Yes, a good chunk of the languages are the same, but the majority is different. (volcabulary wise)

Is there much difference between Ukrainian and Russian?
I understand Russian perfectly, but I can't listen to Ukrainians without translation. I mean, I pick up some words, but I lose the meaning.

According to the chart, ukranian is the closest langauge to russian. That doesn't necessarily mean they are mutually intelligible, as accents and usage between even dialects of different languages pose a challenge to the untrained ear. Someone from rural england will have a hard time being understood by americans because we are not exposed to their dialect.

On a side note, I hope Timoshenko runs for president and wins, she's hot.

lol. My Ukrainian teacher just moved from ukraine a few months ago to teach at my university. Someone brought up the elections there, and, well, lets just say she got opinions.
Apparently Timoshenko is just a puppet of putin, they had some weird deals in which timoshenko got millions of monies from russia. Also the ukrainian voting machines are owned by a russian company. All part of a giant conspiracy to prevent ukraine from getting into the EU and for russia to gain de facto control over ukraine.

Well, Russia-backed Yanukovich did fail to get to power a while back. I have to say I have high hopes for Ukraine, they seem to be determined. The Russian people seem to have given up trying to take part in their politics, mostly.
Also note how your University teacher is female. Most males wouldn't care if she was backed by Satan himself. :D

They're different languages (or dialects), not just different accents.

Ukranian has a bunch of identical/similar words/meanings but it is wholly different enough that unless you're especially proficient at Russian or a native (I win) you will not get much. If you are very fluent in russian you should be able to get the 'gist of what pretty much anybody is saying, though probably not the finer points. If you wish to go to ukraine, it will be very easy for people to understand you (in Russian, also a lot of people there speak it) while relatively tough for you to understand them.
Also note that when I was a wee lad it only took me barely a months' immersion in Ukraine to transfer from Russian -> Bilingual. Although I ruled at language(s) as a kid, that still pretty much shows that there is not THAT much difference

My ex is Ukrainian and her family speak Russian. Ukrainian for her was like a different language that she had to think about even though she was fluent in Russian.
I am less than an amateur in Russian and Ukrainian but I noticed some subtle differences in spellings and stuff when I was in Kiev a couple years ago.
One thing does stay the same though...Fucking. Hot. Women.

I bet you're one of them people that think Putin is a blessing to Russia, and quickly forgot about Kursk, "terrorist acts" in Moscow and Volgodonsk, Nord-Ost and Beslan.
Ukraine and other ex-Soviet republics wouldn't be running away from Russia if Russia's government wasn't acting like such a shitty neighbour.
How many allies does Russia have in the world? Exactly.
At least back in the Yeltsin times we were ashamed of our idiocy, now we are proud of it.
Putin is a blessing to Russia.
Ukraine and other ex-Soviet republics are lucky to still exist today not to mention how much worse off they are now than when in the CCCP.
Russian's ally is China
Yeltsin was a fat tub of lard that finally rolled over and died
"now we are proud of it"
i take it you are russian too....you are a disgrace to your country

Putin is a blessing to Russia.
Ok. Let's see what Putin managed to achieve during the time he's been in power.
a). Immunity to Yeltsin and "the family".
b). Potentially involved in the "terrorist attacks" of 1999 in Moscow and Volgodonsk (look what happened to anyone that tried to look into it - and the reaction of the officials to what happened in Ryazan).
c). Let the Kursk crew suffocate to death, starting the rescue efforts only after they were dead, while having his officials telling lies to the public. Nobody got punished.
d). "Rescue operation" in Nord-Ost killed half the hostages. Nobody got punished.
e). Firing at the kids in the Beslan school. Now all we get is the Beslan Mothers being harrassed. Nobody got punished.
f). No independent federal channels were left.
g). The last 2 federal elections were the most fucked up in the history of modern Russia. Made the 1996 elections look good.
h). While Russia was blessed with incredible oil prices, NONE of the important reforms were carried out. Our army is still screwed up, along with our healthcare, and infrastructure.
i). Made the Russian market crash more than it should have with his bullshit actions in Georgia and statements about "Mechel". NOTE how our armed forces moved into Georgia WITHOUT even the formal consent of the parliament, which is against the constitution.
j). Ex-UKOS workers. I won't even go into that. Bakhmina has 2 small kids, the victim of her alleged crimes stated that they have no issues with her, she has all the conditions fulfilled for getting released prematurely, yet she's still in prison. NONE of the witnesses testified against Khodorkovsky.
k). All the political opposition has been forced to go "underground" - with total control from the media, refusal to register the candidates and other forms of pressure.
l). Federalism has been de-facto abolished, with the governers now being appointed from Moscow. As a result, they don't even try to be liked by their people, only by Moscow. Look at Ingushetia, it's fucking boiling down there. With the precedents of Abkhasia, South Ossetia and Kosovo I won't be surprised if they get radicalised and Russia just falls apart.
m). Corruption in Russia under Putin has gone through the roof. 20% GDP, claimed by some. Monopolism in the economy cause the hikes in prices - including the petrol prices remaining high even though oil prices are falling.
n). He basically gave away two of our islands to China. Well done. My people died to defend those islands 50 years ago. And he didn't even hold a referendum. In fact, during his rule not once did he hold a nationwide referendum.
Is that enough for you or do you want me to go on?
Ukraine and other ex-Soviet republics are lucky to still exist today not to mention how much worse off they are now than when in the CCCP.
It's their business. If they're feeling so bad without Russia, they would've hanged on to CIS and tried to re-integrate, don't you think? Maybe something's a bit off in Russia's foreign policy, huh?
Russian's ally is China
Now that's really cracking me up. China can't wait to acquire underpopulated Siberia with it's resources, and they have the power and the people to do so. China should be our main concern right now. Knowing all that, he gave away 2 of our islands to them. Without asking the people. Well-fucking-done.
Oh, and did China support Russia in South Ossetia and Abkhasia? Did it accept their independence? Not much of an ally then, is it?
Yeltsin was a fat tub of lard that finally rolled over and died
At least under Yeltsin we could say that on federal television, in prime time. Good luck criticising Putin on the telly.
Not mentioning that you are being very argumentative there.
"now we are proud of it"
i take it you are russian too....you are a disgrace to your country
Well, let's see your arguments. From what I've read of you so far, you don't seem to really care about your country.
I mean, the most basic rights of the people of your country have been raped, and you seem to be pretty chill about it. Well, good luck to you.

The Northern Resource Area That ring any bells?
What the fuck, even in the darkest hours of the Politburo rule did the Party think of China as allies. Those two islands were feeding the dogs scraps so they wouldn't come after a bigger meal.

I was addressing Zay's analogy to English spoken in some rural area versus American English. Ukrainian and Russian different languages, not just different accents, like I said.
Why are there so many retards posting lately?

They're definitely different languages; but the difference isn't that big. Most folks in Kiev speak Russian, and whenever I've spoken Russian, Ukrainian speaking folks have understood me.
When I lived in Kiev for a year, and I was still a young kid good with languages, within a couple of months I spoke decent Ukrainian (Russian's my first language)

They are two different languages that can be understood by speakers on either side. I, being a Russian native speaker, can understand most Ukrainian being spoken.

Exaggeration, I suppose. I meant the language as it is written, I can usually find the meaning.
