I was reading about these anonymous guys, sounds like a totse on roids. Hacking scientology sites, then by night wearing drama masks and vandalizing, calling bomb threats(including olympics), telephone harassment and tons of hate mail. So is this a technological holy war? youtube has a bunch of videos on this
Is the 'anonymous website' that fox news is always talking about actually 4chan?

You know, I think it's a bit gutless to protest something you're passionately against while hiding behind anonymity and masquerading as evil internet characters. They should show their face, put their neck on the line. Then I might be in awe of how something so ridiculous warrants pulling together the loose organization and vigilantism these folks did. At this rate, they're only getting mild internet lulz and the growing concern and sympathy from the other half who are soon going to band together to "protect and preserve and recognize" $cientology as a religion.

lol, $cientology isn't a religion it's a scam.
Also anonymous doesn't do the protests and the ddos for any religious reasons. They sought to protect the internet from opression of freedom of speech.
Also, 5 minutes of googling will show you what $cientology really is.

Cultish aspects aside, the few actual tenets of scientology I've seen seem reasonable enough, but their terminology is off-putting, I think.

Actually I have noticed this as well. I accidentally stumbled upon a website that was buddhist/scientologist related and I decided to read it with an open mind. Some of the ideas behind it just seem like rehashings of buddhism/mysticism/gnosticism/etc.

you obviously havent heard about our souls geting trapped in volcanos and all the other rediculous bullshit there former science fiction novelist leader wrote, oh but i guess youd have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars too here it.
and anonymous doing protests and shit is pretty gay in my opinion, its 1 thing to go out and fucking peel out on l ron hubbards boulevard, but quite another to go in front of a scientology church and wear a guy fawkes mask while blasting never gonna give you up and screaming memes with your dorky friends

i obviously haven't read what your talking about, but to me that just kind of seems to say how easy it is to take a lot of these "new age" spirituality ideas, get some plublicity behind it (like some celebrity practitioners perhaps), a spin it into a fad that you can make money off of. same thing with kaballah, take hasidic jewish mysticism/numerology from around the 11th. century, add some madonna and a "celebrity center" in malibu or whatever the fuck and you have a shitty red that you can sell to pre-teen girls for $15 a pop.
i'm not trying to discredit the ideas of mysticism and gnosticism etc. i think that a lot of them are personally really great, but its worth understanding their roots and how they fit in *gasp* mainstream religiosity before devoting yourself to scientology or some other "buffet-style" religious group if your serious about spirituality.

Well I certainly agree. I like the ideas behind gnosticism, buddhism, etc, but I think one should be wary of anyone trying to sell you something or to get you to join a cult. Enlightenment is a personal thing, it isn't something you buy in a store.
&TOTSE > *CHAN.
That being said, Scientology is b-b-b-b-b-bullshit.

Wow dude shut the fuck up. Scientology has just as much of a right to be called a religion as Christianity or any other faith. They all accept cash from their people.
You just don't want to recognize it because it isn't thousands of years old and millions of people don't believe in it.

Everyone should realize that what is under attack is not so much the beliefs of Scientology, even though they are incredibly ridiculous, but the "church" itself, which is a violent pyramid scheme (pyramid schemes are illegal, for those not in the know) that has ruined many lives. To reiterate, almost all of the well known critics, such as Andreas Heldal-Lund, could care less if people believe in aliens, they just want a corporation that has committed many illegal acts to be shut down by the authorities. This is effectively what I want too.

calling bomb threats(including olympics), telephone harassment and tons of hate mail.
I'm betting the bomb threats were actually called in by Scientologists trying to make them look bad! Anyway, there's a good article at Radar magazine (http://radaronline.com/from-the-magazine/2008/03/scientology_anonymous_protests_tom_cruise_01.php) that I read a few days ago about this.

Why won't you realise it's just a money making scam?

I don't see Scientology doing anything that hasn't been done before...
Ifanything, they are just theists with fancy ass gadgetry, other than that they are doing all the cliche religion/cult actions.

For these Anon people to ape V is puerile and pathetic. If they were doing anything remotely worthwhile--like hacking the NSA comps that review our email, or getting Mugabe out of power, or helping the people in Darfur, or just working in a soup kitchen in America, I could admire them.
As it is, they are just a bunch of snarky kids with way too much spare time.

