View Full Version : The Military and Technolgy
It has come to my attention that much of the great technology in the world has come from the human want to kill anther human or defend its self from being killed. I am talking about the Military. Let me list some examples, I don't feel like citing and its not the point of my post any way.
The US and Soviet Space program - The military technology and influence is so blatant. Most of the rockets up to the N1 and US's Saturn V and Soviet's N1 were rather misses with the nuclear bomb replaced with a money or something or the space rockets where made of several parts of other military rockets. Its a shame that there was no need to nuke mars.
Hubble telescopic - Optics from spy satellites, but faced the other way
Nice satellite view maps - spy satellites with nothing better to do
A large Amount Early Nuclear research - You know this story
Teflon - made in the pursuit to extract uranium (not the space program) , UF6 is some really corrosive stuff
The internet - ARPANET was started by the US DOD
A large amount of the advancement in aviation - Those commies lived a long ways away, we need good planes.
Gyroscopic auto pilot - First seen in the V2 rocket
Now to the point of my post does any one have any more information on this? I would really like to read more on this concept.

Automatic transmissions for motorcars and the Haber process for producing ammonia.
the use of solvents to extract metals came from the Manhattan project.
alot of chemical production methods come from various armed forces finding ways to make toxic gasses (in a similiar fashion to the haber process mentioned) and the like.
there are hundreds of examples. i wouldn't be surprised if wikipedia had a big list of them.

This is the best I could do: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_funding_of_science
http://www.unu.edu/unupress/unupbooks/uu38ne/uu38ne0a.htm Also seems to have some interesting information.
Duct Tape, Band Aids, etc.
GPS
Improvements in metallurgy and the understanding of materials
Not to mention alot of modern medicines, drugs and surgical techniques for treating patients.

I'm guessing the shit that the governments know how to do isn't anywhere near what is released to the public, imagine all the recovered crashed alien craft over the years, reverse engineering all them, finding out how things work, surely they would of had an idea how to do things better, propulsion (aurora spyplane?), weapons, anti gravity, etc.

There is a difference between "the Internet" and "the World Wide Web". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet#The_World_Wide_Web for Wikipedia's bit on the difference. The differentiation is nit-picky for most everyday uses, but there it is.

Mankind needs a common enemy. I think its almost the only way to unite us and then imagine what we could do.

Yea, those aliens sure are great. They make such awesome space crafts, now if only they wouldn't drink and drive. Seriously though you dumb fuck, I'm new so I'm not sure if you're being serious so if you're not I'm sorry -flame me- if you are then get fucking real. if aliens could make vehicles capable of going through space with ease then I think they could make a good auto pilot.

That's a dumb argument. Who said it has to be able to go through space with such ease? Say humans send a probe or something off deep into space. After a long time I wouldn't be that surprised if it crashed on a planet and if there were intelligent life forms on that planet they could likely learn a few things from it.
Keep the discussion within the realms of accepted/mainstream/standard (?) science, or bring it to Science of the Damned. So, you know, no more UFOs.

Just think where we would be now if the government put all that military funding into general science funding.
ex:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconducting_Super_Collider
Would have had almost 4.5 times the energy output of the LHC.
A shame really.

I really wish that there was something in the constitution that said something to the effect of "for every dollar you spend on the military, you must spend a dollar on a project to better humanity"
It's really depressing when a great invention is hijacked and used to kill people. Airplanes are a great example. Fireworks are another. In 1903, the wright brothers flew a powered aircraft for the first time in human history. Eleven years later, it was being used to kill during the "great" war.

It's not the tool that's ever the problem. It's how you use it. A pistol/aircraft/etc. can be used for good or evil, depending on the person behind it.

I lol'd.
Anyway, I wonder what technology the military does have stashed away? Not paranormal bullshit, but actual technology. My guess is some crypto stuff, and some nuclear stuff.

I completely agree. I'm not saying that the wright brothers did WRONG by venturing forth into the skies. Just airplanes as an example of a scientific discovery that was immediately used for war.
Although I'm not sure I can see a pistol being used peacefully to further human knowledge for the betterment of mankind...
