Anyone in TOTSE think this would be a good idea? We still have 3 1/2 years to plan/find sponsorship/train which should be enough. Might be enough time to get some smaller peaks done and get some(more) skills/experience.

Seriously, where do you live and what mountains have to climbed thus far? If you've all ready summited Mt. Hood and Mt. Kilimanjaro, you're well on your way.....but not ready for Everest.

I read some where that climbing everest will cost roughly $30,000, after all expenses.

Just go to nepal and visit mountain monestaries and villages, the big mountains, especially Mt Everest, are littered with thousands of oxygen tanks, would not be that beautiful imo.

This. And it's not that you can take down the expenses. You have to buy certain permissions to be able to go all the way up, those permissions cost around 15.000 euro. With this ofcourse comes helicopter rescue and such, these are all things that you HAVE to get if you want to go all the way to the top.

Besides that, I would also love to go to nepal for 2-3 months just to trek around the country and you're welcome to join me when I go :)

In the next year I intend to go there and volunteer at a school/orphanage, learn the language, then trek around for a month or so. Will be sure to hit you up and see if you're going.

Along with riding the Trans-Siberian, playing in the World Series of Poker Main Event and Skydiving, climbing everest is on (the bottom) my list of things to do before I die.

One day I shall... But not in 3 years. No where near enough time for me.

It's like £20,000 in total, that's going to take a shitload of saving, and you need to be in PRIME mental and physical strength. Whilst I'm still young, jobless and experimenting with drugs and being lazy, there's no way I'm going to manage it.

Uh.. how do they keep watch of who goes up there? Surely there isn't a circumferential lookout all around the mountain. They can't watch ALL the sides. As for search n rescue, I guess it comes down how far is one willing to go into the unknown (relatively) without a safety net. If I have prepared my body and mind for such a task, knowing that I can be saved with the push of a button, would just piss me off. it's almost like an insult. But that's just me.

I'm looking for something I can use for long term travel and something I don't have to check-in during flights. Any suggestions?

Something for long term travel and you don't have to check in? Impossible. Just your tent, sleepingbag and sleeping mat will take up alot of space.

That backpack you suggest is a good DAYPACK but I sure as hell wouldn't wanna be carrying that thing around for 7-8 hours a day, for several weeks. Just look at the shoulder straps, they look like they'll cut right tru your shoulders, not to mention that you'll never be able to put enough material in there to go trekking for a long period of time.

That backpack is 250 euro and it comes with a raincover.

The difference between your and my backpack is that:

- it has a waistband, which also lightens the preasure off your shoulders and back, which makes it easier to carry for a long period of time.
- has about 3 times the volume
- Has several large compartments which makes it easier to organize your bag
- has extra thick padding on the shoulderstraps which prevents it from hurting if you carry it for a long period of time
- Has a ventilation system at the back so your back doesn't start sweating like hell if you carry it for a long period of time.

I should've mentioned. I'm not trekking. Even if I do, it won't be for weeks at a time. I'm not taking a tent, sleeping bag, or a sleeping mat. I'll be taking a sarong to use as a sleeping mat. I'll dress in layers to keep warm if I have to.

I'm not carrying all that much clothes either. 1 or two changes of each in addition to what I'll be wearing. 1 MSR packtowel. toiletries adding up to less than a pound. Misc survival items adding up less than 2 pouinds. Flashlight, floss, sewing kit, gauze, compass, etc.

Hell, the heaviest thing in my pack is going to be a 15" powerbook (7lbs). And I'm still not sure if I want to take it or not. If not that, It's going to be a thick 300-400 page notebook which prolly wont weight even half of the laptop.

Again, my bad, I should've mentioned the type of travellin I'll be doing. I'm still looking for brand suggestions.

Well, anybody who wants to go earlier, on a more realistic trek. I'll be going to Nepal for 1 month next year (juli) and I'll be doing a 200km trek in the Annapurna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annapurna) region.
Starting in Pokhara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokhara) then to Marpa, to then work my way to Tilicho lake which is one of the highest lakes in the world at 4,919 meters high (16,138 feet) then to a little nice town called Manang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manang_District) and then via Ngawal and Bagarshhap back to Pokhara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokhara).

Oddly enough I had a related experience the other day:

I'm sitting in the dining room of my hostel (extremely visible to the street) on my laptop using the wireless and this old Japanese guy walks in. He's all excited and like "Harro! How are you? I am Hiroshi!" I was like "uhh...good I guess. How can I help you?" So he out of the blue asks if my computer is connected to the internet and if he can use it. I'm trusting, so I let him use it and went off and did some chores. When I get back he was super grateful and shook my hand a lot. He started telling me how he's a volunteer ski patrol guy around here and is in NZ to climb Mt Cook.

He then goes on to tell me that he is the Managing Sub Director of one of the biggest Sherpa companies in Nepal. He gave me his card, his direct line and his email and told me if I am planning to go to Nepal in the next year or so he will hook me up with great service and deals. He'd climbed each continents highest peaks, totaling around 32 of the highest in the world.

He even said casually "If you want to climb Everest I can easily help you with that". So I've been riding with him a couple times and his offers are legit.

If any one plans to go to Nepal any time soon I can contact him and set it up, or give you his details and let you set it up your self.

Well, I just made out the exact route on google earth, it's about 230km, and to be honest, in a month, that's about the max you can do. Do not underestimate the geography in Nepal, it's always up and down, so my guess is that we'll get about 12-15km done a day, if we don't stop, but I'll be taking my DSLR with me to get some good photos so I do plan on stopping every now and then. So that'll leave us with 7 days in the entire month that we can relax if we don't get delayed anywhere.
Now, if I don't get sufficient funds to fly to Alaska after that month I've been there, i'll be staying in Nepal for a second month and I'll be doing a trek in the Everest region.

So you'd say we could go in Juli and August. Problem is, then it's the monsoon season, and you really don't wanna go than. So the earliest and best time I can go is in Februari-March 2010, which are also the best months to go trekking in Nepal.

What are you talking about? I meant that if I have enough money :s. You know what that is? The thingy that pays for everything.
Hell no that I have depts anywhere.
I really don't see why you think I have mortgages or credit repayment anywhere?

No no, you got me wrong.

Because in your post you were saying how you were planning to go trekking for a few months, I was saying how that's the kind of life I want to lead - no huge debts that force you to always keep the salary coming in, and thus the freedom to get away for a few months sometimes.

I have ways to make money :) (BI related, unfortunately)

I got a lonely planet guide book thingy today for trekking in nepal. Had a quick flick through it, and it says the best months to go is sept-may(basically autumn, winter and spring).

Just pick a date/time and ill arrange moneys.

Ofcourse you can, I mean, it's a free world, you go and stand where you want. and exact date will probably be determined somewhere in April or May next year.

It's always more fun with other people anyway, communal gear can be split, instead of carrying it all yourself. If you break a leg, then someone is there to either finish you off or carry you back to town

Yup.

The sherpas can power walker up that fucker, but their like 5', have the strongest legs amongst anyone and have blood so thick(to absorb more oxygen) that it probably wouldnt flow out if they cut themselves.

Most people struggle to make it to the south/north col, let alone the summit. And Everest isnt the hardest mountain on earth

Steal a jet full of bricks with TOTSE carved in them and fly it into the peak. It'd be far more epic.
