View Full Version : Self-Sacrifice

What do you guys think of self-sacrifice, the act of heroically give your own life for some altruistic purpose.
Although I'd say I have a heroic nature, the idea of giving my own life kind of defeats the point of living, for me. I personally don't believe in any consciousness after death, so once I'm dead, nothing that's happening on Earth is my concern. When it comes down to it, I think that my experience is the only one that ultimately matters. Even if giving my life would mean saving the entire country or the entire world, I still wouldn't do it, as once I'm dead, the outcome makes no difference to me. Like, I acknowledge that the world will (probably) go on without me, but since it isn't going to affect me in any way...I don't care about it enough that I'd end my existence for the world's benefit.
I think I'm the type of person who would put himself in danger in order to protect others and myself, but when it comes to full, certain self-sacrifice, I think in any situation I'd rather take the consequences and have a chance of seeing another day. I'd be (hypothetically and presumably) okay risking my life to stop crazy Asians on Greyhounds, or crazy Muslims on airplanes, but knowingly and willingly giving my life? I can't see that happening under any circumstance.
How about you guys? What's your philosophy on martyrdom.

Well when I die the universe ceases to exist (for me at least), therefore I will fight with all my being to see that the universe continues for another day.

I think its probly the most noble and selfless thing someone can do if its for a purpose they believe in. I'd probly give my life for my brother/mom or a few friends in a second. I don't believe in anything after death but rotting so it would have to be a very important cause close to me for me to give my life up.

I find stuff like that to be fucking badass. I would never burn myself up for a cause though. I might fight to the death for something I believe in but I have yet to find a cause that I care that much about.
I would sacrifice myself if it could save my family or something. I imagine most people would.

If I was given the choice of jumping on a grenade or letting it explode-
I'd kick it back.

I don't have enough time invested in anything that would deserve such an act. Maybe if I knew I was going to die soon and I was going to die for my kid's lives or something, I might consider it. But, at the moment, I can't think of anything significant enough.

I probably wouldn't sacrifice myself. With some things though, you can imagine you'd feel bad for not doing it the rest of your life (like if you let your family die to save yourself) so it would be better to do it.
I don't believe in life after death either, but a bad life is worse than sacrificing yourself for something worthwhile. Imagine how good the very end of your life would be, like as you ran over to jump on the grenade, you'd just be thinking how brave you were being, and the good that would come of it, and how people would remember you for it. Excellent news if it didn't go off, best of both worlds.
If I was older and near dying anyway then I'd do it probably, it would be good to go out with a bang, choosing it yourself and knowing people would remember you for it.

The only reason I would sacrifice myself would be if I was already going to die, which I doubt is going to be a realistic scenario anytime soon.
I may take suicidal risk's if I had a cause which I thaught warrented it, but killing myself for a cause is beyond me. As long as I had the blissful pocket of survival combined with the rabid conviction in the cause I would go to very great lengths, but not the whole 9 yards.

Just my subject.
I would never needlessy sacrfice myself over some cause. That said, I am prepared to go to extreme length's that might be life threatening. Like someone said "If I had the option between jumping on a grenade or letting it explode, I'd kick it back" I too would not try and run if I was sure that my friends would get hurt but quickly try to dispatch the grenade even though I might get killed in an instant.
Me as a person, I dare to say I am very reliable. Even if the situation looks hopeless and impossible to achieve I am usely the one that takes the lead and go comes through with flying colours so to speak. I know that if a dangerous situation in which my life would almost certainly be taken, I am the only one that has a chance of getting the job done and survive. There is always a chance you could survive, that's enough for me. For example if my family was threatened by muggers/ burglars, other scum and they are armed with pistols and I only have my bat or my sword (when I come from my bed room) then my chances for surviving and winning are slim. But noone else of my family knows how to fight so I would be the only one who could win, then my decision is made and I will try the best I can until my family is safe.

I'd probably sacrifice my life on a pride related issue and not much else. I'm a pretty shallow person.

well it's reasonable to not want to die, no matter how many people it might save.
I would go down swingin' and spittin' before I ever voluntarily gave my own life.

I beg to differ.
I'd say the ultimate sacrifice would be to be condemned to an [hypothetical] infinity of pain and suffering. Anything which you'd rather kill yourself to avoid.

I'd only do it if everyone good I knew of was going to die, because life'd hardly be worth living without at least some other people ..
Or if I'd die anyway ..
