View Full Version : Bret Favre

What is it with some of these guys that retire and then try to come back only a few months later? I remember seeing Bret crying on ESPN while announcing his retirement a short while ago and now he’s already saying he wants to come back and play. Favre is/was a great player and all, but he’s putting his old franchise in a shitty situation. After he announced his retirement, the Packers moved on and is trying to start fresh with a new guy at QB and now Bret wants to come back and disrupt the team. I don’t get why these guys do this shit. They talk about being a team player and all and then turn right around and pull this kind of low rent, self centered shit.
I understand that he has been a huge part of this franchise/team for many years, but should the Pack move on, allow him back or trade him for a younger guy that will help them in the future? I say trade him.

not to be an a-hole but you spelled a legendary ironman household-name QB's first name wrong three times...it's Brett.
To the point, I think they should allow him a chance in training camp to win the job back, and if they still don't want him after he puts Aaron Rodgers to shame (as I heavily suspect he would), they should trade him to some AFC team that Favre would want to play for. However, if they were to do that if he had an amazing training camp, it would make the Packers look like idiots for not keeping the player that would give them the best chance to win, which is Ted Thompson's stated goal.
I think there is a very good chance he'll get a shot at winning his job back from Rodgers because of a grassroots effort by Green Bay's fan/owners to pressure TT into letting him back onto the team with his starting job. Those however-many-thousands are the ones that paid money for an interest in the team, and get a say in the operations of the franchise. These are also the people that rented billboards and carved Favre's likeness in their cornfield effigy-mound style with their combines.
One last argument: I am a pretty rabid Brett Favre fan. I would LOVE to see him start for the pack next year, because that's where he belongs. A trade would probably slightly tarnish his mythical status, as he'd probably go to a more urban setting like Miami or Baltimore where the cold and desolate Green Bay conditions don't happen. I mean, those clips of him under center in a light snowfall with his breath condensing are part of his legacy, and him sweating his ass off in Miami would just seem too weird.
I think the Packers would have a better chance as a team if the following scenario played out:
1. The Packers take Brett Favre back, allow him a chance in Training Camp, which he will most likely make the best of, much to Rodgers' disappointment.
2. Also in Training Camp, the Packers keep a close eye on Matt Flynn and especially BRIAN BROHM. Brohm made an impact in OTA's, so much so that Mike McCarthy commented to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel about his quick learning abilities and understanding of the system.
3. If either of those guys perform fairly well, the packers TRADE AARON RODGERS. (EDIT: his contract expires after the '09 season anyway). The poor kid is gonna be pissed off. I do feel for him, and it's probably healthy for him to get a fresh start somewhere else, maybe an AFC team since he has studied under Favre for so long. He saw some action and performed pretty well when Favre got knocked out of the game against Dallas. He also has been injury prone. For his age, however, he could command about a third-round draft pick on the market. Which is probably better than what the Packers could get for Favre, since all teams know the Packers aren't really looking to keep him on the team right now.
4. With a promising rookie (maybe two) on the team, and the Shit Out Of Luck Kid gone, Brett Favre can complete his Second Coming, fulfilling the prophecy in the Book of Revelations. OK, I'm not THAT crazy of a Favre fan, but I'm pretty close.
Really, this scenario should be looked at. I can guarantee you if Ron Wolf was still GM, this would gain a LOT of attention...names like Brunell, Detmer, Hasselbeck, A. Brooks, Pedersen and Nall have all gone on to start in the league after backing up #4. With three viable candidates, I would take my chances with the Packers' QB drafting history, because it really has been solid over the past 20 years.
Thanks for reading, please bump this thread because it really is an interesting and complex story.

I guess that since I’m just a rank-n-file BreTT Favre fan I feel a little differently about this situation than you do. I’ve always thought of him as a solid and consistent winner and great all around guy, but I wouldn’t categorize him with the truly great QBs of the NFL. IMO, he needs to end his successful career by gracefully riding off into the sunset, but I seriously doubt that he’s going to do this. He’s causing a huge distraction to his team at a time when they’re in the process of trying to move forward and I think that’s pretty chicken shit on Bretts part. He is basically making an ass out of himself.
I still think that they should trade him and get a talented young player that will help them in the future, however, I agree with what you said in your first point. They’ll probably take him back which will no doubt cause a lukewarm QB controversy because there is no way that Rogers will start over Favre in Green Bay the fans would have a coronary if that happened. So if management allows Favre to come back I believe that he’ll be guaranteed the starting job.

