View Full Version : Modifying my HAM radio?

I recently bought a UNIDEN HAM radio from EBAY, and i have been doing some research on how to do modifications on it to increase my frequency range (mostly from this site: http://www.mods.dk/). So I read that I need a 6.5536 Mhz Crystal to solder to the 100pF capacitor. So I went ahead and bought one and I located the capacitor but there's a damn 0.1 uH molded conductor sitting right on top of it! Should I take it to a specialty shop and get them to solder it? I'd prefer not to, since this particular modification is illegal where I live. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Whatever you do, don't reverse the polarity.

erm...

To start with, saying you bought a "HAM Radio" via Ebay is odd. Care to tell us what band?

Secondly, the government, at least in the United States, requires a license to use the amateur bands. I'm not going to lecture you about acquiring your license, but I will suggest you govern yourself accordingly.

Lastly, why are you wanting to open up more frequency range? If you just want to monitor (listen and log), a scanner would be a much better investment. If you want to use the radio waves properly, then I really suggest you take some time and learn a bit more about amateur radio and get your license.

Just my opinion. As always, I'm certain that your mileage will vary.

6.5536 is the crystal used for making Redboxes (http://www.phonelosers.org/redbox/), which up until about 2003, could be used to beat high pay phone prices by playing a certain tone into the phone, which would trick the computers into thinking you had plunked down your money for the call. While I doubt that placing it into your HAM unit will get you free calls anymore, it might be fun to have a 6.5536 crystal for historical sake.

Whoa, that sounds pretty neat! Are you saying I have the wrong thing for my HAM though?

HAM covers a lot of ground, man. There are several bands dedicated to amateur radio. There are also a number of multiband transceivers out there that can cover any number.

It'd be helpful if you could provide a model number.

He knew what he meant. Fact is there are allot of people that really dont know the difference between : radio, scanner receiver, transceiver, let alone dxing and the use of the spectrum.
If I had to guess he has a scanner from uniden.

Who knew what?

If it's a scanner, and he needs crystals, there's nothing saying it absolutely had to be a Uniden...

Assuming you're referring to the OP, and not just rambling after the other guys rambling about being hungry for dicks. :D
