View Full Version : Why argue?

Who the fuck cares what other douche bags you'll only ever meet online think about the possibility of an invisible man pulling strings in the sky?
I just don't see where you all get motivation to endlessly argue about points you will never fully win. Is it to gain followers to your faith? Is it to understand why people think what they think about religion? Is it to make you satisfied that people understand you correctly? Is it so you can sleep well at night knowing you outsmarted someone out there on the net? Why?

Eh, people like to argue. People argue over movies, music, politics, anything people can form an opinion about, all the time with no real expectation that the other person is ever going to change their mind.
It's for its own sake.
That and it's an amusing diversion to kill time now and again.
Well, that's my (lack of) motivation anyways. I guess some people do have serious vendettas or feel the need to 'spread the word'.

Why not?
Seems infinitely frustrating is why not.

I care, because it's interesting to keep a finger on the general mood of the internet. Some of us seem to forget that there are actual human beings generating all this text, and the pulse of ideas and the manner we express them to one another is (I think) a pretty good indicator of where we're heading as a culture.
Do you realize how lucky we are to be alive and swapping ideas?!
Is it to understand why people think what they think about religion?
Yeah, in a word.
It's only the most fascinating human phenomena I can think of, and I'm genuinely interested in trying to learn other people's points of view. Even if I disagree with it, I'm still learning something from it.
I could think of far less meaningful ways to spend my time.

I post to see what other people believe and think and to share what I think if anyone cares.
Yeah, in a word.

Your post reminded me of how explorers use to travel the world and learn from other cultures. It's almost like the internet is like a world of its own where people can explore it and learn different skills and philosophies.

Coming from a pagan boy who's been criticized for his religion for years:
I don't "argue" about religion, I discuss religion with people of different faiths. At best, I debate religion with people of different faiths. Religion is one of the oldest and most omnipresent pillars of human culture, and I find the diversity/similarities of different faiths to be fascinating.
Personally, I'm under the general belief that most religions are trying to explain the same phenomena through the best means available to the believer (even if "best means available" just means trusting one's parents or one's tribe). When I discuss/debate religion with someone, I'm either taking it as a history/culture/philosophy lesson or trying to draw lines between my own religion and somebody else's.
The only kinds of religions I actively disagree with are things like atheism and humanism, and that's just because I believe (perhaps delusionally) that I've witnessed signs that I interpret as the existence of deities and subtle energies of some sort, and the notion that those don't exist doesn't... do it for me.
Even so, when I'm debating religion, even with people of the above beliefs, I'm not trying to outsmart or convert anybody, I'm just discussing something I'm passionate about, similar to the way I'd discuss a hobby.
I only get worked up about religion with people of my own faith, and most of the people in my tribe are good-natured.

In the course of arguing, a person can learn a great number of things, that are completely unrelated to the argument itself.
For example, many people have probably learned a little something about argumental fallacy such as ad hominem, ad populum, ad nausuem, strawman etc.
Others may learn something about syllogism, and delve a bit into it's founder Aristotle.
While arguing historical facts, you may learn other things about an ancient culuture you were unaware of.
-----------
My point is this.........regardless of what you hope to accomplish, or dont care if you accomplish, one thing most everyone does accomplish is flexing the brain muscle. Exercising the mind.
If more people took as big an interest in debate as they do American Idol, I believe we would be well on our way to identifying and solving very pressing social and economic issues in the world.
That is why we should all argue.

Great point, why say anything?
My 'religion' doesn't really fit into the topics here, anything I say is normally way out in the vast infinite of Space, and not really fit for discussion, not really fit for comprehension, not really fit for being anywhere outside of my own mind.
I think I am done saying things to other people for awhile. In the meantime, I will attempt to write a book, and see if it is even possible to communicate a fraction of the uncommunicatable. It will be awhile for me to even understand enough, let alone tell another about it.
I will post bits and pieces from time to time, mainly for shits and giggles, and to see what impressions are caused.
My days of debating this nonsense are over. Endlessly arguing will not aid me in reaching the ultimate goal. It is something a man must remember on his own.

I hope you do communicate this uncommunicatable knowledge you possess to the masses who just cant grasp it.
Humanity needs you and this knowledge, you super special person you.
------
Give me a fucking break.
If you dont come here and post your nonsense, so you can have these "uncommunicatable" ideas broken down by simple logic and handed back to you in pieces, your ego will most definitely become too large and endanger us all.
Valhalla, relax, your input is valued! Just because some insensitive jerk pours scorn ... no need to retire hurt. The use of negative expletives and subtle digs at your ability suggests that they are acting out of pride rather than actually being helpful. Especially when the scorn is followed by a process that inflates the negatives! It implies their ego is just attempting to dominate you, perhaps so they can steal your power by attracting your attention and sidetracking you into a fruitless discussion, and maybe that makes them feel powerful, consciously or not? Think it seems congruent that one accusing another of acting in a way that will inflate their ego is ... a case of what's called 'reflection'?
David Hawkins(Power vs Force) had a similar experience to you, and he says he had to retire from 'normal' society. It took him 10 years to be able to express, in an intelligible way, what he was experiencing. I think you already do a fair job of that, your ideas seem to me to be just that, ideas! Those who mock you inflate your 'ideas' into an attack on reason and logic. You'd think they had never heard of "thinking outside the square".
Think this forum is a good place to test ideas for your book, try not to take the jibes of the hecklers personally:)
Is claiming to know why people do things and pinning negative things on them (i.e. "they do it to inflate their egos") not negative or scornful now?

