I've done a little bit of research into the subject and it seems like they're are plenty of programs that will set you up with visa's/work/etc. Thing is I'm a dual citizen (us/nz) so I'm not sure if those programs would either apply or be necessary.
For you that live down there, how difficult would it be for me to find work and a place to live? I just graduated from high school, have enough saved away for a ticket plus a little extra and think it'd be fun to do a little work and travel for a year or two before committing to college.
Thanks!

If you are a dual citizen it shouldn't be a problem for you.
You need a IRD# (inland revenue department) number for them to pay your tax to, thats about it.
You get free medical care here, with a max of NZ$3 per quater for each medicine.
I think the minium pay rate is about $NZ12 (US$8.50?)
Thats for any job, even pushing shopping carts back to the supermarket, which is a job advert I just saw.
There is plenty of work around, lots of jobs if you will work behind a counter or have some special job experience.
If you want to travel around NZ & work theres lots of 'fruit picking' jobs about.
They let foreigners do that job under special 'work visas' if thats a problem.
They can arrange housing & transport to work.
You get to meet plenty of other people that are doing what you do that way.
If you rent a house with, say 5 others, weekly costs will be about NZ$125.
rent each $40-$70 pw , power av $150 month (for 4 people), food $30 - $60.
I pay, per week, no rent (ha ha!) $50+ food, $20 power.
cellphone costs $40mth with 300mins off peak
sat TV = $40 mth
homephone $40 mth,
internet connection $40 mth (landline)
Bus costs normally about $2 per trip, $4 across city.
Petrol is $2.20 litre
Milk is about $2litre
Beer is $1 - 340mls can, $12+ dozen cans
Internet is $4 or cheaper, per Hr
pot is $20 tinny (1gm)
It'l cost NZ$400 for petrol to go from top to bottom of NZ, $60 side to side. $50 for the ferry between islands, Nth - Sth - Stewart island.
Days Ski lift ticket is about NZ$60, cheap skis/boots at second hand dealers.
A shitty car is worth NZ$400+
(make sure its got rego/warrant or it costs $200 fine for each & you WILL get picked up on it, DON'T drink/drive!)
or buy a car for $2000 with wof/rego & sell it a year later for $1000.
(a relistic yrs cost is - $1000 inc drop in value & wof/rego & insurance.
WOF is $25- every 6 mths +what it costs to bring it up to Wof standard
Rego is $220 + yr
Insurance is about $280 (depending on situation/car value/you can get 3rd party ins)
Use 'Trademe' site to get a idea of jobs & costs.

That $20 Tinny is US$15, hope that helps...
Its a peice of Ali foil about the size of the foil in a cigerette packet.
Actually its 1/2 the width of the roll of foil, 2 inches high.
Inside theres a thin strip of bits of bud about the dia of a pencil.
Its rolled up & folded over at the ends.
Commonly called a 'Stick' or 'Tinny' or 'Foil' or 'Bullet'
Sometimes you can get 3 for $50 (or 6 for $100)
A, Oz is anything from NZ$300 - $500, normally $350
A, 0.1gm of Meth (P) is NZ$100 a bag (called a 'point') thats US$750 for 1gm!
The chicks aren't that easy, easyer if you are a tourist.
NZ's that small that they don't like 1 nite stands, word gets around.
Thats why theres more chance if you don't actually live in the town.
Theres not much chance of getting mugged but theres a good chance of having your car broken into if its tourist material.
Leaving for Christchurch on the 21st, then going straight to Methven to snowboard for a month or two. Once my money runs low I'm heading up to Palmerston North to meet a totse member and get a flat and job there (hopefully), then I'll just soak in a bit of the culture then head off home. Your guide is pretty good man, thanks a heap.
Couple questions: What's a good prepaid mobile company to go with, mostly for texting and international texts.
What's a good bank to go to that has minimal fees for transactions and lots of ATMs aorund?
Do you know of any skydiving places between Methven and Palmerston North that do 14,000ft jumps?
Do you know what indie/electro (justice, klaxons, boys noize, etc) music is, and if so, can you suggest ANY clubs that play that music in either Christchurch or Wellington?
Thanks a heap man.

I'd go with Vodafone, their Ph's have simcards, you might be able to get a overseas ph to work here, but check first.
A simcards $50, with $20 on it & $10 if you fill in the user detail form (I had a LOT of trouble trying to get that filled out on the internet, you need the ph to actually be there, as they send some code to it, or something.
I got mine filled out by a operator, she said there was something wrong with the site, but I don't beleave that.
WestPac is the most common bank, all banks have the same sorta fees, but look around if you intend all your $ transactions to be EFTPOS.
I just check when I buy something & if I need more money I get them to withdraw some $ at the same time as buying something.

From my understanding you just hire a car and get into it. That's what all the travelers here from the EU do.
Although all we're doing is driving like 45 minutes to the ski fields. I can't really be sure.
And about NZ birds being sluts, it's true. Trust me. If you stand out in ANY WAY, you actually have to beat them off with a stick.

If your coming to this part of the world for girls Aussie is the place to go. NZ girls are average looking and boring. Aussies are much more outgoing and friendly not to mention way hotter. As for a job It wouldnt be too hard to find something in auckland. As for getting work permits or residency i dont think that would be hard at all either we seem to let every asian and indian with minimal english into the country. Theyre taking over.

Apple picking is great fror tourists, they go outta their way to take care of you.
You'l get to meet plenty of other like minded people & figure the 'ins & outs'.
The general Kiwi needs to be asked, but will go outta their way to help you from there on.
Don't abuse this trust but take them up on their offers if you want to.

I lived in NZ for a while, and it's a complete bitch to get hired. I ended up working at the Warehouse until I decided to move my ass back to the US. =(
NZ girls aren't any hotter, but they are much more intelligent imo.
