View Full Version : I will be gone to a Christian camp for a week. God help me.
I will be going to this Christian summer camp for a week starting Sunday. This is apparently a place to discuss and reflect on God.
The point is I got kicked out of their "creationist science" class a few years ago for arguing with the "teacher" about natural selection and carbon dating, and later their Bible study class for pointing out Bible verses encouraging slavery, male domination, and other things modern Christians like to pretend aren't in there.
I also made a few people upset when I encouraged other campers to read books I had brought (The Art of War, Reefer Madness, 1984, ect.) Apparently, Harry Potter is ok but a copy of the Qur’an is not.
I believe in God, but not in the people who believe in God, because every last one of them (including me) lose their "morals" and "ideas" when they think no one is looking. I do not believe in the church and basically have not found one that is not corrupt in some way.
But I am back at this camp at 18 years old (because people at my current church are paying me to watch the kids that are going) and I will have the same problems of pointing out hypocrisy and flaws in fundamentalism and strict traditionalism without proper context of the word.
I need to find a way to relate my ideas of modern corruption and hypocrisy of tradition of the word but without enraging the people of the camp. My goal is to educate, not to criticize(intentionally). Mostly I remind people of the few important verses of hypocrisy and verses of the right to question faith:
Jeremiah 8,8 "How can you say /we are wise because we have the word of the Lord./ when your teachers have twisted it so badly?"
1 Thess. 5: 21"Test everything"

I find it really difficult myself to argue with creationists. I'll explain all kinds of things just like what you have said. They just deny it. It seems you can throw amountless piles of evidence in there face and they will still ignore it. I may not be very good at explaining things put I do make some good points.
I just conclude that some people can never be reasoned with. They permenetly lack individiual thought and critical thinking. severely deluded. As for kids though, they can be highly influence of course. It's hard to teach without criticizing ones beliefs. Just make those kids shut the fuck up and let them ask questions when your done talking. You may help them question there own beliefs. It's good to do that to someone at a young age. They tend to be less stubborn.
See I brought up carbon dating and relative age through examining isotopes and the damn teacher said "theres no proof that any of that is fact"
All I could say was "what?"

I know dude. It's quite scary. I would have no idea what to say to that.
She might change her mind after actually seeing the proof.
People are crazy.

So do the job you're being paid to do, babysitting, instead of trying to elevate your status to something its not.

You're setting yourself up for failure, because this is not your job. If they wanted you to educate their kids, you'd be a youth leader or wtf'ever they are now. Or is that what you *really* are, with it being a cover for your true beliefs?

Please, why do you think they asked him to do it.
They knew what they were getting when they asked such an outspoken person to babysit, and if they did not, perhaps they should continue to pray for wisdom.

Let us know how it went.

It's summer camp! Most of the kids probably won't even want to be there, so make it fun for them and don't spend the entire time trying to educate them. Take them fishing, swimming, hiking, canoeing, spelunking and save them from the utter hell that is church camp. Give 'em a break from the bullshit and just let them be kids.

I went to Presbyteriam church camp twice, and All I remember (besides being grossed out from the lip marks on the communion cup) was hooking up with this gorgeous rich girl from Connecticut. It was an epihany--a cute girl could actually like me.
Who knew?
I second AFs advice--just have fun. Religious folk usually have their minds made up and do not wish to be confused with facts.