And whats up with his fucking name:mad:

Im from wisconsin and a Packers fan. If Favre goes to another team, he's officially a faggot in all Packer fans books. Finish his dynasty for ONE maybe TWO years with another team? A team probably worse off then the Packers so the chance of a Superbowl ring isn't there for Favre, which he stated when he retired "would be the only reason for coming back. Anything less would be a failure".
Favre has been our man since I've been a Packer fan, and we've been to hell and back with him. Favre IS (or I should now say WAS) the Green Bay Packers. When he talks about not being respected by the Packers, wanting to go to another team, and keep whining about it, then he just becomes another one of those dickhole athletes who only cares about HIS fame and HIS money.
Everyone in Wisconsin loves Brett because he gave us that big timeness in a state mostly filled with small towns (and Green Bay being the smallest NFL franchise city), which made us feel noticed, on the map in this game.
Really I think he should have just not retired in the first place, I was 100% hoping for Favre to come back. But now our few minor details we needed to work out last year (that we could have fixed in the draft) were wasted on more QBs and putting us in a tough situation. It's just damn STUPID not to take Favre as well as it is to take him.
If he comes back, he'll start for sure. I guarentee a division win if he's our QB. It's just a matter of performing it right in the playoffs, getting ahead of Dallas (NFC's top threat next year) and finally sticking it to the hot AFC team that makes it (hopefully the Chargers or Jaguars, anyone but the Colts and Patriots).
110% chance of getting in playoffs
98% chance of getting first round bye (Dallas will get the other)
50% chance of getting #1 seed, therefore home field throughout (Again, it's all how we match up with Dallas. Dallas got it by half of a game last year).
80% chance of going to NFC championship again.
If he doesn't.... I'd say at best a 10-6 season with Rodgers starting, providing he is consistent enough to start every game. We had the 2nd best offense in the NFL last year (Favre helped) but the receiving line was a big part of it. Ryan Grant is a major accomplishment in our running game and I'm looking forward to starting a season with him. At worst, meh, a 7-9 season. I can't see the Packers doing horrible next year, we still have a great team besides the QB. We just need one to make it happen when we need to.
90% chance of getting in playoffs.
30% chance of getting first round bye
10% chance of getting #1 seed
25% chance of going to NFC championship

Brett has 2 T's you dumbass. And if they bench him there will be riots. Aaron Rogers sucks I feel bad for him but he is stupid. Why stay with Green Bay if you know Brett is there, that's like a good quaterback being Tom Brady's backup. Aaron Rogers is like a candle in the sun and that sun is Brett Favre

Haha what better way to learn how to be a great NFL quarterback then to study under a certain hall of famer? Sitting under Favre for the past 3 years for sure has nothing but helped Rodgers. Of course I'm sure he's pissed now that Favre wants to come back and delay his start even more.
As for Favre, there's no way in hell the Packers will ever release him. The only way he is going to play for another team is if the Packers work out a trade with another team pretty soon. Of course that won't be with the Bear or Vikings. I highly doubt he will be traded though because in all likely hood he'll only be good for this next season. So that leaves him coming back with the team. The Packers have already stated constantly that they are moving forward and Rodgers is their man and Favre will never settle for being a backup. So it seems like Favre is shit out of luck. I actually hope he decides to just show up at mini camp just to spite the Packers. That would be fantastic. Anyway what I think the Packers should do is let Favre back for just this next season. Let him do his thing and try for the superbowl again. Tell him that no matter what Rodgers will be the man next season. But what I think will actually happen is a last minute trade to some contender. Either way though, the Packers have a much much better chance of winning this season with Favre at quarterback.

Favre is making a complete fool out of himself. It doesn't seem like he cares that he's tarnishing his legacy. The way I see it is that the only one supporting Brett are the die hard BF fans. The rest of us think that he's being an ass and hurting the Packers.

But he's already shown before that he doesn't give a fuck about his legacy, he just wants to play some football. He's never been a "me" player, he always just wants to help the team. You can say he's hurting his team now, which is true in a sense, but you can also say he's trying to help them, since he IS still a better player offering his services to his team than Rodgers, IMO. That will of course remain to be seen.

Eh, I wouldn't say he's tarnishing his legacy. A couple years from now is anyone going to be like remember when Favre retired but then didn't? No they're going to remember everything else about his career. He will forever be associated with the Packers and that's what people will remember. Does anyone associate Montana with the Cheifs or Rice with the Raiders/Seahawks? Nope. He just wants to keep on playing football.

Assuming your first sentence is your opinion, could you tell us why you think Aaron Rodgers is a better quarterback than a three-time MVP who holds all major NFL passing records, a super bowl ring, a consecutive games streak that probly won't be matched until affordable bionics are created, and who is coming off a season in which he completed an amazing 2/3rds of his attempted passes? Is it because he played a halfway decent game in a loss to Dallas? I'll put my money for better helping the team on the guy with 150 wins over the guy without an official start every time.
If by "The Packers" you mean ted thompson, then you're probably right, but he's only one person in a large organization with a few thousand owners who disagree.
In reference to the bold, I hope you meant "before last season began."

