMO.We may be able to help each other out.In fact i'm going to make a Thread about it.

Nothing makes my life significant. My life is insignificant, unimportant to the rest of the universe. Unimportant even to the rest of the world, until such time as I (potentially) end up doing something important for the human race. Most people's lives are always insignificant, and mine probably will be too.

Im with willancs on this, Accepting that ones life has little to no significant, and then striving to change that through a series of contributions is basically the most purpose ones life can take on.
PS Who asks for life advice on totse? Come on people, Think
making other peoples lives a little better. id like to be remembered not as the smartest man, not as the richest, not as the strongest, and not as the smoothest. id rather be remembered for the good things that i did to help people worse off than me, either financially or emotionally. im here to make this world better, and i think that others should fall in.

Are you a humanist?
Did you read anything by Kurt Vonnegut?
Because you sound like you read God Bless you Mr. Rosewater and took it to heart. But that is one of the best ways to make your life more significant.

i have not and havent done enough research to classify myself as a humanist, im just a dude who is trying to make the world a better place. theres too many things wrong with the world already, why would i want to add my negativity to the mix?
is god bless you mr rosewater a spiritual book? like religion based because i dont agree with religion in the least bit. im about to download it anyways though
edit: is the book called god bless you dr kavorkian?

What is it that makes ones life significant?
The things he did?
The changes he made?
The continuation of the tradition that he was born into?
Why would none of these be important?
Why would all of these be important?
Why would one of these be important?
Are you separate from the rest of the universe?
No?!
Then anything you do is significant.

You have a seriously messed up view on what's important.
What do you mean by "significant" in the first place?
Goals, money and family? Would that make your life insignificant if you lost your money, family and the means to achieve your goals? Do you really think that YOUR life is any more or less significant than some random hobo begging for change on the street?

How you use the above to contribute to society.

No lives are significant as far as I'm concerned. I'm Nihilist if you think that has any effect on it. I wouldn't care if everyone on the planet died in a horribly painful way, and that includes me. We're all dead anyway.

Certain people in it. Thats what matters most. I could easily give away all the shit I own if it meant staying with the people that mattered most to me. Chris McCandless said it best when he wrote, "happiness is only real when shared" in the margins of one of his journals. If you find happiness and meaning to live in the people around you, then thats all you need.
Nothing.
But so what? What's so bad about insignificance? If you ask me, accepting the ultimate meaningless of life is the ultimate freedom--it should be liberating, not depressing.

If you feel that anything outside yourself makes your life significant, you are outer-directed, which is not conducive to spiritual growth.
This also tends to give you a timebound, ego-dominated perspective, which shortens your life.

Without OP having clearly defined 'significance', we can't really give a quantitative value of our life in significance. This, and everything is relative anyway, so it sort of makes it a moot question. To me, significance is equivalent to the amount of people that you have affected in your life for the better. Let me ask you this: How many people will show up at your funeral? This number is directly proportional to how good of a life you have led, in my opinion.

My life is significant for the moment... to me anyway. I just finished high school and am about to start my first year at a university. I'm finally the controller of my destiny. *breathes in* Ahh, it feels good to be free.

Yo totseans.
This is my first post in fucking ages. I came back and realized just how pointless most forum talk is. It's just a bunch of people who think they are more intelligent than they are trying to impose their opinions on one another with highly limited success.
Just ignore that, because I don't want to hijack the thread and if you get worked up about it then you are proving my point.
Anyway,
Yes, your life is insignificant, on a large stage, however, does that matter at all? To most people, no. Because in this current state, you are not the universe. You are you, and if you are not getting affected by something, it almost may as well not exist. So, what makes my life significant? Emotions. Love. All that nonsensical bullshit. To be honest, if I'm without human contact for more than a few days, I couldn't care less about dying because I am insignificant, even to myself. What keeps my life significant apart from that is not thinking deeply. I just laugh with a bunch of idiots at my school that spew vacuous bullshit all day. I check out girls with nice boobs. I make music. That's my life.
