I'm sorry if this isn't in the right place...
Anyway...

Me and my girlfriend are thinking of moving to Amsterdam at the end of our senior year of high school(this year).

I was just wondering what do they have in the way of job marketing, the average housing prices for a 2 bed 1-1.5 bath, and how much money we should try to have accumulated before we go.

Our parents are paying for our vacation(they don't know that we're thinking of moving yet) and we'd like to have most of the things at least semi figured out before we go.

I was also wondering if we would need any particular shots or documentation to stay for an extended period of time while we wait for citizenship.

Any information or links would be appreciated.

Well, I can't give you that exact information. But I would suggest that you go on vacation or something first there...The Netherlands (the country that Amsterdam is located in, in case you didn't know :p), really isn't the fairy place Americans make it out to be. Also, if you want to live there, you'll have to learn Dutch.

Thanks for that info, that definitely stands a chance at being a deal breaker for us.

We were planning on going for vacation first, and if we decided that we liked would sell our return tickets home.

I'll be sure to relay this development to her, thanks again.

Sybil is right, young people (not just Americans) tend to really romanticize Europe, especially the Netherlands and other Western countries. Try vacationing there and in the surrounding area for a few months before actually considering moving there. Additionally, it's not like you can just fill out some forms and bam, you're a Dutch citizen... it's already a very densely populated country with tons of immigrants, you would have to wait years before getting citizenship. Plus, as you'll only have a high school diploma when you go there, you won't exactly jump to the front of the immigration line.

Basically, if your motive for moving to Amsterdam is legal and accessible intoxicants, you should really re-consider. Just go on a nice little trip through Europe next summer, and keep in mind living and working in what a lot of us North Americans tend to consider a "continental Disneyland" is quite different from just touring it.

Good luck on getting a visa without going to college to get any skills and I'm betting that if you didn't realize that you'd have to learn the native language of the Netherlands then I'd be surprised if they actually let you live there legally.

Vacation there and research my friend...

Not completely positive she isn't going to go get a Rosetta Stone for us.

Either way thanks for the info!:)

He's white, American and speaks English (a sought after language). That makes him ideal for several jobs like call centering, working with tourists, etc.

But don't expect finding a job to be easy or to get any decent income from it. But any place is better than the US right now.

If you do become a citizen, college education is very cheap in europe.

Believe me, their are ENOUGH Americans in Amsterdam. On top of that, alot of Dutch people speak English, so if they can choose between somebody who speaks somewhat near to perfect English and also Dutch, or just some American who can only speak English, their choice is easily made.
English really isn't a sought after language in Western Europe.

Sybil is completely right.

Good luck at trying to get a visa, all the EU countries have become very strict on who gets in and who doesn't. If you don't have atleast a college degree I don't give you any chance.

I've actually seen a program on tv about bums in Amsterdam which also featured an American living on the streets there. (I'm dutch btw)

Like Amsterdam being part of what was formally an economic and social union and recently became a full-fledged country, the great nation of the EU. That'd be silly, wunnit?

Pretty well actually, I don't know how said american got in the situation or if foreigners are treated different in that respect but free healthcare (I know there are a few doctors that work solely treating homeless people in Amsterdam not sure about the rest of the country), places to sleep (salvation army) and food (in every big city they have mobile soup kitchens).

It can get a bit chilly in the winter but not as bad as in the States or Canada. So, all in all it's not that bad to be a hobo here I guess. You hardly see them though, only in a few cities. (it's like they concentrate in a few cities, probably because those have the best facilities for homeless)

Rofl i remember the good old "Move to amsterdam" Fantasy as a young lad.

Then i got older and gained some realization.

I want you and your girlfriend to go get jobs and try renting an apartment. Once you see how difficult that fucking is, you will realize how difficult it must be to move to another country with a high school education when you arn't even a Resident

Ya, I showed her this thread and gave her a bunch of other info.

So basically we decided it was just a stupid high school thought, and have abandoned it.

We are getting ready to rent some appartments right by the junior college in town(we get a discount for attending).

Thanks all.

Marijuana isn't legal in Amsterdam, it's just tolerated more. I hate it when people are spouting all the shit that it's legal and all that bull. "Technically, the sale of cannabis remains an offence in Holland, and dealing in the streets remains illegal. Even so, possession of less than 30 grams for personal use carries only a minor punishment, and coffee shops are restricted to flogging no more than five grams per person. The catch is you have to be 18 or over. Smoking in public is tolerated, too, but many Brit tokers report that such a laid back attitude takes some getting used to. As a result, they prefer to remain free from all risk of coming into conflict with the law by only smoking in the coffee shop."

Info found here regarding legality of marijuana. (http://www.thesite.org/travelandfreetime/travel/beingthere/amsterdamdruglaws)

Wow, that seems so wrong...all of it...

It is Legal, but only to smoke in coffeeshops or in your own home, you CAN'T smoke it in public, the allowed quantity to have on you is 5g max and that is also the maximum that coffee shops are allowed to sell to one individual.
Dealing in the streets is indeed illegal.

Fza
2008-09-24, 19:06
Selling marijuana is legal when you own a coffeeshop, buying large quantities is illegal. You can cultivate 5 plants for personal use, anymore is illegal, you can carry with you 5 grams legally as stated previously. And smoking weed in public is illegal.

Personally I've never had a fine for smoking a joint outside, as long as you aren't an anti-social asshole in public the cops should leave you alone.

As a native Spanish speaker, Portuguese is the easiest Latin language to understand hands down. Even if the pronunciation is sometimes a little tricky, the Portuguese vocabulary, grammar, phrasing and sentence structure is so very similar to Spanish. Contrary to what many people wrongly believe, Italian is not closer to Spanish - even if the similar accent makes it seem that way. Portuguese is without a doubt the brother language of Spanish - they are almost totally compatible. Thus, educated Portuguese and Spanish speakers can converse with one another in their respective languages effortlessly.

What? It still isn't the same, it's two totaly different languages. I know in your English speaking head it probably sounds the same, which makes sense because they are both Germanic languages. Like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and alot of other languages are Romantic, so they also sound the same. But ofcourse they still arn't the same. Do you understand that?

Try holiday there for a little bit first. I nearly got in to a fist fight twice when I was there until I spoke and they realised I wasn't American. One even bought me a beer afterwards. Anyways, from my experience, far from all of them but the minority that truely hate Americans, really hate you guys.

Speaking for the minority of American totse posters that have actually been to Europe, I didn't see anyone hating me because I was American. There was a slight sterotype that I was stupid but that was barely worth mentioning. Next time someone makes a contrary statement:

Basically at this famous sex show in the red light district, a fat black woman get's up on stage and sticks a banana in her cunt. Then 5 audience members get up and take bites. The last one to take a bite, usually has to put is face in the vagina/butthole and live a life of shame.
