View Full Version : loud noises and ear protection... a thread of lulzy experiments and absentmindedness

so normally I ALWAYS use ear protection, even when using something as simple as a fountain.

but today...NOOOOOOOOOO I had to be a jackass and learn EXACTLY what it feels like to go deaf for two minutes after wanting to see EXACTLY how much shock is needed for dusting sulfur and chlorate to detonate...

in all my haste making the contraption and setting up ALL MY OTHER safety equipment...I FORGOT my fucking earplugs!

FUCK!

so...with 1 GRAM of this suicide mix I drop the weight and BOOM my eardrums crinkle and a ring like a 1000 capacitors overcharging coursing through my brain.

I'm fine though... i was in my ENCLOSED garage

note to self...you're a fucking idiot.

Congratulations, you're fucking retarded.

Care to tell us why you had to make a thread about it? Or were you just looking for attention, no matter whether it was positive or negative?

mostly to generate some activity here...while it has somewhat picked up as of the reopening of registration...It could use some more.

and no...I didn't post for attention, why would I come to the internet for that?

Always wear proper protection.

Edit: also, in hindsight it WAS kinda funny that I would spend several hours setting up stuff and making a drop test rig to forget basic safety equipment.

You find it funny that you were grossly incompetent which lead to you doing much more injury to yourself than you seem to realize? People like you give this hobby its bad name.

Take care of your hearing and eyes, you don't realize how much you rely on them until they're gone.

Take is easy vineman. Other than flames I haven't seen any really top notch contribution from your ass in a while. The same can be said for me, but I havent had time, I'm getting deployed overseas soon so I've been getting ready for that.

OP: I hope your ears are okay. I had a bad experience forgetting earplugs once, not with pyro, but with a .375 H&H Magnum shooting from the cover of a tin shed...

Damn, that sounds like some permanent hearing damage for sure.

Well few back in the days... when I was testing... ap, mekp, petn, etn, ddnp, and silver ds... with a hammer... in really small ammounts, however first few tries were indoors :( motivated me to make a drop rig with a really long cord :)

take it easy guys everyone does make mistakes and shit does happen this is why they are called accidents by him posting it hear it serves not only the old members but the new ones as well as a reminder

i myself have permanant ear damage due to a explostion

anyone care to call me a incompatent retarded n00b ?

fact of the matter is i made a very foolish mistake that could have potentially been alot worse and now i have to pay for it for the rest of my life

In this hobby, you rarely make mistakes and NOT realize you were being a jackass.

but now for the real question:
How much of an impact did it make? I wonder if this could be used for primers/percussion caps.

agreed generally your first mistake is your last mistake but they are also mistakes shit does happen just try and minimize them

And this noob has shrapnel in his palm from a stupid mistake involving APPN.

And honestly, I've NEVER used ear plugs, and only recently has it started to really bother me, like, firing guns and stuff is a bit much these days, I feel old. Years ago when I was into pyro hardcore I never once used ear plugs, but then again I never did tests inside either.

I don't think you could render it safe enough to use as a percussion cap without some serious effort.

like inert gas manufacturing environment, serious milling, dehydration, packing

and you will need a metal powder to mix in it or you'll get no flame, just gas and solids...not even warm gas and solids, tried it again today (with earplugs :D ) and the weight was not even warm after.

Fucked my ears again with guns. This time an F88 Austeyr. One earplug fell out three shots into a 30 rounds serial :( hipside double tap -> aimed shot. The cunt is still ringing.

I never used ear plugs when I was full in to pyro. Dozens of times it took more than a day for the ringing to stop. 15g APPN? 10 feet. 1g AP cap? 2 feet. Hammer test? .3 grams.

Never got any serious burns but plenty of sparks off fuses and such. Once got Al foil bits embedded in the side of my finger when I held a lighter to a packet of AP. That looked sick.

My advice for noobs: eye and ear protection at all times. Gloves would be nice too.

My freind did the same thing, he was experimenting with chlorate/sulfur mix, so he melted a heavy lead weight on a brass tube with a streamer so it would always fall on its tip, and attached a bag of the mixture to the tip, then the he threw the rod, and of course it came down a couple of feet away from him. He said his hearing was fucked for a few hours.
