tell me about hems and vents

and about the different materials.

ie. wool blend, cotton blend ,cashmere, etc.

what are the modern patterns?

what are the modern colors?

i know navy is essentially gone
black and charcoal/gray remain, because they're fairly conservative

im having a suit tailored for me soon,
so im asking

The vagaries of suit fashion really tend to differ continentally.

That is, tell us what you already own and what your build and intended usage is and we'll go recommend you one instead of repeating ad nauseum what is already written in the other suit threads.

I work in the formalwear industry and should be able to answer your questions if you post any specifics.

whats a hem
and whats a vent?

i read up on it, and its something to let air out or circulate (good during warmer months).

i have a $700 dollar suit,(which if for formals, weddings)
however i want a more cheaper suit for more everyday things. (whilst still saying ' I mean buisness', or 'Im successful/fashionable',
so around $300-500.

I want another high-quality suits for special occasions also,
thus making the $700 dollar suit being a 'normal/buisness' suit.
what are the high quality/high cost suits?

I really like pinstripes. (not the ones that are spaced to far apart though)
what are the common colors in pinstripe?
Ie. silver, purple and blue

Im in australia, which is pretty much a copy of what goes on in America.

I don't like double breasted suits.

How would i go about measuring myself?

if i have a school blazer that is 42R,
is that 42" and regular?
how do they come up with that figure

How many buttons is fashionable?
I heard its two or three.
how about on the wrists? (how many buttons).

what's the top notch fabric for suits?

is it cashmere?

possible to get cashmere in pinstripes?

Alot of questions...

A hem is the sort of cuff at the bottom of your trousers, I honestly don't know too much about them.

The venting is at the back of your suit:
Italian suits tend to have no vent,
Some suits have a single vent and others have double venting - which is a british thing.

I like double but really it only serves to let the suit sit a little nicer, ask to see some examples if you like.

I don't know where suits start but I wouldn't pay less than AU$250 for one, that said, I can't tell you how much an expensive one is because they go into the thousands. I'm guessing that you're not looking to go that high though?

Pinstripes are always good, you said you were having your suit tailored so they'll have fabrics there for you to pick from. From memory the most common pinstriped colours are black, charcoal and navy. I've got a black suit with pinstripes.

Australia doesn't necessary copy America and its silly to assume so.

Not 100% on the sizing but I know with shirt sizing they'll measure around your neck - so my shirt size is a 43.

The number of buttons on your suit is usually two, three or four.

Two has been the norm for awhile and thats what my suit has, though I personally like three because thats what my high school blazer had and four is a bit rare.

Keep in mind that you NEVER do up the bottom button.

Cuffwise, I think they've got four buttons but they don't do anything unless you have doctor's cuffs, which is honestly, a bit pointless.

All good suits are made from wool and though I suppose you can get them in cashmere it would cost a bloody packet.

But like you said, you're getting it tailored so ask your tailor, they will most certainly know as they do this for a living.

thanks for your response.

Well its more of an online thing.

there's a business that tailors for you on the internet,
so it's alot cheaper.

so you basically give them your size,
they show you patterns
you upgrade the features of the fabrics you want
they give you a quote
you pay.
you wait for a month
and it comes :P.

my friend got one, and he said the measurements were pretty much right on.

so instead of getting it personally tailored,
its more cheaper to do it from this guy
and the quality of the fabrics you can upgrade for less than what the tailor would cost :P

As for the american trend thing,
i think if you look at any gloss magazine (cosmo, vague,)
all the trends are coming out of the states (which is kind of gay)

That isn't tailoring and you shouldn't delude yourself into thinking that it is.

You clearly haven't seen Vogue L'uomo.

who?
I'll get the measurements done by a tailor though. (different tailor, and send the measurements through to the company).

I'm fairly sure cashmere wool would not be very good material for a suit, especially in Australia as cashmere can get very warm.

good idea!
i don't realise how warm cashmere is.

Should I get a cheaper suit as a trial to see how good the company is,
then when i have the money get a good suit, with all the accessories?

ie. upgrade to superwool is $120, over 140s is $200
cashmere is $120 extra (im going to assume it is shit quality cashmere ie recycled)
full silk lining $30
get a waistcoat (making i a 3 peice suit)

so the basic one is a 'wool blend' 50% maxi.

so im just going to order a $300 'tailor' suit.
see how it fits, etc.
then order a nicer one with better fabrics and lining, etc.

how much would a professional tailor charge for him to measure me?

Where are you actually looking?

Make sure the suit fits your body type and that you get a tailor to fit it even better. For example: I am skinny and tall (lanky if you will) so 2 button suits look redonkulous on me. Same with pinstripe, it longates my body.

Make sure it fits square to the shoulders, chest, and slim fit through the legs.

And Navy Blue blazers are quite popular right now, especially with the gold buttons.

On the subject of sizing, the "42" bit is your chest size in inches, which is measured all the way round your chest, underneath your armpits. the "R" it is a length sizing standard, many off the peg jackets come in 3 lengths, short, regular and long.

since you are having your jacket tailored, this is largely irrelevent as it will be made to your exact measurements rather than just to the average person of that chest size.
