View Full Version : Working with nylon tights
Okay, I know it's a longshot asking for actual sewing advice on totse but it's worth a shot.
Alright, so I've got a pair of really rad cheetah print tights. The only problem is that the legs are a little short and the crotch is too low. I've worn them a few times but spent the entire evening reaching down my skirt to hike my tights up, not so sexy.
So here is what I want to do with them. I just want to cut the legs off and hem the top somehow so I can just wear them with a garter that I already have. Basically, I just need to chop the legs off and hem the top. Which would be an easy task if it wasn't this shit.
I really don't know much about working with this type of material other then if I were to cut it it would just fray like mad. I have no idea how I would even go about sewing it.
So any ideas? Someone suggested I go around the top where I was going to cut with fabric glue, then cut it to stop it from fraying. She wasn't sure if this would even work though.
And I'm going to try any suggestions on another pair first before I mangle my slightly expensive cool ones.

were gonna need pics with them on and off for comparison purposes.
I can't tell if you actually want to see them or you're just being a creep, but

Almost exactly like these. But if I were to wear that skirt with it the crotch would be hanging out. Not my crotch, the ones in the tights.

Tsk, there was no need to crush the mental image I'd formed.
Nylon or cotton will usually fray no matter how neat the cut, unless you fold the material over at the ends and then stitch through the folded layer (apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs). But I don't know how the end result would look with tights - that would depend on your cutting and stitching skills.

Im not expert, but it seems this would be quite hard to accomplish.
Nylon is a pretty horrible material to work with, as its very easy to destory its, eh, neathness. But i guess the glue thing is feasible if you can get the prober glue.
I believe they sell anti-fraying glue type stuff at most fabric and craft stores.
Although, if you're broke I've heard a rumor that clear nail polish works. You might want to google that; as I'm too lazy to do it.
They're going to fray like crazy, and get all rolled up/bunchy around where you cut them. Try wearing a pair of underwear on top of them. Yes it sounds strange/uncomfortable, but (in my limited experience with tights) it works.

Nail polish works on small frays, but if I were to go around the whole outside edge with it it wouldn't stretch and I wouldn't be able to fit my leg in. Same with the glue I think.
Maybe if I put them on then painted them so they just stay the right size... hmmm, this will take some experimenting.
As for the underwear idea, I think they would just pull them down. The legs are quite a bit too short.

yeah I cant see it working to be honest.
Just cut the feet off and wear them with boots/as footless tights?

Wow. Why didn't I think of just cutting the feet off?
too late now I guess haah. I chopped the legs of and they didn't fray at all. They just roll up at the top. I might do a zig-zag stitch around the top just to be sure, but it looks like it'll work fine.

Just cut the feet off and wear them [...] as footless tights?
holy fucking shit. That's the most atrocious thing i've ever heard.

nice job, but

^ this.
Alright, well, I just hacked the legs off and they worked fine. I wore them all night doing various activities which I would have expected would fray them, I even slept in them. But they were fine.
Here's the only picture I could find of me wearing them, before I cut the legs off. You can't tell how ill fitting they are there though.

Slice em up.
More holes the better.
:)
I did know this trick to create more crotch space because as a boy wearing tights it's hard to get enough "space" but i've forgotten it now.
It was something like making small cuts around the thighs or something.
