So I just got some more perchlorate and chlorate and was wanting to do some experimentation on colored flash! I have scoured the net and found only a few mentions to varoius compositions and I think it would be good to have a little discussion of it here.

one I have just tried is 8:2 perc:zinc, the zinc has to be a fairly high mesh to perform properly otherwise its more like a quick flare.

I was thinking for an aqua flash one could use ZnCl, Perc, and Mg. I already know about the SrNO3:Mg and BaNO3:Mg.

Blue:

copper compounds + chlorine producer
copper acetoarsenite (Paris Green), Cu3As2O3Cu(C2H3O2)2 = blue
copper (I) chloride, CuCl = turquoise blue

The thing is... Very high temperatures arn't really the best for colors... and very high temperatures is exactly what you get with metal fuels. You must also consider black body radiation, IE when you heat up a chunk of metal is it going to glow one particular color? No, it will look like its glowing red, orange, or white, but that shit is emitting tons of light all over the spectrum.

IIRC some maltese specialty shells use colored flash comps... But I think they use chlorate... Which I wouldn't really condone.

Using barium or strontium nitrate with perc, a metal fuel, and some chlorinated poor fuel like PVC or fire retardant like parlon or dechlorane may be an option.

well post em if you got em... If you think some kid might get a BI then use some odd combination of nomenclature/hints that only a seasoned pyro would under stand.

i like the composition of stronium carbonate, potassium chlorate and magnesium. it was red, probobly work great with a fine mesh of magnesium, mine was a little slow but i was using 200 mesh mg, which is shit.

go to exotic flash powders II, and search for composition with SrCO3

Not only problem with colored flashes is that flash powders emit light across all the spectrum-from far IR to UV (because of black body radiating laws). Human eye is sensitive to colors only when intensity is moderate. When you pass over some limits, even monochromatic light of any color will look white. That's because all the light sensitive cells, if sensitive to colors, are color sensitive to some light intensity. When you pass that that limit ALL LIGHT will look white, all the cells will get enough light to send impulses trough optical nerve. Because of that, every intense enough light look - at least - mainly white. To get colored light you must slow down reaction a bit. Then result is really not the flash, it's more a short burning flare. Then you can see colors. Of course you need saturated color, intensified with chlorine donors etc.

I just made about 500grams of copper benzoate that im going to try to make a blue flash with.

If anything it will make a nice blue rocket!

hate to double post but 7:3 Chlorate: copper benzoate is a very effective Blue Flash.

Electric blue with a REALLY loud report.

made some copper sulfate with some H2SO4 and pennies and H2O2.

mixed that with potassium benzoate.

dried...careful its poisonous
