and if you didn't you wouldn't receive any of the "benefits" of paying taxes. If your house is on fire you can't call the fire department, if you get robbed you can't call the police and if you live in canada you can't go to a hospital.

So you'd be exempt from public services and records. I for one would take this option in a second. I pay little on the way of taxes anyway the majority of my taxes coming off a paycheck and cigarettes. I believe my money is mine alone and a situation is rarely too grave to need assistance from public servants.

how about you folks?

totse isn't the best place to ask this because not many people on totse have kids...Your missing the largest benefit of all, public schools.

public schools are grossly underfunded. If you kept all your tax money you could send your kid to a private school which is a tax exemption anyway.

personally if I had a kid I'd want them to go to public school though.

many public schools in canada are P3, built by companies then leased to the city

I would pay taxes for the benefits. Police department, fire department, education, a military to keep people from invading the country are all nice things to have that I don;t mind taxpayer money going to, but what pisses me the fuck off is when liberals spend taxpayer money on wasteful government projects. Things like universal health care piss me off, and welfare abuse. However, for the most part I believe taxes are a necessary evil.

Can we choose to pay partial taxes? I would pay for some services/departments, but not for others.

I would not pay it.

I would probably say to myself "someone else will".

Everyone would do this.......we would not have a military and would be speaking chinese in a few short years.

------

Ideally, citizens should have more of a choice on where their taxes go.

If I had a choice...a few things that would go unfunded by me...

Welfare
CIA
FBI
ATF
NSA
DHS
Social Security

I think we would be fine in terms of protection from other countries, we can still assemble, we just wouldn't have a standing army...Also you forgot the DEA...And is paying for social security bad? I mean doesn't that money that you pay now come back to you older when you need it more and when it isn't available? I think social security may need to be reformed, but not abolished. Agreed on everything else though.

If given the choice I would pay taxes

IF

I could choose what I wanted my money to go to. Therefore I could support the things I like that the gov does (public services) and I could avoid paying for things I don't like (foreign aid for countries like Israel, military funding, etc)

No.

Decent private school is in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Also, you couldn't use the roads, or sidewalks. You'd starve to death.

Imagine if when your house caught fire you had a choice of fire departments. If your rich you could pay for a quick response and 9 trucks with 30 guys. They would have your house out in no time. If your saving your money for a new kidney though, then you could pay for the cheaper guys who take 30 - 45 minutes and only have buckets of water they fill up at the house next door.

It's so trendy to shit on aid to the poor. Calling it welfare makes it even easier. Aid to the poor is a crime deterrent(give a nigger an apple and he wont steal your apple and you wont have to pay to have him locked up for stealing an apple from you. *) and it expires after X number of years anyways. Also, if you cut aid to the poor spending it would free up a whopping 1% of our budget.

*As for the ethics of appeasement, the bell curve is built into humanity. Even if you put every welfare qualifier in a gas chamber, new people would fill the void, so instead of treating welfare like armed redistribution of hard-earned wealth, it should be thought of as preventative societal maintenance.

What would the business model be like for privatized firefighters? Are there enough fires to keep them busy and can they keep prices affordable while covering running costs? Doubt it. As far as I know back when new york city had private fire companies they were pretty fail, and it was also in their best interest for fires to actually happen, which just opens up another can of worms. Right now private firefighting contractors exist, but they are subsidized by local governments. How that is any better than taxes I don't know.

The money i pay on taxes far outweighs the cost it costs per head in the country for everything, if i had the choice, i'd never pay taxes again.

You're either in a fairly high tax bracket or dead wrong...

A lot of the things taxes pay for are like insurance, the money that the majority pay goes to help the minority of peoples whos houses burn down, etc...

As for education, its pretty well known that if the people that didn't use the education system didn't pay for it, it would fall (its stretched thin as it is). So that excuse is not valid. Neither is the argument that you don't think there should be public education. I don't think many of us are hung up there though...

To the OP, lets be honest here, there's really no way after doing the math and using common sense that you could survive without any tax-based services.

