View Full Version : a concise definition of God

Okay, this is a tall order, since most everyone who has ANY conception of God--even the ones that conflict--agree that God is infinite. That said, here goes:
"God is not a gendered entity who stands apart from the Universe; God IS the Universe."

I agree completely.
I believe that wise men thousands of years ago already came to this conclusion as well, but most people are muppets. Since people are just way to simple to grasp the concept of everything being of one constant energy that is the universe, they came up with the guy in the sky metaphor. Even to this day, most people still don't have a large enough abstract imagination to understand algebra, let alone the physics of the Universe that point to your definition of God being correct with almost absolute certainty. All evidence we've gathered about the physics of the universe points to an absence of God, or supports the fact that their is no outside forces manipulating anything. The universe would actually not function if such a God existed. Therefore the natural function of the universe is governed by mathematics that are constant, so God is the system of equations that govern energy's function and possibilities. So God is collective energy of the universe and the system that determines it's function, and a being God is actually impossible.

To put it as concisely as possible, I would say God is whatever you feel like it is.
Anyone can just go ahead and make up their own theories on god whenever and however they want, typically with no way to prove which is more or less accurate than the other.

's beyond the universe
if anything, I'd say God is the purest form of Mind
but really, the best definition is probably pure Being itself.

What does that even mean? Nothing, that's what it means.
"God is not a gendered entity who stands apart from the Universe; God IS the Universe."
'the divine/controlling principle is not an individual form seperate from the remainder of existence; God is the aggregate of all being'?

What the fuck is "pure being" then?

^Just a reminder--in the immortal words of Bob Dylan--"don't criticize what you can't understand."
But to try to answer your question--Being is Being. Soul stuff. Your soul is not about Doingness, but Beingness.
Does that help? No? I didn't think so, words being the language of the mind. Feelings are the language of the soul.

I'd say that definition is too reactionary.

"God is not a gendered entity who stands apart from the Universe; God IS the Universe."
How is it possible for God to simultaneously be the universe and yet stand apart from it? How can something stand apart from itself?

So what you in ignorance (I say this b/c you cannot KNOW) call God, I simply call the universe.
Allow me to define God if I may:
God: an imaginary being invented by primitive tribes people as a way of coping with fearful and uncomfortable concepts that were not understood at the time.
I like my defintion better. Just makes more sense given the history of belief in God; How God(s) used to be blamed for plague, inclement weather, and natural disasters. My defintion also explains why different cultures the world over have drastically different versions of God.

Close but no cigar. First of all, I DO know God--nothing new about this--Gnostics, and Kabbalists, and Sufi Muslims, and Hindu sages, and mystics of all stripes have been knowing God for millennia.
But look at what you said--to me, God is the same as the Universe; to you, what I call God, you call the Universe--so you have just --probably inadvertantly--agreed with me.
Your definition is identical to the first part of mine, although I avoid the generally sneering , snarky and superior tone you manage to achieve.

There is no real way for you to differentiate between what you BELIEVED to be God and your own subconscious mind, except for some empirical objective evidence.
You don't KNOW a fucking thing about God, you simply believe and hope that voice that tells you things is God and not your own inner dialogue.
---
I do love the "all religions are right" nonsense as well. Everyone gets a trophy, eh?
But look at what you said--to me, God is the same as the Universe; to you, what I call God, you call the Universe--so you have just --probably inadvertantly--agreed with me..
Allow me to clarify...what you call God, I simply recognize as being the universe. I (unlike you) do not feel the need to project anything onto this universe it simply does not appear in any observable way to have (benevolence, intelligence, etc.) no matter how comforting those projections and beliefs may make me feel.
Keep telling yourself we are in agreement though, it will be the least of your delusions.
Your definition is identical to the first part of mine,
On what fucking planet is me saying God is an imaginary creature invented by fearful primitive tribesmen, ANYTHING like what you suggest, let alone identical?
Do you just read what you want to? Is your delusion that great? Are you just a bit addled nowadays? Is it time for a nap?
although I avoid the generally sneering , snarky and superior tone you manage to achieve.
Really........everything in this quote talking about how unsneering, snarky and superior you were is sneering, snarky, and superior.
...and a personal judgement. Pratice what you preach at SOME POINT, won't you?
Do you really not see your hypocrisy, or are you just hoping the rest of us won't catch it?

"God is not a gendered entity who stands apart from the Universe; God IS the Universe."
I don't see why you feel the need to change the definition of the word god, why not just call the universe, "the universe".
And what about religions such the ancient romans, greeks, egyptians, aztecs, mayans, incans, etc., they all have multiple gods and guess what, they are all gendered entities. So by claiming a definition of a word, you managed to pretty much just say the age old saying "Your god is false".
My point is, don't bother messing with the english language, words have a meaning for a reason and you don't help when you try and change them.

That internal chatter is your mind at work.
You cannot shut it off.
I agree though, that to "know" god you do have to think less, if thats what your saying.

There is a vast difference between making observations (which I do) and passing judgement (which you seem to do).
I would love to elucidate this in detail, but I am down to five minutes of comp time.

You have gone over it in detail and the term hypocrite came up a great number of times as I recall as many, many fellow totseans called you one.
I wouldn't want to walk down that cold ass road again either. Will be harder for you to delude yourself that you do not pass judgement.

Ok sorry the "der..." was uncalled for
But your "internal chatter" shuts itself off a lot.
I can't really prove it on the web, you can do that yourself. But I can give examples.
First theres sleep, your internal chatter shuts off so your body can heal itself in sleep. Deep sleep, when you have no dreams because at the time you have no daily goals so your mind shuts down and gives your body time to heal.
Then there is also animal hibernation so they can conserve energy.
Unconsciousness also.
Then of course the way to shut down your internal chatter forever is death.

Your examples mean shit without proof.
For example: Your example about deep sleep and not dreaming......is utter horseshit. Just b/c you dont remember dreaming does not mean you failed to dream.
You have brain activity until death. This activity is internal chatter. You cannot shut it off. You cannot prove this shit so please stop.

"...God IS the Universe."
Agreed. "God" is the vital force that sustains your pathetic life. The bed you sleep on, the air you breath, the water you drink and the food you eat are all entities of a "master being" and underlining web which supports you.
Any tangible object that you can use to your advantage to sow your seeds and harvest your reward is "God" handing you something in life. "God" is not a dude up in the clouds, it's the realm we dwell in called the environment and on a macroscopic scale, the universe.
Sounds hippie, right? I can't explain any better.

My guess is the concept of a God was invented by primitive tribesfolk who had no other way of explaining very upsetting and frightening phenonmenon.
My guess is better than yours, because it answers any question about any god one could have.
No need to guess.
Going to be hard to explain why we have numerouse religions with differing concepts what God is, and more importantly what God wants from us, if you believe there is no need to guess.
Bazillions of folks be happy to tell you all about God--precious few of them AGREE, however. . . . . . .
Yes precious few of the folks who believe in a God, agree on what that entity is exactly.
Oh you meant bazillions of folks talk out of their asses about something they have no evidence for.....and few people agree with them.
That is a shame. More people should apply the same rules they do for nearly every other facet of their lives to religion.

If I were cornered to define God with loose, vague definitions such as "the air! the sky! the oxygen we breath! ALL!", then I think that the internal chatter going on inside the confines of my head would be the closest thing I could compare it to.
No one else hears or sees it. It can't be disproven. And it's the *force* that guides me along, influencing my every waking decision.
I've never been able to effectively meditate, either. My God doesn't believe in the STFU concept, apparently. Even when I'm not thinking ... I'm still thinking.
Paradox!