Context, it's about context Rust;)
A bird lover heard of a most rare species in the deep jungles of Africa and decided to see if he could get a picture of it. It took him weeks to get to the small village where lived the one remaining man who actually saw this bird.
After introductions and preparations, the search party set out to find this bird. A few days later, the guide advised the party to put on their pith helmets as this is the land of the Foo bird. Questioning why, one of the guides replied that this bird is very large and dangerous.
With everyone wearing their helmets, the party cautiously entered the Foo bird’s territory. An hour later they entered an area thick with undergrowth and clearing their way through was exhausting in the humid heat.
The bird lover took off his helmet and the guide cautioned him not to. Ignoring this advice, he continued hacking his way through the undergrowth, feeling much cooler.
A bit later they heard the sound of a large bird in flight. They all peered intently trying to see this bird and took out their cameras. A few seconds later there appeared this fabulously plumed bird and were all taking pictures.
The bird lover was ecstatic and was happily recording this rare, once-in-a-lifetime event. As the bird flew over them, it discharged a large amount of excrement that landed right on the top of the bird lover’s head. The guide said: “See, I told you! the Foo shits, wear it!

Because I enjoy it. I actually laugh at people who argue for religion/against science.
It entertains me. Even though it feels like I'm playing for the Harlem Globetrotters vs. the local paraplegic midget college's amateur basketball team.

Ah yes, context!
What's the context when you reduce a human being you know nothing about to "He/she does things to inflate his/her ego"?

I read/post here, in humanities, and in politics simply to expand my base of thoughts, ideas, possible beliefs, knowledge, etc. The more ideas, whether right or wrong, you are exposed to, the better off you will be in dissecting what might be true or might be false. Furthermore, you pick up on a lot of good lines of reasoning and recognize those that are poor lines of reasoning. It's all to become a more critical and analytical thinker, so that I may apply it to all parts of my life.

This brought out far deeper motives than the forum shows at a glance, however I feel like the more level-headed, understanding users responded. While I have this groups attention, may I ask if you believe others in the forum post only to masturbate to how awesome their faith is? Would you say most of you are seeking understanding of thought processes, or would you estimate that a fair percentage of posters are close-minded nutjobs?

Honestly, I'm here to propagate an apocalyptic uprising. I'm serious. I'm a alien/human hybrid extending from royal lineage that dates back to the earliest jewish kings, and the beginning of human civilization. Amongst my family I'm considered one of the most profound prophets thats come along in a long time, parallel with Jesus, who is also part of the same royal line. I have the ability to read minds, distort time, and see into the future. Honestly, I've used this place for years now to hone my skills on manipulating the subconscious and conscious brains of the masses through speech and literature. Think of my works as a virus designed to infiltrate civilization and corrupt the brainwashing that has enslaved the masses into a soulless culture of non-thinking drones for the enrichment of the wealthy elite that drive the system. Honestly, I love this place because I'm just a crackpot here. It's the normal conditioned response you've been trained to feel towards people such as me. However, the fact that you actually read my posts affects you on levels you cannot consciously know about, much like tactics used in commercials. I'm already starting to see results of my years of infiltration and broadcasting of my thoughts throughout the net. Many topics here today, are parallels and spin-offs of earlier ideas I've put out there. I'm the good thief in the night, walking amongst you, unnoticed, ignored, seen as crazy, dismissed by the religious masses. My work here will help my alien brethren anchored between Earth and the Moon triangulate on certain brainwaves used to measure the maturity and stage of the human mind and soul. Through this they will orchestrate the rapture and save the minds that will reform society later when the system in place falls. Did you think it would happen with magic? Oh yeah, the anti-Christ is prince William. His evil started growing inside him when his mother died, and it will only perpetuate into larger things until he demands the control of the world. He's got many of the same powers as me, but he believes that control will make the world an ideal place, but instead will turn it into a living nightmare, supported by the masses 100% of the way. He's psychotic, and everyone will love him except for those that know the truth about how the world should be. Those few people will start spreading the resentment until the people rise up against the powers at be. Then I will return and defeat that asshole, cause he sucks. I honestly can't even fix shit right now, the apocalypse actually has to happen to reduce the population and bring the world within a sustainable reality.

From what I've seen, there's definitely several close-minded nutjobs (there always will be when it comes to religion), but I think the majority of the people you see "masturbating to how awesome their faith is" are really in their own way just trying to work their beliefs out on paper (or, well... close enough.) Then again, they could all be immature jerks, the above may just be my good-faith-in-humanity principle acting up again.

Your answer was quite entertaining, but I shall not be insulted. Please explain why my question is stupid, or I will be forced to type ferocious obscenities at you that could kill you from sheer fright.