I obviously would because I use public transit, go to a state-funded school, live in a "regulated" house, use public roads, utilize state scholarship money, eat subsidized food, use federal mail, walk on government sidewalks, spend time in federal parks, work out in public recreational facilities, swim in a county pool, am protected from foreign invasions by federal and state troops, enjoy the benefits of a minimum wage, am protected from fires and criminals, commune with nature on federal land, enjoy the anti-inflationary benefits of a massive federal interstate system, don't get a heart attack every time I try a new pharmaceutical that hasn't been tested enough, eat regulated meat and drink regulated alcohol, consume food based on stringent federal definitions of "organic", pay ridiculously low gas prices, receive government-issued low-interest, long-term consumer loans (cloaked as "stimulus checks"), reap the benefits of a credit card, insurance, and mortgage industry relatively fearful of screwing me at every corner, fly on airplanes regulated for their safety, ride in cars regulated for their fuel efficiency, help protect valuable wildlife reserves and national parks, am confident that the guy across the street won't ruin my view by building an office tower, prevent the local religious majority from taking over what little there is of my city's downtown shopping space (http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=536868), aid in the cohesion of a society that would otherwise be mired in social unrest, use a court system that is fair and unbiased, reap the benefits of having most foreigners be able to speak my language due to a long term campaign of global domination by my federal government, and regularly use the fruits of a government-sponsored program (ARPANET) every time I post on totse.

Yeah, I'd say my taxes go to good use.

EDIT: Thanks for the link, Zay. :)

Have fun not driving it on public roads, then you won't have any car when some nigger steals it and shoots you. No ambulance would come and take you to the hospital you would die.

But i agree with it being nice to not pay for stupid things like giving poor crackheads money... But other things like roads we need to have and the government needs to make sure that they all get maintained vs. private companies who would only do some roads and it would get really shitty after a while.

Taxes are a horrid, corrupt, underhanded money sink that reaps just enough benefits to placate most people people. The system need not be this convoluted, biased, or inefficient.

In theory, the system is regulated by those who pay into it... but anything that grows enough collapses unto itself morally.

I would not because for a number of years I was handing over 30+% of my earnings and I feel that it really goes to the wrong hands. Schools are scratching for cash while the military dumps billions into pet projects.

I don't think I'd pay taxes if I knew my government was spending it on corrupt enterprises, illegal wars, and new ways to murder innocents en masse.

You know, like they all do now.

What do my taxes pay for?

-Defense: Aggressive, expansionist policies that attract the wrath of the entire world.

-Government: Rich old white people working to make themselves richer.

-Police: Don't give a shit.

-Fire Department: Too underfunded to make it on time.

-Schools: I don't have kids.

Roadways and infrastructure: This I actively use and would pay for.

So, overall, most of our tax dollars seem to go to things that don't directly benefit us, and often fuck us over.

Taxes are the universal way to be a full member of society.

It is not a latter of preference, it is the social system that allows to everybody to be a member of society with full range of rights.

If you pay taxes, it means that you are not an asshole, and you are able to have a job.

By paying taxes, every public service is theotretically working for you and being payed by your taxes. Theoretically this means that you are sane in mind and body.

Theoretically, if you are a law obeying cirtizen and a tax payer, you can tell police or the president to go to fuck themselves, and if they do not stop bothering you, you can assume this act as a personal persecuton act and start shooting at them.

I said theoretically, becosue in USA even if you pay taxes you still are an asshole, becosue te country is ruled by assholes who do not understand shit without god.

Anyway, if you have at least a little of brain power left, and if you see someone who is a huge asshole working at th egovernement with your money, you woul ddefinetely shoot him.

And you will be right with yourself, which is th eonly thing that matters to intelligent people.

BTW, being intelligent in USA is great, you can fuck whoever asshole you want and even kill him, if yo uare a normal law obeying and tax paying person and can prove it.

If you are too idiot to understand it, nobody normla would stop paying taxes, as it is the forst act thta allows you to have rights in a democratic society.

You look like a huge asshole for asking this idotic question. Fuck you. Go die asshole.

Even though I am a strong republican, I believe a lot of things in public domains need to exist, such as emegency services (that includes healthcare), because they are incorruptable. So, no, under the current curcamstances, I would not pay money to the federal government if I lived in the US, Unless 51% of your 1/3 personal income stop going into false wars and corrupt "government".

Hear, hear. Fucking corrupt, selfish, greedy politicians are what make taxes a bad thing.

I also think public schools are bullshit. Why would you use property taxes to base how much a school gets? The rich part of town has kickass schools, the ghetto parts have ghetto schools. If anybody in control of the system had any fucking brains in their head they'd distribute funds evenly, at least a base amount, so schools are at least partially even. Pay the teachers more, pay the administration less, and if schools go above and beyond (keeps the best attendance? I dunno but it's a start) THEN they get more $. I'm kinda considering being a teacher, but it's such a broken system I dunno if I could handle it without going apeshit and kicking some superintendent's ass :p

did whatever drugs you took just kick in halfway through your post? you started out being all logical and intelligent, then degraded into a rambling moron. Shooting people for not leaving you alone?
