As someone who has spent some time in rez, and starting this year is an RA, I can't emphasize the point across enough. They can make or break your experience is residence. So all you first years: Don't think you can fuck around with them. Your ass could very well be evicted.

That is all

What would you consider messing around?

See, I have a problem with authority, especially if that authority is someone whom is also in school with me.

If some RA would give me any shit while I'm visiting someone in the dorms I'd probably be the most disrespectful fuck around. RA's once called the cops on me while I was at my friends dorm for having pot. The Jimmy Hendrix Tshirt and red eyes must have gave me away because nobody KNEW I had pot. Cop came and I wouldn't let him search me. My drunk ass sister threw up in the toilet and overflowed it and it was a crazy night. BUT the thing I remember most was how much of a punk the one RA was, and how much I just wanted to kick his bitch ass.

I hope you're not going to be like that, and I hope you can tell me WHY you wanted to be an RA and are you going to be a snitch RA like the guy was to me? Is there something upholding you to that standard?

Why would you be an RA basically? You're a snitch is all, not even paid for it.

My RA was an asshole. All the RA's in my dorms were assholes except one. They went out of their way to fuck my friends and I over as much as they could. I was evicted after the first semester and managed to get all my money back. In short: fuck all RA's, unless they're cool. But most of them arn't cool most of them are little bitches.

The RA's at my school are just in it for the free dorm. They don't give a shit what happens.

Open alcohol in the hallways.
Having a Party after quiet hours

Or in the case of last year, having a party that spills out into the hallway, with fights, and pulled fire alarms. Though someone ended up getting tazed which was pretty awesome to see.

Just don't piss them off, play loud music at 2 am, and other obvious shit and you'll be fine. I never even see my RA or know his name.

i think it depends what kind of school you go to. at mine, they generally don't give a shit, although this may also vary by dorm building and area of campus. obviously if you got michael jackson up all the way on your stereo at 1 am on a tuesday night for the lulz, you're gonna get a knock on the door (well..maybe) so that's expected. if you're being all loud like, haha, when you leave your drunk filled dorm room to use the bathroom and you yell back "HEY MAKE SURE THE DOORS CLOSED SO THE RA DOESNT SEE US DRINKING!" well that's just dumb.

in closing, i don't respect the RAs nor do i have any resentment toward their authority. if the vetting process wasn't so gay and hard i would be one myself and save thousands of dollars i don't have to begin with. then i'd only worry about writing up the people who are doing blatantly stupid shit out in the open, because if i don't, my hall director would fire me.

two RAs in my building last year got fired for being seen drinking in pictures on facebook. just one of the many reasons facebook should be destroyed.

I have nothing against RA's- free housing is a pretty sick deal, so I can see why some people might take it. Mine this year is pretty cool and RIGHT across the hall. Just don't be an idiot and she won't have a reason to leave her room and look for shit going on.

Obviously your post-secondary institution is, for lack of a better word, gay. Here the RAs have beer pong (though not sanctioned) tournaments in their rooms.

yes, and? these RAs were out drinking at an off campus party. someone took pictures of them, put it on their facebook, and somehow the hall director saw it. i don't know if the hall director is just a prick who browses facebook looking for his employees to be caught drinking, or if it was just by chance. nothing you said contradicts anything i said. RAs generally are not tight asses, but hall directors are performing a full time job as a position of authority in an educational setting and therefore they, like junior high principals, are generally uptight.

most RA's are assholes though and some do need to be checked, considering they take too many liberties that they get away with BECAUSE they are RA's and the freshies dont know what they cant do.

Why would you be an RA basically? You're a snitch is all, not even paid for it.

RAs are commonly the most direct liaisons between a school's student affairs administration and its student body. Tangible benefits of the RA position are generally intended as means of improving/increasing the RA's ability to identify and address the needs of their residents, as well as a way to compensate for the increased responsibility and demands on time that the RA agrees to accept by virtue of the position. These benefits vary greatly from institution to institution, and may include a single residence hall room (for assured privacy when counseling other students), parking permits, financial compensation/stipends, meal-plan, and/or significant discounts on room-rate (including full compensation). Arguably more important are the intangible benefits of the RA position, which include training in crisis management, negotiation and advocacy, advertising, time-management, ice breakers, etc. RAs are often prepared, by virtue of the demands of their position, to make successful transitions from the college environment to the job market, since they can demonstrate leadership training, management skills, and community involvement as part of their collegiate experience. ~ Wikipedia

Those sound like some decent benefits for a college student that probably doesn't have a lot of spare money.

My RAs aren't that bad. But we did get a $75 fine yesterday for having beer bottles, when you can only drink out of a glass or cup. Most of the time they're decently chill, but they can be assholes about the stupidest shit.

I was RA in college. The job both kicks and sucks ass. I did it for the free housing and it looks awesome on a resume. Setting up and running programs sucks unless you're into that kind of thing (I hated it). On the other hand, I could do pretty much whatever I wanted and never get in trouble (being a senior helps too, since you know how the system works). I got invited to all the best parties/events and got all kinds of free shit and perks. That, and I had all kinds of connections with campus staff to get pretty much whatever I wanted.

Anyway, don't be a fucking dumbass and the RA won't give a shit what you do unless they're some power-trippin' bitch with insecurities. In that case, just leave them alone or go visit them and make them feel special. RAs love that shit. Most of them got the job for just that reason (attention whores) and if you make them like you then they'll feel all kinds of guilt for ever considering getting you in trouble. If you want more info on how to exploit these types of RAs, I have lots of wisdom to share.

Also, if you wanna be a "cool guy" faggot and purposely go out of your way to cause trouble in the dorms and not give a shit about authority, by all means do whatever the hell you want... but don't fucking complain when you're pissing off half the people on your floor by being and asshole and the RA comes to write you up. That's their job, and usually the biggest reason they're getting on your case is because they want to make everyone happy. If you SHUT THE FUCK UP and keep your shenanigans to yourself and don't disturb anyone else... you can have rave parties and run a methlab out of the closet for all we care... just DON'T BE A FUCKING IDIOT AND CAUSE PROBLEMS!!!

That is all.

People who feel they should be respected solely because of their position deserve no respect.

My RA freshman year was pretty cool, we could drink in the dorms even in the hallways sometimes after the other RA's were off duty.

This year, I haven't seen my RA other than the floor meeting on the first night, which was two weeks ago.

Anyway, if your RA or the other RA's are strict, don't test them, it's stupid.

Respect gets respect. My RA had none for me or anyone on our floor. I mean shit, halfway through the year she didn't even know the name I go by, so fuck her. I'm happy to be out of the dorms.

Man, our RAs usually are there drinking with us. While on duty.

The only rule they really uphold other than "don't break shit" is no beer bottles in residence. You can have liquor in bottles, coolers in bottles, juice in bottles, but not beer. You can only drink beer out of the can or a glass.
