At the moment, the forum description is a little limited. This is the obvious forum in which to discuss pragmatics, syntax etc but there is no mention of applied linguistic study in the description. Linguistics extends well beyond the bounds of officially recognised languages and could provide for a lot of discussion.

Threads like this one aren't really covered by the description, but they're most definitely worth having.

A revised forum description might encourage them. Hell, you could probably even include body language if you're looking at it from an academic linguistic angle. My $0.02.

if it´s limited to you, how do you know it´s not just limited to your words?

If more of those threads pop up, we can present to the administrators a case for changing the descriptions. I think it's a good idea but right now there's just very little traffic here. Hell, in the future I wouldn't mind if there were other subforums for general discussions in other languages; i.e a spanish forum, french forum, russian forum, etc. I do think it's a good idea, though. Applied linguistics, body language, sign language, and things of the sort are all discussions I encourage. I may just make a thread on some of the things I learned on reading people's body language and facial expressions.

I'm not sure what you're asking, but where would you like to see this forum going? Do you feel it's fine as it is and should stay this way? I'm asking because I can't do this without your endorsement as well. I think a busier forum is something we would both enjoy, however.

Languages and their use. What languages do you speak and why? What do words really mean? Can you say things in one language that you can't say in another? Should there be a national language? How many languages should a person know and what are they?

pick one ..

If you have an "applied linguistics" topic, post away. The forum description is "Languages and their use". That pretty clearly implies all language-related topics, and there wasn't any problem with Hare Geist's thread...
