View Full Version : I want to get into Anime.
So, at school Anime kids were nerds, and had no friends. Though, I have friends, but kind of think Anime is cool.
My question is, what's the best series for a noob and the best way to get it. I know (very well :D) how to use Bittorrent.
Thanks

My posts tend to come off a little flame-baitish sometimes... Check out Samurai Champloo for sure though, it's one of my favorites.

tell us what else you are into so i don't have to suggest hello kitty.
well, anime still isn't mainstream. I can't stand dubbed anime, fan subs all the way. I suggest you start with naruto or bleach since it's an ongoing series still. After that you can branch off to things that your interested in, like romance/mech/sci-fi/etc. it's not a choice it's a life style. lol.
And check out Samurai Champloo, it's impossible not to like this anime fan or not.
Now, I used up mah bitz and downloaded the first episodes, BUT IT WAS JAPANESE! WTF. Where can I get da' English?

Don't be tempted to go for dubbed anime. It's pretty much pure ass and douchebaggery.
Subtitles ftw.

If you want it in english just search that in google. But I personally liked the japanese version with english subtitles. Mugen's voice sounds wayyy more badass in japanese, and he doesn't say as much corny shit.

Check out Akira, I say. It's got good animation, good action, a sci fi plot... and it's only like an hour and a half long so it's not much of a time commitment. Or you could just watch the first couple eps of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, or some of the other series recommended on this thread. You're just going to have to try a bunch of different things until you find someting you like.
Where to find downloads: First, check http://www.boxtorrents.com.... if they don't have what you want there, go to http://www.isohunt.com. Just use the search feature and you should be able to find 99% of completed anime series with these two sites.

Yeah, the author has really gonzo character art. You get used to it. This isn't a show you'd watch for eye-candy, but the story is epic win.

Hell yes.
Totse doesn't really watch the kinds of anime I like :(.
I like romance, comedy with a blend of seriousness.
Totse more into things like death note etc etc.
I miss watching good anime but School Rumble is great, I originally hate animes like school rumble because their so stupid..

For movies, anything by Miyazaki.

samarai x is sweetness, its an awesome blend of action, romance, and political intrigue. i personally love the romance, its a tragedy to rival romeo. this is the motion picture that coresponds with the series ruroni kenshin, which i also enjoy but its much different, lots o chibi style art, not as intense, ect.

If your looking for a more 'romantic' approach to anime (not lovey-kissy all the time, but present) try 'Eureka Seven.'
When I say romantic, I dont mean that this anime would even be placed into that genre, but it is as close as you can come, while still having all the nice aspects of an action show. IT has compelling characters and story line, that you become very engrossed in by the end.
The only problem this might present is that it is very long, over 50 episodes. But the begining and end are very different, and I highly suggest trying out the first few episodes.
Good thread, I've been wanting to get into such myself. So much that I didn't quite know where to start, though.

The anime is titled, "Kaiji - Ultimate Survivor". The original manga is called, "Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji". I prefer the original title for the series myself. I dunno why they changed it.
That being said, you should check it out. You can watch it streamed over at CR (http://www.crunchyroll.com/showseriesmedia?id=6042) or download it via. BT (http://a.scarywater.net/triad/%5BTriad%5D_Kaiji_-_01-26.torrent).

Check it out? Psh, I've watched it all already! :D
Amazing series, and surprisingly lived upto my expectations. The tension and plot was great, though my only gripe about it was the fact that it moved so dam slow at times and the narrator explained everything so much. But, I guess in hindsight that it all helped contribute to the effect of the anime. If they made it move too fast, there'd probably be no tension whatsover.
8/10 I'd say.

It was even better when it took 2 weeks for a new episode to get release. Imagine the feelings, when a new episode gets released (especially towards the end of the show, where it all kinda slows down), and hardly anything happens in it.

Yeah, that was to build up the tension and it worked out pretty well. It gets a little long at parts because they were comissioned for 26 episodes and are only covering the first part of the series. The anime only covers like 1/3 of the manga material so far.
If you liked Kaiji you might wanna check out Akagi by the same author. Lots of mahjong gambling in it so there's a bit of a learning curve (Mahjong made simple (http://guide.riichi.nl/) | Japanese terminology (http://ofb.net/~whuang/ugcs/gp/mahjong/mahjong.html)), but it's a great series. Still waiting for a season 2 on that one as well.
Akagi got me interested in mahjong. It's a pretty interesting game. There's another series in a similar vein called Legendary Gambler Tetsuya which came out years earlier that is pretty cool as well.

Haha, me too. The general rules are pretty basic, but I can't seem to understand the scoring - so I'm only thinking of it as "if the hard is more difficult to make, it probably gives more points". Oh yeah, and go into Riichi as often as I can, just for the coolness factor.
Do you understand the whole Dora indicators business? Can't seem to get that either.
Dark_Magneto
2008-10-08, 09:36
Dora are bonus tiles. Each one you have gives you 2x the point value of your hand (or what's known as a "han"). When you declare Riichi, this announces to everyone that you only need 1 more tile to win and you sacrifice 1000 points. The advantage of this is that when you do win, you get reverse dora (the tiles under the showing dora ones). The way dora indicators work is that the tile that is the next in sequence gets you the bonus. Say there's an 8-man showing for the dora indicator. That would make the 9-man the bonus tile. If it was 9-man, then the bonus tile would be 1-man. All suited tiles go 1>2>3>4>5>6>7>8>9 on the dora indicators, with the last tile in the sequence going back to the first one. The way it works with winds and dragons is like this: E>S>W>N on the winds and R>W>G on the dragon tiles.
Normally when you delcare riichi, you are not allowed to change your hand. The exception is when you declare a kan (4 of a kind). Declaring a kan adds a new dora indicator, and thus adds a new reverse dora for your hand as well if you win after declaring riichi, which is the only way to get reverse dora. The only time you want to kan is if you're pretty sure you're going to win, as you don't want to add bonus tiles for the opponents.
The 1000 point riichi deposit goes to whoever won the hand, so if you lose then your opponent gets it.
There's also "double riichi", where you declare riichi on your first turn which nets you an extra han if you win; and "1-shot" where if you win by the end of your next turn you get an extra han as well. This is why people want to be particularly careful about not dealing into a hand at least until the guy who declared riichi 's next turn passes, because if he goes out on their discard ("Ron") then not only do they have to pay the full amount since they dealt into his hand, but the extra han from the 1-shot as well.
There are many ways to get han in mahjong. Sometimes you can have a crap hand that turns into a monster hand simply by piggybacking off a truckload of dora tiles or having a hand that is worth many han in itself, like 3 or 4 sets of concealed triplets for instance (san an kou/suu an kou). Specific hands have specific han multipliers, with the harder ones netting more han.
The way the base point calculation works is based off of each kan, each set or run of 3 tiles and the 2 "head" tiles that the hand is comprised of, and whether the hand is "open" (i.e. tiles were called), or "closed" (no called tiles). The links I posted previously explain how the base point calculation works. After you figure out the base points, it's just a matter of multiplying it by 2x the han count. Calculation gets easier the higher the han value of the hand, as once you get into han of certain ranges then the hands are automatically worth a certain amount of points.
