View Full Version : getting rid of a wasps nest
we have a small wasps nest (european yellowjackets) up the side of the house. calling an exterminator is an option, but what would be a cheaper way of doing it myself?
thanks.

You're lucky. I wish I had a fun project like that.:(
Personally i'd go with a sparkler attached to a blowgun dart, or a flaming arrow perhaps. Followed by a PAC cannon loaded with a bunch of bb's or shot loaded inside the barrel.
maybe i should have stated before. the nest is near a window so nothing which could break it.

But seriously
http://blog.lib.umn.edu/boley011/architecture/flamethrower.jpg
I just did that myself on a smaller scale to get rid of some annoying bees that were hanging out by my garage, if you get them so that they all get fried in the blast then you run little risk of getting stung

Find a can of paint and spray it on some wood then light it, and see if it's flammable. Some are. I used to grab the can of Car touch up paint, shake the can up and spray the nest all over (you can even spray them in mid-air and since it's paint they'll just drop straight to the ground) then light it up.
We used to get paperwasps making nests in the plumtrees all the time, for some reason, even though I got them all every time.
If you can't find any spraypaint that will do that, then just make a spray can flamethrower and approach from beneath.

engine starter fluid aerosol can FTW
Or Raid. Its actually meant for killing bees.
Just spray that shit down with a water hose.
Seriously, who thinks about calling an exterminator for wasps? When I was a kid we'd attack the red wasp nests in my club house that's get up to 6" in diameter with nothing but water hoses and brooms.

so far i have removed a total of two wasps nests.
the first way was i got two sticks, detached a saint andrews cross spider web and covered the wasps nest with the web. then i just left it there for a week and they all died.
the second thing i did was shoot it with a spring powered airsoft gun. it took a few goes but it got it down eventually. personally, i would avoid the windows, but it wont do anything to glass unless it hits it at a sharp angle
another way you could try is to use a water balloon. the weight of the water would knock the wasps nest right off.

Throw some gasoline on the nests, stomp the wasps as they all fall gasping for air, and then knock the nests down.
Water has little effect on them.

Years ago we had a wasp nest in the loft, and all that was needed was a 12v computer fan, mounted on a ~30ft pole. left it for about an hour and came back to find lots of little pieces of wasp on the patio.
why not just get a can of wasp spray? they can shoot a jet of insecticide up to 30 feet and will kill the wasps on contact. why risk setting your house on fire or melting the siding when a 3 dollar can of bug spray will do the job in under a minute?

Erm...okay, here's a SERIOUS answer that won't fuck up your siding or anything.
use raid. Just spray raid on the nest, wait a bit, spray it again, then knock it down.

Yea I read an article on fark not too long ago where a guy tried burning a wasp's nest out of his garage and burned the whole garage down with his car still in it.
I've gotten rid of 3 yellow jacket nests at my house and all I used was a broom to knock it down and smash it then a hose to rinse out any little bits left. Didn't get stung even once.

Don't use Raid, that will take all the fun out of it and you will regret not being more creative when it's done. Seriously, use a leaf blower or something lol. Don't be afraid to have fun.

Airsoft guns can be fun to use against bees.
If it's right at a window, open the window and smack the nest then close the window real quick just to piss them off...you know just fo rthe fun of it.
then wait till dark when they are all in/on the nest and slowly sneak up on them with a blender cup with some water in it, smack the nest into ther cup, put lid on, put the cup on the blender, and blend.

Holy shit, winner!
I'd really like a video of this now.

It'd beat fumbling around w/ a lid.
I have a wasp nest on my front porch, I may have to try this. :D

Wasp killer sprays? If you are cheap get a spray bottle and put some gasoline in it and spray streams at them. gasoline+wasps=instant death

you can always relocate them, ie put a jar over it, break the nest into the jar, cap it (keeping them alive), bring it somewhere like a local mall or McDonalds, shake it up a little, open it, and roll it across the floor.
use a super soaker to get the nest soaked with gasoline, then light a match

Deodorant + lighter is a good idea. Otherwise get a squeezy bottle with petrol, and spray it then light.

I haven't seen a realistic answer to this post so far...
I heard that you can smear some Cyanide on the nests entrance & they will track it inside & then after a while all the wasps will die from it.
Theres probably a certain sort of Cyanide product for this, look for it.
Use a long hose (vacuum cleaner hose?) & put it over the cars exhaust pipe & pipe the gas into the nest.
Wasps are slower during the cold, so the best time to find them all in the nest is in the morning.
I poured petrol into a wasps nest that was underground to kill them, poured it in the top entrance (wasp nests have two entrances), left it untill wasps stopped appearing.
Don't use petrol/flame on a on a wasp nest on or near your house.
As someone above mentioned, it could cost you your house.
Don't underestimate wasps, I got stung from a wasp that was dead for 3 hours...

Do a volley of about 10 paintballs directly at the nest as fast as you can... this generally knocks the nest down and stuns the wasps... at which point you can just step on them... And I doubt they enjoy the propylene glycol...
This is pretty satisfying really.

Wasp and bee stingers are still viable even after the critter is dead . . . you can still be stung if not careful

I cut the head off a wasp once, it lived for 3 days.
Bastards mate was probably getting back at me for that.
Actually, thats weird,
When I find a bumblebee inside the house I talk to it,
let it calm down & then cup it between my hands & take it outside
& let it sit on my hand a bit.
Normally it will stop, sit for a second, wipe it wings etc, then turn & fly off, no drama.

dead bees and wasps can sting you if you step on them or squeeze them the right way. the muscles contract and push the stinger in, kind of like how some snakes can bite you after they're dead.

THAT makes so much sense now!
I sorta wondered why I end up with bee stings on my feet, considering the amount of time a bee sits on the ground.
Its probably just a 1/2 dead bee dieing in the grass.
When I stand on it, its stinger sticks out & I have a bee sting.
Theres been so many times I have been the only person in a group of 6 or more to get stung.
Oh, & heres a good hint, Don't do Amyl Nitrate after getting stung.
Thought I was gonna die.
