perhaps during the winter solstice of 2012 people will be so anxious that when nothing happens the world will erupt into a global riot in fulfillment of the prophesies?

Maybe the LHC will create a few stable mini black holes, but they won't actually begin to do affect anything until 2012, in which case, we will all be fucked. First the Earth would implode, then the immense gravity will suck in the surrounding planets, and eventually the sun.
