just how artistic anime is as a media genre. most everyone i have talked to who is not into anime believes it to be on the same level as he-man and other such cartoons. i always cringe at such statements since thats completely untrue.
yet unless you watch a series yourself (certain stories being better examples than others) people probably won't get it. ):

Because 99% of the anime that makes its way to america is Shounen Jump fare. You can't tell me that Naruto or One Piece is any different from western cartoons.
Most people are never exposed to any other kinds of anime. Just like comic books/manga and video games, the west sees anime as a childish diversion and can't take it seriously.

i can tell you for a fact that one piece is entirely way different and more awesome than western cartoons, both in terms of drawing and how the story develops and is told.
i can't speak for naruto.

I completely agree with you on one level.
Yes, a lot of anime people might not take it seriously as an art form but there's a good reason...some anime's that do not make it to america are still rather, lacking in artistic-ness (this doesn't make them any less awesome) a good example would be lucky star, which is completely the best thing ever, but the art is not very complicated. At times. If you watch the series...well in some parts it gets really intense lol.

He-man and alot of those cartoons were drawn by hand for every frame. Assloads of time and effort had to go into every frame to get it right, so its pretty obvious you are going to have it looking kinda crappy, compared to today's anime.

Nerds, fat chicks, and adults living with their mothers' basement.
My point stands.

Whoa whoa whoa, I think ObZ is onto something.
Honestly though, people just disregard anime as childish because the only form of the media they know is cartoons. So, when they see bugs bunny and daffy duck killing things with anvils and breaking essential laws of physics, they just automatically assume that everything related to it is for kids. Don't get me wrong, I love old cartoons like Freakazoid and Captain Planet, it's just that they don't go over the adult content that anime does.
Interesting side story though, my father who has never watched anime in his life and disregarded it as fairly childish watched the movie Spirited Away. He was blown out of the water. He didn't know that it could be that deep, and how you could get so sucked into it. So, maybe a lot of people just aren't watching the right anime.

Anyone who says they watch anime and dont get into anime porn are FUCKING LIARS.actually there seems to be some (maybe a LOT) who don't like Hentai...shit, when I discussed 4chan with 2 of them, one of them said it was a 'horrible place' all her friends said NOT to go there...LOL. I then explained to her what 4chan does (she goes to Habbo Hotel so I mentioned the black guys with Afros saying 'Pool's closed' tellign her those are /b/tards, the people who do the Rick-Rolls and Lolcats were, etc....
Another guy said he went to 4chan and said "they're weird" (:(). He didn't liek the fact that on /b/ threads on lolion appear regularly.
I remember a /b/tard I know IRL talking about when he went to this con in indiana, a majority of people hate channers for the whole hentai thing and other stuff /b/tards do...
so yes I think there's a bunch of anime fans who hate lolicon and hentai. They're called 'Moralfag' and I believe the term predates the Scientology war.....
Seriously, I know people who read ED and they HATE Lolicon....seriously, many of them they aren't hentai addicts.....

hard to say given many of them watched Speed Racer, Space Battleship Yamato (eng version: Star Blazers) and the Macross/Robotech Saga when they were younger and the themes presented in hem........

Moralfaggotry and not being into animated porn don't go necessarily hand in hand.
I have nothing against people who like hentai/lolicon and whatnot, but it does absolutely nothing for me. Normal porn all the way.
Love anime though :).

there tends to be a corellation-those who are more of that tend to hate hentai-especially lolicon.

What you have to remember is that western cartoons and eastern anime are meant to be very similar. Not in art style, or cultural values, but in purpose. They are both programs aimed at kids/ 'young adults' (a.k.a teenagers who havent moved on yet).
Now there are great exceptions on both sides, but this proves my argument even more. Over here, in the west, we have plenty of mature cartoons, but most just never make it into animation and stay as comics (i.e. Frank Miller). But Japan has its own mature anime/manga as well. This is more culturally supported there, and hence more of it gets produced. The more that is produced, the more likely you are to have a great author.
i can tell you for a fact that one piece is entirely way different and more awesome than western cartoons, both in terms of drawing and how the story develops and is told.
People will try to defend 'shonen' anime as being much different and more mature than western cartoon, but just look at the age group they both market too. The word 'shonen' mean 'for boys' and no one can deny that there is cartoons for teenage boys here. The only real difference is the culture gap, and this does lead to some maturity issues aswell. It is merely a matter of marketing.

I'm not trying to say that. I'm saying that there age differences in both cultures, and that anime should not be regarded as superior to western cartoons. Some are, are certainly arent.

I agree people get the wrong idea because they are judging eastern culture by western standards.
Captain planet reminded me of a short lived meme in SG.

how does having an appreciation for the artistic form which is anime, make me a weeaboo? please provide some evidence that i drink sake, and walk around in kimonos and attempt to use japanese instead of english while walking around american society. otherwise, fuck off.
and having a more "exclusive" club does not make something more cool. that is a tool which you use to make yourself seem special, and outside of the mainstream which you have deemed "uncool" for whatever faggot reasons you have for deeming it so.
the entire point of this thread, which you have failed to comprehend at all, is that anime and manga is filtered into the same category as western cartoons - something only children watch. this is untrue, and a lot of people who say that they "hate anime because it's for children" and have never really given it any thought or look into to what good anime and manga actually is, might find that they would really enjoy anime or manga.
it's like if i say i hate new jersey, but have never actually been to that state at all, and only base my judgment on what others have told me.

Well see, that's where you're wrong. Your whole point about cartoons being just for kids is invalid. Now we have mainstream Western animation targeted for adults, as well as anime. But even the Western stuff has to be edited, not for kids, but to get the FCC to allow it on the air.
So your thread is pointless. Suicide is not. Try it sometime.
