View Full Version : How can I make my 6 year old sister smarter?

Lobo
2008-09-09, 01:42
I dont know if this is the right place , but I couldnt find anywhere else. My 6 year old sister is a tad bit slower at things. She doesnt listen too good when you explain things , I want her to get into good habits. I dont expect her to be genius at age 6 just be do good at school or atleast up to the levels of the other kids.

Any links or advice , or things to do with her , would be greatly appreciated.

Read to her; have her read with you; less TV; more exposure to museums, art galleries, and the like. It's not really complicated, it just takes effort.

I notice she doesnt really read , she just memorizes the words. Then I ask her to read the words backwords and point at the words and shes all lost.

I'm no longer amused.

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

There is a strong correlation between a child's intelligence/learning ability and the number of stories they've heard throughout childhood and how much they've been read to. Read a few stories to her everyday and try to get her to read aloud. Afterward, talk about plot, style, etc with her if you can. Besides that, try to teach her logic/argumentation and to be rational.

Im not trolling dickwad , she actually does that.

As in , She would memorize small books that were read to her , then she just paces the words she remembers and concludes shit from pictures. She doesnt actually know how to read the word if i point it out individuality.

GTFO my thread if your calling this a troll thread , what kind of lame troll thread would this be.

Sounds like she doesn't know how to read, you should go back to the basics on how to read and get this problem fixed while shes still young. You should also get involved with her school work, keep in touch with her teacher and ask her how you can help with her studies.

or maybe she was dropped on her head or something.

There are science fiction audio books.

Personally I have found sci-fi far more mind expanding than most other fiction. They introduce a wider range of ideas and perspectives on those ideas. I just learned a new word a few days ago, "fabril". It is derived from "faber" which is Latin for blacksmith. People that create technology and program it are the fabers of our day. So fabril is about making the future.

I suppose 6 might be a bit young for SF, I started at 9, but I didn't have anyone to discuss it with.

Its too late for her, if you had any intention of "making her smarter" you should have started when she was a baby. At age 2 she should have been able to read simple words and by 5 she should have been reading chapter books. You failed.

Define "proper" grammar. Also lol @ that given my background (family, people around me, etc) I should be ghetto as fuck...or at least have a definite accent. I speak with a 'neutral' accent.

I suppose 6 might be a bit young for SF, I started at 9, but I didn't have anyone to discuss it with.I didn't start reading Star Wars books until I was 11 or so. Now I'm on the foundation books

There is a strong correlation between a child's intelligence/learning ability and the number of stories they've heard throughout childhood and how much they've been read to.

I wasn't read to a lot, I read a lot of books myself when younger though. and my mother didn't blatently discourage it thankfully and got me some books to read.

Read a few stories to her everyday and try to get her to read aloud. Afterward, talk about plot, style, etc with her if you can.

that shit sucks if it's summer and you want to play games/watch tv/etc...ANNOYING!!!!!

Besides that, try to teach her logic/argumentation and to be rational.

that is a good idea....just don't get into that "HUR HUR U R NO LOGICAL DUMBASS" crap...... :(

EDIT: OP, I forgot. RTS Games. Try to get her to play Command and Conquer and other video games! they're more valuable than you think, often people get interested enough in stories to actually look it up on wikipedia or research the history (good if it's a WW2 game or something similar )

Star Wars is NOT science fiction!!!

Time magazine, May 30, 1977 issue:

"But as Lucas and Producer Kurtz quickly point out, Star Wars is not science fiction but space fantasy. 'Space fantasy allows you more rein to say what you want to say,' explains Kurtz. 'So that's what we call it.'"

srs bsns: reading a lot is the best suggestion so far. A musical instrument is good too I think, it makes your brain good at working in a certain way, and helps with maths.

Does your family get Omega-3s as a usual part of your diet? The brain contains a lot of it & many people don't get enough, thus their brain function is not optimum. Vitamin D can't hurt either if you don't get enough sun.

Here a link to a government food guide.

Does she get enough exercise/run-around-time? Physical fitness is good for the head too.

May I add nootropics? Mild ones ofcourse, no alzheimer drug or anything like that. Omega-3 is a good suggestion, its found in fatty fish and you can but them in pill form. Also try Rhodiola rosea, link _> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodiola_Rosea. Its like 10 times more potent then GingSeng.

Put on some Vivaldi or Strauss and rape the FUCK out of her. Seriously though, try and gradually introduce her to some kid-friendly classical music (Blue Danube, Emperor's Waltz, that kind of stuff) and encourage her to read. Start off reading to her using dramatic emphasis wherever appropriate to keep her entertained, and gradually encourage her to start reading on her own (aloud to you at first, probably). See if you can find something containing Omega-3 that's designed for children. Can't imagine fish oil being harmful to a six year old. Watch Fantasia with her, too. The original, not the new one. Oh, and keep her away from junk food if you can. Water, not soda, that kind of thing. Get her to start using her imagination. Have her draw you pictures, tell you little stories, all that good stuff. Remember to be a good role-model (guess that rules out the rape). Don't let her be limited and she should do fine. Very admirable of you, sir.

While this point is inarguably valid, the OP most likely meant for her to succeed in society, not TOTSE. I was able to infer this from this (improperly formed) sentence:

What says they're mutually exclusive. You can be excessive in Society AND TOTSE. Not to mention it varies heavily on the society that you're living in. All the social unwritten BS and whatnot. That and depending on how society changes, if a lot of things are legalized or a revolution takes place (given how things go it's increasing-it'll be funny if the guys who end up capping the Federal Reserve bankers might be the niggaz from a few miles away in a militia of some sorts. To the OP:

I could barely read until I was seven and a half, almost to the point of being considered 'backwards'. Which is amusing when some who bleat on about being able to read by 5 years old, seem to have a tough time constructing simple sentences as teenagers and adults.

"But it's only Totse!" Yeah, whatever, Mr Mark-fucking-Twain.

Reading ability is not something to stress over, if anything pressurizing her is exactly what you should not be doing. That just leads to anxiety which then becomes directly associated with the act of reading, which is obviously counterproductive*. Just read with her in a relaxed manner as much as possible, make it fun, laugh, joke, clown around - bring the words to life.

Teaching a child phonetics (http://www.cambridgeenglishonline.com/Phonetics_Focus/) (I don't mean the phonetic symbols themselves) is very helpful, as it allows you to pronounce words you've never seen before purely on the basis of the phonemes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoneme) the word is made from. If you're already doing this then that's great and just stick with it.

And as for testing the ability to read backwards... who in God's name cares whether a person can read words in the wrong direction. Maybe I'm missing the point, but this sounds like one of these stupid modern-learning activities that seem to actively encourage retardation.

Stop it.

And as for SWF saying that learning "shit" off the TV is a valid form of education, well, just look at the way he's turned out... ok, maybe that's a little unfair. Well made nature and science programs can be great, but the rest of it is largely addictive and toxic mind-rot.

*I suspect this is one of the root causes of dyslexia, I certainly don't buy into it as a genuine learning disabilty.
