so law seems to be a prospective university degree for me,

although it requires a UAI (university admissions index) of 99.3% for the university that i want.

anyone doing law?

im in australia, and i was thinking how hard it would be to land a job in new york? i heard their rates are very high (130 000 ) starting salary, whereas here it's only 50-70k.

also, im unsure of what i want to do after law.

i like they money..
but i don't want to be one of those lawyers in the city that are still at work at midnight.
craving on coffee, working 60/80 hour weeks.

i was thinking of joining the australian federal police, and doing their graduate program, or applying to be an australian federal agent.

they earn a fair bit, (50k starting salary), and have alot of other bonuses.

* 6 weeks (30 days) paid recreation leave per year (with options to purchase additional leave or cash out leave)
* 4 mandatory rest days per year
* 18 days paid personal leave per year
* 14 weeks paid maternity leave (after 12 months of service) for each confinement, and an additional 40 weeks maternity leave without pay
* 3 months (or 6 months on half pay) paid long service leave after 10 years’ continuous Commonwealth service
* 6 weeks paid adoption leave
* 2 days of compassionate leave in the case of illness, injury or death of an employee’s immediate family or a member of the employee’s household.

there;s alot of room to advance there as well.
and i am almost certain i will rise through the ranks (unless i become a corrupt cop and land in jail).

the average salary of lawyers in australia are only about 80k, with 100k only being to those with masters, or are good barristars.

so how does the AFP compare to your countries policing/FBI/CIA?

New York lawyers starting salaries might be higher than in Australia, but the cost of living is so fucking ridiculous in NY so I would saying moving there wouldn't be worth it. Can't really offer any advice on the rest of your post.

ah.
i was thinking about that.

the average price for an small apartment is a million dollars,
parking spaces often cost more than renting apartnments in other cities.

ive got a few friends doing law at sydney uni and UNSW (combined with commerce).

Law is a pretty versatile degree to do. though i do think people who come straight out of university would have a boring job for a few years, even in the field of federal policing.

but you can also work in many industries as a legal consultant, depending on your major

i like law, but its not something i'd want to do for a life time.
it's too mundane.

average salary is only about 50-70k, and if your good 100k.
and if your a bar, you can get like 7k a day.
but you work 80-100 hours a week.

whereas federal police salaries start from 53k,
(although for first year you'll be doing shitty work ie. traffic, patrol, etc).

and you get all the bonus'.

i was thinking of working my way up to commissioner.

the australian federal police are the 'state' police of canberra.

the academy is in canberra.

so i guess you do general duties in canberra,
untill your probation period is over, then you get to specialize.
