Watch a few of these videos, they're pretty cool, anyone ever make one or know how to? They'd be pretty fun to burn the fuck out of things.

It'd be pretty amazing to have one of these IMO.
EDIT: I know there's this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgJ0EpxjZBU&feature=related
But does anyone want to break that down into stupid and say step by step as if your talking to a three year old?

That looks awesome. But fuck me if I'll be able to get a scraped dvd drive, if I do then I'll be sure to experiment.
Too bad I don't live in the states... yet.

find a computer store and have a rummage around in their dumpster at the back once in a while

That is a potent idea my friend, but only in western countries where people actually throw out loads of shit and usually leave them dumpsters unattended. Even though, I'll have to take a look at two more places, can't lose all the hope, eh? That would rock, and would add a nice thingy next to my fireballs, butane lighter flamethrowers etc.

its not just cd drives. broken playstations, dvd players and other stuff would also have a laser diode in it as well i think

Well, from what I've found out, apparently only DVD BURNER* (not players) diodes are the only ones that cause flames, CD diodes DO NOT work. No idea if blue ray do, but why the hell would you want to spend that money to find out.
But you can find some 16x DVD burners for about $20.
And if anyone does this, post pics and how they did it. (I'm only 17) So I have to convince my mom to buy me the DVD burner seeing how I don't want to spend my money. (Telling her it'd be a never ending fuel match to light the grill and fire place etc and we'd never have to buy lighters again.) -She's pretty much buying it, just have to wait for the time to order it.

I don't think it would light a gas. The reason it lights matches and fuses is because it heats up the material to the point of ignition. I'm pretty sure the heat dissipation via the air would not allow it to get to this point.

No no no, I highly doubt it would too, this is what I'm convincing my mom or trying to at least, to get me a DVD burner. I need my money for gas and I don't want a job during school, my classes are too damn hard for that.
But, if she ever saw what I'm talking about and how it'd worked she know instantly it couldn't do such things, quite a brilliant woman really, gotta pay credit where it's due.
You could use it to light a toothpick or some other solid object in the grill. Thus you have fulfilled your boast.

Heh, just so happens my DVD burner died a few weeks ago, and I had completely forgotten about this project.
I tore it apart, and it has 2 diodes, so I'm not sure which is which.
Off to google-

You could remove the IR filter from cheap green lasers. But be very careful with it. It won't seem very bright, but it will ruin your eyes just the same.
