First off, I just want to say that I put this here because learning to speak German is my goal. If a mod thinks this would be better in ...RnR then I don't mind it being moved.

I am taking German in college, and I was wondering if there are any good German bands that might help me learn, even if it's just to get me used to the sound of the language/whatever. I don't think singing along to english songs is very helpful while studying. I like bands like sublime, pepper, and SOJA. Reggae/alternative.

No way. Music is a great way to learn language. So long as this doesn't turn into a discussion of lacrimosa vs rammstein it fits.

I used to be a really big rammstein fan. They have very simple lyrics that are well enunciated. Unfortunately, rammstein carries a bad stigma nowadays - not as many fans today as their used to be.

BSK posted a link to Die Ärzte - another one of my favorite bands. They are also a great band for someone learning german. Though they typically sing faster, they enunciate well so it's easy to understand.

Wir Sind Helden is also one of my favorites. She uses an interesting vocabulary - lots of words that you probably wouldn't learn in a class. It's also a bit harder to understand what she's singing because she emphasizes her syllables according to the beat of the music - not how the word should be pronounced... if that makes sense. However, I absolutely love the music and lyrics (once I understood them).

Seeed is good but I don't like much of their later stuff. They need to stick to upbeat reggae - less hip-hop.

Sportfreunde Stiller (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sportfreunde+stiller&search_type=&aq=0&oq=sportfre) was a band I heard an awful lot of while in germany. They've got a good sound and did an awesome cover of Friday I'm in Love (The Cure).

Oh and let me just say your government is sad, not allowing freedom of information is a form of censorship. But then again, they had good teachers of that.

Reggae/alternative.

1) You can learn excellent German from propaganda songs because they were meant to be understood by a broad audience.

2) I think this is pretty alternative

Don't act so butthurt BSK, propaganda music has it's own charm. You don't have to agree with the ideas to listen to the music.

*listens Red Army Choir*

We're forgetting the ultimate propaganda song ofcourse; Horst Wessel Lied (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS-pJhnEdSA)

If you like punkrock, check out Wilde 13. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDXtYMwAv-E)

The OP can decide for himself what he wants to hear. He is merely making a suggestion.

this is a forum about languages and not about biased politics. any posts to spread links that are not here because of a motivation to learn languages will be moved to an appropriate forum or to trash. post the links again and you will be infracted. period.

I agree. Such links do not belong in this forum. They don't do a good job of teaching the language without a bias. In fact, using most of the phrases in those songs would get you beaten up in Germany. Not a good learning resource.

In a discussion about Germany history this would be perfect material. But since this is a thread about a beginner trying to German through popular music... I just don't see how it fits.

Not to mention, it's a bit distasteful...

The song is subtitled in english.

Which makes it more suitable to learn german with than anything else posted here.

No one is trying to spread biased politics, it's just old propaganda songs. I love listening to the Red Army Choir, and they sing about communism. Which has killed a shitload more people then the nazi's did. (not that makes the nazi's any less terrible)

Still, it doesn't make me a communist.

Just leave it be Fza. People with lots of power on this forum but with little sense of,

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

are censoring our posts. I have a German name for them, its Antifa.

As a German, I was going to recommend four bands. Arzte, Sportfreunde Stiller, Die Toten Hosen, and Farin Urlaub.

If you like rap more, there are many, many choices. Sido, B-tight, Tony D, Bushido, GBZ, Massiv, Die Fantastischen Vier, Seeed, Azad, K.I.Z. (a bit extreme, though), Tomekk, etc. There are dozens.

What's that? You can't get health care? Too bad, that's one of the perks of living in a slightly socialist country. At least we know we lack certain rights. I'm not going to turn this into a debate thread, but I just felt I needed to reply.

Kraftwerk and Wolfsheim. Both excellent groups who tend to mix English and German in their songs. Kraftwerk has alternate versions of some of their songs for either language and also translate back and forth in some of their songs.
