View Full Version : To have a car or not to have a car at college

So this coming semester I'm forced with a difficult decision: should I have a car? It would make a handful of tasks throughout the year much easier, like getting groceries. But, the cost is massive. Insurance+car payments to the folks (who own the car) for the year is 1800. Though at the same time I counted at least three times last year where having a car would push me in the direction of getting laid.

So help me &T, should I take my car next term to college?

Personally, I wouldn't take it if I were you.

$1800 for a college student is a lot of money. Then you have to add in for gas and a parking permit if you are required to have one. It all depends on your priorities.

If you live off campus then yes, if you live on, then no.

But thats just my opinion. :)

Cars give you so much freedom. Like, need Jack in the Box? Or shit like that. Yea mane.

I wouldn't. I don't know anyone who lives on campus and brings their car with them.

Getting laid three time divided by eighteen hundred dollars equals 600 dollars per poon. Is that worth to you?

Unless you will be going to a city that has a decent public transit system, take your car. It would be a pain in the ass to find people to take you everywhere you needed to go. Get a job and pay for the car.

Where do you plan on going? All your friends will be on campus, and in most cases stores and bars are walking distance.

Nah. Bicycle is a better option.

Car:

Major cost/liability
People bum rides off you

But when they bum just drive your ass to a gas station and say, chip in for gas, everybody.

Also realize that the price of gas will keep going up and you still have to factor in maintenence cost for the vehicle as shit can and will break.

If you can reasonably get by without a vehicle, then don't get one.

Buy a fuckin scooter or moped.

Paying payments to the owners?

Just buy some cheap car for like 600 or so.

Still, Moped.

You'd look way more badass. And chicks could grind your ass and rub their tits in your back.

I think this is more likely on a motorcycle. Mopeds are cool and efficient and all, but they're a little dorky looking. Not useful for picking up chicks.

You never look at a moped the same way after you spend 5 months in Cali....

I lived in a big city going to college, Milwaukee to be exact. If you live on campus, having a car isn't necessary at all. Some of the richer kids payed the $500 for a parking permit for the whole year, but it's just not required really. Sure it makes groceries and shit like that a hell of a lot easier (especially in our cold ass Wisconsin winters) but we have a decent enough public transportation where you could get around it.

Since 90% of people living on campus won't have a car either, then you not having a car doesn't really make you a loser at all. You still walk to class/parties and what not, and in college areas, most of what you need is only a few blocks away anyways. Cars are really only for if your hometown is far away and need a vehicle to get home on certain occasions, or if you commute to school.

Since I have a car, if I was moving back to Milwaukee (which I'm not... changing schools fyi) I would take my car with me since I would have lived off campus. Just to have it sit in my driveway though in case of things like groceries etc. I would most likely walk though just like everyone else for any other reason.

If you didn't have payments to make, I'd suggest bringing it just to have in case you ever needed it. Butttt you'll realize how crucial money is your first year of college. I'd advise against it.

lol sure....:D

Can't you walk across Milwaukee (city's around the same size as Memphis IIRC and I remember in Memphis able to drive from the rural areas to the city center in 5 minutes or less. LOL I was surprised as fuck.

Also, unless you have to commute to college (like me soon :( ) you won't have to and shouldn't get a car. Yeah get a fucking Moped as others said!

Walking across Milwaukee would take forever... yeah it's no Chicago but it's still big, like the 19th biggest city. Like 1.5mil for the metro area.

hmm. okay. Living in Chicago my whole life it is scary to see people able to drive through a city in 5 minutes and it's considered a "big city"

There's no way in HELL you could drive through Milwaukee in 5 minutes... you have a poor perspective of how big Milwaukee is.

from one side of the city to the other in a car or something takes longer? shit, haven't been there in 10 years or more so i dunno. I remember going from the rural area to the city center of Memphis in 5 minutes once so//

The following cities are smaller then Milwaukee, WI:

Boston
Seattle
Nashville
Denver
D.C.
Las Vegas
Louisville
Portland
Oklahoma City
Tucson
Atlanta
Albuquerque
Fresno
Long Beach
Sacramento
Mesa
Kansas City
Cleveland
Virginia Beach
Omaha
Miami
Oakland
Tulsa
Minneapolis
Colorado Springs
Raleigh
Honolulu
Arlington
Wichita
St. Louis

In order from largest to smallest. Once again, Milwaukee is more populous then all of those cities

nah i wouldn't bring a car. i go to a big university in a big city and everything i need is generally in walking distance. whatever isn't, you take the city bus. it's free to students which is nice. maybe your school has something like that as well.

I didn't bring a car to school my freshman year and it worked out fine because I knew people that had cars on campus. I'm living on campus this year, but I'm bring my car because I have more money and it's convenient. My car gets 30+ miles per gallon so gas prices don't hurt me as much as others. If you afford to have a car on campus then get one, but if it's really going to hurt your wallet I probably wouldn't.

I've got a truck, but I prefer to use public transportation. In my city, students get public transportation for a pittance of $80 a semester; the fee is included in my tuition.

Gas is expensive and using public transportation is often more convenient; not having to find a place to park is always priceless.

Fresno

Fresno is huge in terms of taking forever to go from one end to the other, but there is a lot of empty space to the south-west or North East parts. the majority is residential. we have Downtown which is just a bunch of run-down shit, it's dead unless you work for the county in one of their buildings.

I'd say it depends where you go. If it's a traditional campus college far away from civilization (much like the ones here in Illinois) I'd say no. A ton of my friends are going to Eastern, Western, etc. and most didn't bring their cars because the towns aren't that big that they'd need one. I'm going to UIC this semester and while I got buses and trains and my place is 3 blocks from the school I still took my car. Just felt it was easier to go back and visit my family in the suburbs or out on the weekends ya know.

2 factors to think of:

Proximity to the school/Market/Other places

What city/how good the public transportation is
