Well, it's summer vacation right now, and I'm already anticipating next years classes. I will be a senior and want to really impress my teachers. I've already talked with my AP Chem teacher, and he has said that will let us do any lab exercise we wish, as long as it meets some requirements
Does not involve carcinogenic substances
No use of "drugs" in any chemical reaction, as either reactants or products
Must be educational and demonstrable(sp?) in a classroom environment(no exotic glassware, etc.)
I'm wondering what would fall into these categories that would still be cool. I'd love to try and make precursors to some fun substances, but I'm open to any ideas that you guys have.
I never got to do anything like that, but if you are looking for the subtle drug route, search through lab tips. a thread on this topic is usually made every six months.
im planning on taking AP chem and bio
good luck, heh, im quite excited myself, other subjects i dont care for as much
science is my thing
When I was in AP chem my teacher said he was going to have us make aspirin from scratch(well as close to scratch as can be anticipated in a high school chemistry class) because he said its challenging but not overly difficult or time-consuming and is also a fun lab to do. We never got to do it because we ran out of time, so I can't say how interesting it really is, but you could ask your teacher about that.

thanks danreil, i was thinking about doing that. He'd probably be O.K. with that, he just doesn't want us to be synthesizing psychoactive drugs.
Science is my thing, too. last year, chemistry just kind of clicked with me. More so than any other class i had taken.
on a side note, if I have a place to ship things, what fun chemicals should I look at acquiring?

Lucky bastard, for science class I have to copy crap from a book.

Tell me about it.
The labs at my high school were under renovation the entire 4 years. So we had to take chemistry and physics in the auxiliary gym where all we did was boring lecture after boring lecture.

That was my high school year of chemistry :)
As cool start-up experiments check out:
Elephant Toothpaste
Molten Potassium Chlorate + Sugar (gummy bear)
Boric Acid + Methanol (green flame)
Thermite
Coloured Fuel mixes (in the test tubes at the end it's potassium chlorate and sugar + metal ions)
Nitrocellulose

the science of oxidizers :D
I took AP Phys.
5 bitches.
It is a pretty easy course for anyone interested in anything mechanical.
Some parts are abstract and difficult to understand (B/E Fields), but you can do it.
There are a number of neat tricks, usually used by chemistry professors at open days to interest prospective students. Things that change colour. For example one involves a substance that changes from a dark blue to yellow periodically upon vigorous mixing for quite a few minutes.
Or you could do some fractional distillations. That's always fun.

5 here too :)
But the E&M was so... beautiful...
No worrying about collision stuff, just a few vectors.

I have a few favorite demonstrative experiments for AP Chem:
Atomic structure: Paramagnetism of Liquid Oxygen, flame tests on metal salts
Bonding: KBr vs. p-Dichlorobenzene properties
Phase changes: Water in a vacuum chamber, dry ice production (if you have a tank of CO2)
Thermodynamics: potassium chloride for endothermic, thermite for exothermic
Solutions: Ice 9 (supersaturated sodium acetate solution)
Equilibrium/Acids and Bases: Chromate/Dichromate ion equilibrium, Barium Chromate saturated solution equilibrium
Electrochemistry: Electrolysis of water, recombination in a fuel cell, look at cutting edge research by Dr. Nocera at MIT in Science August 01 issue.
Nuclear chemistry: Spinthariscope (check United Nuclear)
Organic Chem: Make wine
If you want the lab handouts, just flip me an email.

soulsname, could you send those handouts to tingtonger at gmail dot com?

does AP physics cover electrodynamics and Maxwell's equations?
