But I believe this is the only direction we humans can take. Sometime, whether its now, 100 years, 10,000 years in the future we must created something more than us. The human brain is nothing more than an incredibly complex machine that receives sensory information from several inputs, uses it in conjunction with stored information, processes it according to a ridiculous amount of interrelated rules learnt over a lifetime and outputs the results in a myriad of ways, both internal and external. The principle is that of a computer.

If an exact replica of a human brain could be built (and there's no reason it couldn't, given sufficient miniaturisation; we know the structure and we know the mechanisms) that functioned in the exact same way as our brains and was given twenty years of experience with the world, what possible argument could you have for that replica not being sentient?
