I haven't been here in a while and would like some discussion on the following composition which bemuses me.
I found an interesting note on wikipedia (more accurate than books :) about an incendiary composition used in making landmines in the 14th century during the Ming dynasty
''According to the Wubei Huolongjing volume of the 17th century, the formula for this slow-burning incandescent material allowed it to burn continuously for 20 to 30 days without going out. This formula included lb1f white sandal wood powder, 3 oz of iron rust (ferric oxide), 5 oz of 'white' charcoal powder (from quicklime), 2 oz of willow charcoal powder, 6 oz of dried, ground, and powdered red dates, and 3 oz of bran.''

One of the mains things that I don't get is ''charcoal powder (from quicklime)'', unless the Ming dynasty mastered alchemy and could turn CaO into carbon I doubt the claim, I mean the only oxidizing agent I see in the list is the ferric oxide and maybe the CaO(if the charcoal thing was a mistype).
I thought you guys might find it interesting.
oh and did you know that NBK isn't dead but in jail?

in jail for what?

And maybe if it was in an anaerobic environment.... you could end up with a miniature version of centralia? I think the "white" charcoal powder was baked quicklime... anyone have any experience with this sorta stuff?

They are called tires.

i know what you are talking about.
when i was on holiday in thailand, buddhist monks would burn incense in the shape of spirals. because they wrap around each other, they can be very compact, and will burn for over a month. the actual incense is probably more than 4 meters long, but its in the spiral shape that allows it to be as large as a 500mm diameter circle.

its nothing special. sandalwood is the main wood in incence, and it is accompanied by charcoal and other stuff to assist burning.

as you can tell, the actual burning site is pretty small (as the incense is thin)

Not really an incendiary, just a very slowburning fuel for atmospheric oxidation, to use a fancy term.

Now, I'm all for long burning incendiaries (anybody remember that college kid with his wooden letters?), but a month? That's beyond me.

Yes I remember that guy! he needed logs to burn for some beach party/ fraternity thing right? in the end did he soak the logs in linseed oil or KNO3, I can't remember.
According to the composition described by wikipedia on early land mines it could indeed burn for a month.

I don't understand why there was mention of tires as they aren't compositions and would give off large amounts of black sooty smoke (hardly inconspicuous) .

I suppose you could use a tungsten or manganese + lead chromate timing composition like in typical grenades but I am just curious if the composition described would work.

Tires were an example of things that will burn for a month.

Also, if he soaked the logs in kno3 they would have burned in minutes, not days... Sorta makes me want to try this though.

Um, tires are a composition. Unless it is a single pure compound or element, it is a composition of things.

It was a joke anyway though, get a sense of humor.

He is a suspect in a murder investigation:

check roguesci.org if you want more info.

As for the tires, yes they are a chemical composition, I was just trying to keep the thread on the ancient incendiary topic.

Thanks mantikore.

I would have thought he was smarter than that, using a victims identity and ATM card what the fuck.

Yeah that's basically the focus of discussion over on roguesci, hardly any of the regulars believe he is stupid enough to shoot his landlord then leave his body in a creek then steal his credit card and then use it in Canada.
I personally believe he was set up somehow...but I am a bit suspicious as he is also a racist/ white supremacist. You should read his letter to roguesci, it is chock full of anti black quotes and he even details how he wouldn't share a cell with a black person and thus had to spend time in isolation because of it (Canadian prison).
There was an effort on behalf of megalomania, just after the murder, to convince the forum members that NBK was dead due to a half condition, seemingly to help him escape the US.

Ah we're off topic! :)

I would not doubt he'd do it. He was pretty much psychotic. In my short 2 years at roguesci many years back I had read lots of stuff form him and many of his old files and stuff from the ftp server way back in the day and pretty much everything had inserted something about killing cops or his hatred of blacks/gays and the most extremist survivalist & anti-government mantra I have ever heard.

There was even photoshop pics he had for one of his old files of a marksman with an "NBK" vest on shooting a SWAT member, and another with a pictogram of him shooting a person in the head for stealing from him. He also mentioned some technique about killing a cop & his buddy if he was pulled over compete with diagram (i think it was in MSpaint & legoCAD). Also his constant rants about everything in general, and I think there was a one about even paying rent (hatred towards lanlord?).

Seems like the older I get and more I remember the stuff it really makes me realize how crazy he was.

Anyways this talk about slow burning stuff reminds me about that 40 year old coal mine fire that is slowly collapsing a town (or former now) in the US, but i cant remember the name.

Frankly I'm not surprised at all that he did something like this. Hell, from the way he talked I had figured he already HAD done this kind of thing.

His helicopter takedown device was the fucking shit. Much lulz.

Perhaps you could go to some religious buildings and ask them about their knowledge of incense.

OK, ENOUGH ABOUT THE NBK BULLSHIT!

If you haven't heard of him then you don't need to know.

I personally always respected and liked him until I read his letter/hate speech from prison, I thought he was pretty intelligent but I never noticed or read any of his stuff on killing landlords or being a psychopathic supremacist. Though I'm woefully incompetent at judging a persons character, you'd be surprised, as I was, how my Irish peers seem to despise foreigners, they seem to forget Irish Catholics were treated similarly...amadáin!

You do realize that styrofoam dissolves in prettmuch every substance that is both flammable + volatile, right?
