I have always liked the idea of joining the army reserves, and ive grown up around it as my dad still serves too. My best friend just got back from his basic training at Fort Knox and from what he tells me it sounds fun. I can deal with the drill sergeants, believe me, he told me about them too. Ive been researching alot during the last few days, and its sounding even better, I would just like some other opinions from people on here on its pros and cons. By the way im 17

Well here are the things with the Army. If you hold out they will throw money at you. Second you will get deployed. 3rd you will have the longest deployment time. Hell you might even get up to 2 year AD from one deployment.

Thanks for those little details man, nobody's mentioned that yet to me. Also though not exactly the main topic of the thread, i can swear in and join any time i want, but i cant go to basic until summer, bc of high school. I was wondering if once i swore in if i could wear my ACU's to school and shit and just wear my patrol cap, since the beret is issued in BCT

No, you can't wear any army issued shit to school. Why do you want to join the military in the first place beside someone in your family did it, and what kind of job do you want.

I want do it because i want to do something thats challenging and that gives me the chance to do something besides sit at a desk my whole life. Being a norse heathen, i have always liked the idea of that something being fighting for my country. I want to be an infantry officer

Oh boy you need to do some research. First, if you want boot to be a real challenge your looking at the wrong service :) Second, being in the Army (or any military branch) means you have a real chance of ending up behind a desk or doing something not-so-cool. Lastly, if you want to be an officer your best bet is to go to college and then go to officer candidate school or rotc something like that. Although going the enlisted path would give you experience, Army OCS really isnt that difficult that going enlisted would give you a real advantage. In addition, college opens doors and would give you a comfortable existence after the military. In short, look into the USMC :D

No you can't becasue well you don't rate it untill you finish bootcamp. But honestly if you are not ordered to do so you are a fucking faggot for doing it. Trust me people can tell I'm military at college and going to a liberal school they give me a wide birth (Probally afraid i may fuck one of them up or something). But cammies are a work uniform. Mine have blood, grease, oil and fuel stains on them. I go to those assholes at the bar and laugh in there face. Then they say there in the army and i say i'm a Marine. At which i explain to the girl he is hitting on how hard he is trying, and they usually start going for me. If you join the Marines its actually against MCO and you can be charged. Shit we can't even get out of our car to pump gas anymore ( i do it though) off base.

Don't be a pussy, join the Marine Corps.
If you want to be a weekend soldier who has a slight chance of being deployed as a half ass warrior who will probably do some menial job and not actually fight, go ahead and go to the reserves.
But, if you want to become a bloodthirsty, highly trained, badass killing machine. You join the fucking marine corps. If your gonna do something, do it right.
Plus, the army makes me sick that they wear thier fatigues off base. Thats a working uniform.

Not good for mental health, son.
If you like really long, bac kto back deployments, join the Army.
If you're looking for challenging training joing the Corps or the SEALs. Or hell, even do Rangers.
Good luck.

I don't see why people even go to ranger school. If you are going to do something like that you might as well go SF. Better pay, better bonuses, better training, shorter deployments.....
Why go JV when you can go Varsity?

Because most SF require you to be a ranger first? You don't really get to choose to be in the SF, they will usually chose you, or at least offer you the position. It's then up to you to pass a grueling course with anywhere from 20-50% pass rates.
SEALs are the only SF team I know where you don't need previous experience to try out.

That's not true. When you first join the army you can pick 18X, which is special forces recruit if you qualify. You have to be 18-25 years old I think, minimum GT score of 110, and have a highschool diploma. There might be some others, but that is just what I remember off the top of my head. Making it thru selection is a whole different story though. Depending on how motivated the individual is, most of them will wash out and stay in the army as standard 11B's.
The rangers do not accept 13B (cannon crewmembers) but they will accept 13F's (foreward observers.) SF will accept any kind of MOS I think. Usually if you go in as an 18X you go to ft benning for basic and infantry AIT, then fort bragg for airborne school and SF school.
What I like most about SF though, is after you are done with all the schooling and such, you automatically get promoted to E-5.
OP, if you are anything like me, then join the reserves or national gaurd. Active duty sucks. Actually, life in garrison sucks. I don't think it will be as bad as being deployed, but yeah, for me everyday I think fuuuuck this as I get up at 0445 for morning PT. that and constantly having someone ride your ass and bitch at you for every little wrong thing that you do.
I count off everyday as I get closer and closer to deployment. When I get back from Afghanistan, only 1 more year left....
If you sham off during work, you get labeled as a shit bag. If you room is the SLIGHTEST bit unorganized or dirty, you get labeled as a dirt bag. I am the latter ;).

Yeah, that's right, my bad. I heard they added the SFAS and SFQC as a way to wash people out who wouldn't fail otherwise (ie, not have to waste a million bucks training you for SF). It just seems like a level of bureaucracy not needed in the SF.
Do you know if AF pararescue is available to people as they join the army? Not that I can work in the US, but pararescue seems badass.
Also, good luck in Afghanistan. It's good that you're not in Iraq. The people will like you more, you'll like yourself more, you'll be doing some actual good.

Its BDU's, the ACU is what replaced it. It stood for Battle Dress Uniform. Anyone that came in after 06 likely, don't even know what BDU mean. All they know it was the older uniform.

Zanquiff sounds like he knows his shit, Also look into green to gold for the army if you want a challange and want to be an officer. Btw, go army. Not marines :). j/k, marines and army is better than all others in my eyes.