Do you really think this is how sports teams are run? That general managers make sweeping decisions effecting the entire history of the franchise against the will of his employers? Really? As fravra own agent said: "Nobody pushed Brett out the door but then nobody encouraged him not to go out that door either. I don't think he had a lot of encouragement to stay, but nobody told him to leave either." That would be agent-bullshit for: 'they told us to fuck off'.
Remember, I'm just looking at this from packers management perspective. They're the ones who pushed him out the door and don't want him back. rodgers isn't a better quarterback than farva, he just gives a young team a fresh start. favrr has been killing green bay with interceptions for years, and there's tons of smart packers fans who have wanted him gone the past couple seasons so the team could build around it's defense and receiving core. Also, bret's consecutive games streak isn't so impressive since he only got it by swallowing fistfuls of pills everyday.
As long as peyton manning stays healthy then he'll be able to break favres starting record.

I'm pretty sure you can equate "General Manager" with "Packers Management" since the former is in charge of the latter, so we don't disagree there. However, they had their defense and receiving corps on the threshold last year, and a 38 year old guy was able to take them to the conf. champ. game. You can say his pick in that game killed them, but the rest of the year was one of his best in terms of not giving up the important interception (besides that game, the first game against the Bears was probably the only other one). This leads me to believe he is/was still in a playing form that could allow him to play effectively for the next few years.
And you made some pretty good points in this thread, up until your last sentence, which tore down everything you said and makes you look pretty idiotic.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL LLLLLLLLLLLLLL. You are not an educated person. At least not about the Green Bay Packers.
The Packers are owned by shareholders who bought stock during public sales, most recently in the later 90's. Since there are so many owners, a board of directors is elected every couple of years. I'm pretty sure the next election is in 2012.

I do respect Favre, he was on my team for so many years. I dont even remember the Packers without Favre, but I'm a Packers fan first and not a players fan. And as a packers fan, I say FUCK FAVRE because he's a whiny little bitch. His legacy is tarnished in my opinion. Sure history will remember him as a Packer but as of right now I'd say 90% of WIsconsin thinks he's a little bitch traitor. Dont care if it wasn't his fault, decision, etc. He should have stayed retired and I agree 100% with Ted Thompson and the Packers organization for the decisions theyve made.
Ill admit the Vikings are a good team and are going to be our top competitor for the NFC North title, but I think our #2 NFL offense from last year and our superb defense will prevail. Rodgers is no Favre obviously but he's what the Packer's need and played well enough for my standards in the pre-season. Sure Favre contributed to us having the #2 offense last year but is a 13-3 team going to fall that hard? I don't think so (Because we're not the Bears). In all honesty, with our schedule this year, I'm predicting a 10-6 season. At worst, 8-8, and at best, 11-5.
It's all up in the air though. The bears ALWAYS give the Packers a run for their money both times they play (not that I'm worried theyll win the division, they just always seem to play a good game against us), and we have some hard games, primarily against the Colts, Jags, and Cowboys.
Safe to say that the winner of week 1 will take the NFC North title? I'd say so. IM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL

I agreed with the rest of your post, but you're drinking the kool-aid here. If the packers really wanted him back, they would have found SOME way to get him to stay; its safe to say it would have been much easier for the favres to stay in green bay than pack for new york.
A player who thinks he can still play (and who proved that today) has every right in the world to attempt a comeback, its just a question of if he can actually physically handle it. There were TV cameras at that Mississippi HS Brett was throwing at that made it obvious he had been working out for some time. Even Reggie White retired and then came back. Nobody was up in arms about that.
I myself am rather indifferent to the situation in terms of siding with Brett or TT and the org, but if you're agreeing 100% with Ted, you're by extension siding with the selfishness he blatantly is showing by allowing a 3-time MVP who would give them the better chance to win to be traded away in favor of a pretty promising backup who has never started and might have a chin made of glass that he drafted when he first came in.
I also don't think there's necessarily anything terribly wrong with him wanting his guy to play, but there is so obviously a second side to this issue that you don't appear to question at all. But at least you do admit you are a fan of the team first, which makes your point of view understandable.
I, on the other hand, have decided that I am just about equally a fan of Brett Favre as I am of the Packers. I just can't discount the huge number of transcendent moments he has been involved in through his football career. If a 3-time MVP and holder of all major records at his position wants to play, you give him a chance. I also recognize he put TT in a terrible position, which is his (Brett's) own fault by deciding to come back so late. However, he is the best in NFL history in terms of stats, and I would tend to give a player like that the benefit of the doubt in a situation like that, even if it made me look like a total asshole to the kid I drafted and gave the starting job to.
So to make a long story short, I place the blame equally on each party's shoulders, and am as such now a Jets offense fan and a Packers fan, but I hope to high heaven they don't meet in the Super Bowl.
