View Full Version : I need to know what to say to cops
Well my area is filling with cops to fix the drug problem. So I bound to get harassed by a cop one day. If they try to search me, what do I say. I know they need a warrant or a reasonable cause, but what defines a reasonable cause. And if they ask to search w/o a cause, what do I say, just plain NO. And if u get pulled over for speeding or w/e can they search ur car? And can u get arrested for being high or do u have to have possesion. I just basically need to know how to deal w/ those pigs.

Reasonable suspicion does not have any tangible rules to follow (for the most part). It's pretty much common sense. If the police have any reason to believe you are committing a crime (car smells like weed, drugs are in plain sight, etc) then they can perform a warrantless search. Police can not, however, search your car after stopping you for minor traffic infractions (speeding, no seatbelt, running a red light).
If there is no reason for them to be suspicious, and they want to search your car, just tell them that you don't consent to any searches. Often times police will be tricky and ask questions like "Do you mind if I search your car?" The question is ambiguous because no could mean "No officer I don't mind if you search my vehicle" or "No officer I don't give you consent to search my vehicle".
Yes you can be arrested and charged with DWAI, DUI, or DWI (or any cognate charge) for being "high". Fortunately for you there is no machine that tells the police how "high" you are. You will be put through a roadside sobriety test (the same one you would be subjected to if you were drinking), and if you pass it there isn't much else that can be done.

Be respectful to the cops, but not overly compliant. Ask why youre being searched and ask to leave before being searched. If there is no way to avoid being searched simply hand everything illegal over and tell them "if you want to search me anyway, go ahead" or "I made this easy for you I hope you can do the same for me." Works for me every time, as Ive been caught with weed (personal use amounts) many times and never have I been arrested.
Waving to cops if you see them pass by helps a lot too. I was caught in a bar, very very drunk (im 19) and was let off just because I see the cop a lot while i walk to work and wave every time.

I got let off on some random infraction once because I asked him how his evening was beforehand so he decided not to be a prick about it.