Imagine masked faggots working in soup kitchens.
The entire thing is completely asinine. They have and will solve nothing doing what they are doing. The fact that they wear masks shines even more light on how pointless they even find this protest. If they truly believed in their cause they would go out and show their faces. Anyone who takes this protest seriously is a fool.

Anonymity is a great thing, and is really the only way to effect true change. Totse is a great example. I can't say anything here without it being compared to everything else I've ever said in the past, thanks to my name. The same goes for everyone else. I could say something completely idiotic and have it taken seriously, and an idiot could say something completely sage and be ignored. Anonymity is the natural progression of cyberspace: Read the Hacker's Manifesto for more on that.
Also, given the shit scientology has done, I'm not surprised they're trying to stay anonymous. CoS has already tried to ruin the lives of the few they've unmasked.
On Scientology as a religion: Read some of the leaked documents, you can get them on TPB or wikileaks. All of the introductory shit is quite rational. However, I have read PDF's of scanned L. Ron Hubbard documents that are just utter scifi. It isn't a religion, it's a fiction author's mythos somehow seeping into reality. It's like if everyone who liked Tolkien started praying to the west every night.
Scientology is just as much of a religion as any other, though. They're just scamming you out of money instead of doing what the christians (for instance) do and scamming you out of your mind and your voice. Anonymous should have attacked all religions, not just scientology, but even for all the criticism against them, they did a pretty decent job. Scientology is on the german "Bureau of Protection of the Constitution" list of threats to the german constitution, even: "Right Wing Radicals, Left Wing Radicals, Foreign Radicals, Islamist Radicals, and Scientology Organization"[source (http://www.verfassungsschutz.de/en/en_fields_of_work/)], and didn't Texas take away their tax status?
Personally, I think this is a great moment in the history of the internet and of humanity. A ton of people, without regard to their individual fame or fortune, organized in a fully decentralized way over the internet, and did a lot of damage to an international corporation. Imagine what will happen when this generation grows up.
Scientologists are fools.
But that doesn't mean this other group is the bee's knees.
I think their are much bigger problems in the world their efforts could have gone towards resolving, then putting Scientology under pressure.

But this is 4chan. All they are good at is" Photoshop Friday "-like images/memes.
Don't base all of your knowledge on Scientology on the southpark episode, although the facts are all put across properly it's obviously made in a comical way. Scientology is no more a scam or a lie than any of the other religions, it's peoples personal belief and they should be allowed to get on with it.
The Church of Scientology however is a different matter. Most of the members of the church have no idea what is going on, and they have simply been brainwashed but the higher up's are some of the most evil people on the planet, there are a lot of widely known (And denied by COS) atrocities committed by the 'church' and they are the best at what they do, I wonder how many other people have been killed or exploited that never make it to the media.
My prediction is that fighting COS is simply going to be the beginning for Anon, once Anon drop the childish language and actions (And most never will) They will be a force on the internet, anonymous vigilantes who stand up to bullies like church of scientology.

But the thing about them is that they were able to mobilize others. I have a friend who's always on Digg who told me that "anonymous is basically a lot of pissed off diggers". There are others who came onto the forums they set up specifically to fight CoS.
The important part isn't anonymous or CoS. The important part is the organization of _people_ against a monolith like CoS. If people are made aware of their inherent power, and network to harness that power, then the current power structures will shudder in fear.
Exactly, it's pretty rare for internet folks to actually go out and do something in the real world.

I don't see why so many have an issue with Scientology; just because Hubbard created the Church for a tax write off, does not make it any less practical. Realize that it is not a religion but a Philosophy, the religion was added for tax purposes.

Practical? Scientology? It's a series of brainwashing techniques designed to effect control over you and extract as much of your funds for the organization to use as possible. Leaked "secret" documents (which Scientology has since tried to have quashed under copyright infringement, leading credibility to these documents' reality) make that much pretty clear.
Scientology is religion boiled down to it's base components, a stripped down utilitarian scheme to get as much as possible out of it's supporters for as little effort spent as possible.

QFT. This guy is exactly right!
Sure you can describe anon as a bunch of dorky teens in masks, but you're missing the point. The whole proof that every day people can mobilise themselves and become powerful activists all through the medium of the internet.

This sounds like a judgement to me.
Fact is, these kids have united to fight against an oppresive corporation, that has ruined lives, and stolen millions.
Feeding junkie bums tomato soup on sundays...just doesn't seem as worthwhile.
