A University student named Webster Cook took a Eucharist wafer and kept it instead of eating it. I cannot put into words the lunacy which followed.

These crazies are calling the stealing of a cracker a Hate Crime and the equivalent of kidnapping.

Original story (http://www.myfoxorlando.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail;jsessionid=912931E6387D06E86603288C86CA66A1 ?contentId=6932236&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1&sflg=1).

PZ Meyers ridiculed the Catholic League over their extreme lack of rationality, and requested of his readers that someone should send him a few crackers so he could desecrate them properly.

Now, Bill Donohue and the loonies at the Catholic League are attempting to get PZ fired from his position at the University of Minnesota.

I was planning on posting this [but with a "cracker" pun]! :(

Anyways, yes, these people are just jaw-droppingly stupid. They've even sent him death threats over this.

I can see this from two sides:

From the side of reason, this is completely ridiculous and only shows how religious fanaticism will be the downfall of humanity by blowing things out of proportion.

From the Christian side, once the communion wafer and wine undergo transubstantiation they cease to be merely bread and wine, and become the true body and blood of Christ.

EDIT: I was talking to my mom about this and she told me you can go to a church supply store and get unblessed communion wafers. Apparently they go good with melted cheese.

If such were truely the case, the government should intercede and put a stop to such practice. Cannibalism is a crime, and should not protected by the first ammendment.

^ Good thing reality isn't on their side, so I don't have to give them much sympathy.

Webster’s friend, who didn’t want to show his face, said he took the Eucharist, to show him what it meant to Catholics.
He should have crushed it right in front of them. Fucking fanatics. And people in america talk about "dem darn paki fanatics"....

Jesus christ. Even back when I was a 'christian' I would have thought this was insane.

Before christianity was created by constantine, the pagans would eat "magic" mushrooms and other entheogens in spiritual rituals instead of crackers.

It is unfortunate how fundamentalists act over things like this.

For a while, before he went officially nuts and was carted off to the local loony bin, my father (who was a carpenter, by the way) served as a deacon at our church (Presbyterian). Part of his duties was to supply the little bread cubes and grape juice for communion. One time, attendence was sparse and we had a lot left over.

On the way home after church, I must have scarfed down a couple years worth of communion munchies. No one got excited.

Back to topic--the whole communion thing strikes me as one of the creepier aspects of Christianity--what it is when you get to to it, is ritual cannibalism. I mean, sheesh--eat your dead granny, you go to jail; eat your dead god and you're good to go.

This is actually the reason many South American tribes made such great converts to Christianity. Many native groups believed that if they killed their enemy and ate him they would gain his powers. So when Spanish and Portuguese missionaries came touting the saving power of the body and blood of Christ, the natives welcomed them with open arms.

i couldnt find the vid so heres the transcript, from south park episode: do the handicapped go to hell

Sister Anne: Now let me explain how communion works. The priest will give you this round cracker. And this cracker is the body of Christ.
Cartman: Jesus was made of… crackers?
Sister Anne: No.
Stan: But crackers are his body.
Sister Anne: Yes.
Kenny: What?
Sister Anne: In the book of Mark, Jesus distributed bread and said "Eat this, for it is my body."
Cartman: So we won't go to Hell as long as we eat crackers.
Sister Anne: No no no no!
Butters: Well what are we eating then?
Sister Anne: The body of Christ!
Stan: No no no I get it. Jesus wanted us to eat him, but he didn't want us to be cannibals... So he turned himself into crackers. And then told people to eat him.
Sister Anne: No!
Stan: No?!
Butters: I can't whistle if I eat too many crackers.
Sister Anne: Look, all you need to know is that when the priest gives you the cracker, you eat it. Okay?
Boys: Okay...
Sister Anne: And then you will drink a very small amount of wine. For that, is the blood of Christ.
Cartman: Oh come on now this is just getting silly.
Sister Anne: Eric, do you want to go to hell?
Cartman: No!
Sister Anne: Then stop questioning me.

ps, im new anyone telling me how to insert quotes would be great thanks

Astonishingly, the stupidity doesn't stop there.

One of the people writing threats to PZ wrote her threatening e-mail through her company work address (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/07/mail_dump.php). PZ posted the e-mail, with the header information and all, and people have been writing in to company executives complaining about the threats.

I reserve the right to publicly post, with full identifying information about the source, any email sent to me that contains threats of violence.

That means the abuser's email addresses.
Ooo, I bet they're really regretting sending those messages now.

It's only cannibalism if you eat your own species, and it'd be a little more than a can o' worms for the government to make any definitions in this case. ;).

Woman got fired for threatening PZ:

Turns out that the person who sent the threatening email to PZ was the husband of the woman who got fired. He sent the email using his wife's laptop. He confessed Here (http://breakingspells.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/employee-of-1800flowerscom-issues-death-threats-to-professor/#comment-274)

The saddest part of the whole mess is that the dumbass blames PZ and everyone else for his wife's being fired:

"
I am going to write to mr. Myers and offer him my apologies for using such childish language, and the threatening way in which I presented myself to him. It is my hope that he will forgive me, or hold me accountable. However, I think it is his duty to repair the damage that he and his associates have
achieved through their concerted and organized campaign to punish both Melanie Kroll, and 1-800-flowers, who were completely blameless in this matter.
"

He doesn't comprehend that he is 100% at fault.

Also, how can he equate the threat of giving PZ till the end of the month to resign or suffer getting his brains kicked in to childish language?
